A different parameter extraction approach based on zero immittances for composite right/left-handed (CRLH) structure is presented. For lossless unit cell equivalent circuit model, LC parameters of series and parallel branches are extracted according to series resonance frequency and parallel resonance frequency, respectively. This approach can be applied to symmetric and unbalanced CRLH structures. The parameter extraction procedure is provided and validated by T-type unit cell model. The responses of distributed prototype and extracted equivalent LC circuit model are in good agreement. The equivalent circuit modeling can improve the degree of freedom in the CRLH TLs design. This parameter extraction method provides an effective and straightforward way in CRLH metamaterials design and applications in telecommunication systems.

One major difficulty of parameter extraction for an equivalent circuit lies in applying an optimization algorithm to efficiently approach the global minimum. Traditional genetic algorithm (GA) is able to find the global minimum but it has very low convergence rate. On the other hand, direct search method may be easily trapped in local minima. In this work, an improved parameter extraction method which is capable of effectively performing the global minimum search is proposed. This method combines GA and Powell’s method to efficiently determine circuit elements of an equivalent circuit model. A spiral inductor and an interdigital capacitor are used as design examples to illustrate the extraction procedure and validate the proposed hybrid method.

This article presents an up-to-date review of several methods used for extraction of diode and solar cell model parameters. In order to facilitate the choice of the most appropriate method for the given particular application, the methods are classified according to their lumped parameter equivalent circuit model: single-exponential, double-exponential, multiple-exponential, with and without series and parallel resistances. In general, methods based on numerical integration or optimization are recommended to reduce the possible uncertainties arising from measurement noise.
