In recent years, heterogeneous radio access technologies have experienced rapid development and gradually achieved effective coordination and integration, resulting in heterogeneous networks (HetNets). In this paper, we consider the downlink secure transmission of HetNets where the information transmission from base stations (BSs) to legitimate users is subject to the interception of eavesdroppers. In particular, we stress the problem of joint user association and power allocation of the BSs. To achieve data transmission in a secure and energy efficient manner, we introduce the concept of secrecy energy efficiency which is defined as the ratio of the secrecy transmission rate and power consumption of the BSs and formulate the problem of joint user association and power allocation as an optimization problem which maximizes the joint secrecy energy efficiency of all the BSs under the power constraint of the BSs and the minimum data rate constraint of user equipment (UE). By equivalently transforming the optimization problem into two subproblems, that is, power allocation subproblem and user association subproblem of the BSs, and applying iterative method and Kuhn-Munkres (K-M) algorithm to solve the two subproblems, respectively, the optimal user association and power allocation strategies can be obtained. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm outperforms previously proposed algorithms.

In this paper, we investigate the energy efficiency (EE) maximization in multi-cell multi-carrier non-orthogonal multiple access (MCMC-NOMA) networks. To achieve this goal, an optimization problem is formulated then the solution is divided into two parts. First, we investigate the inter-cell interference mitigation and then we propose an auction-based non-cooperative game for power allocation for base stations. Finally, to guarantee the rate requirements for users, power is allocated fairly to users. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme has the best performance compared with the existing NOMA-based fractional transmit power allocation (FTPA) and the conventional orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA).

We firstly formulate the energy efficiency (EE) maximization problem of joint user association and power allocation considering minimum data rate requirement of small cell users (SUEs) and maximum transmit power constraint of small cell base stations (SBSs), which is NP-hard. Then, we propose a dynamic coordinated multipoint joint transmission (CoMP-JT) algorithm to improve EE. In the first phase, SUEs are associated with the SBSs close to them to reduce the loss of power by the proposed user association algorithm, where the associated SBSs of each small cell user (SUE) form a dynamic CoMP-JT set. In the second phase, through the methods of fractional programming and successive convex approximation, we transform the EE maximization subproblem of power allocation for SBSs into a convex problem that can be solved by proposed power allocation optimization algorithm. Moreover, we show that the proposed solution has a much lower computational complexity than that of the optimal solution obtained by exhaustive search. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed solution has a better performance.

This paper studies the problem of joint power allocation and user association in wireless heterogeneous networks (HetNets) with a deep reinforcement learning (DRL)-based approach. This is a challenging problem since the action space is hybrid, consisting of continuous actions (power allocation) and discrete actions (device association). Instead of quantizing the continuous space (i.e., possible values of powers) into a set of discrete alternatives and applying traditional deep reinforcement approaches such as deep Q learning, we propose working on the hybrid space directly by using the novel parameterized deep Q-network (P-DQN) to update the learning policy and maximize the average cumulative reward. Furthermore, we incorporate the constraints of limited wireless backhaul capacity and the quality-of-service (QoS) of each user equipment (UE) into the learning process. Simulation results show that the proposed P-DQN outperforms the traditional approaches, such as the DQN and distance-based association, in terms of energy efficiency while satisfying the QoS and backhaul capacity constraints. The improvement in the energy efficiency of the proposed P-DQN on average may reach 77.6% and 140.6% over the traditional DQN and distance-based association approaches, respectively, in a HetNet with three SBS and five UEs.

This thesis focuses on resource management both in communication and computing sides of the cloud radio access networks (C-RANs). Communication and computing resources are bandwidth, power, baseband unit servers, and virtual machines, which become major resource allocation elements of C-RANs. If they are not properly handled, they create congestion and overload problems in radio access network and core network part of the backbone cellular network. We study two general problems of C-RAN networks, referred to as communication and computing resource allocation problem along with user association, base band unit (BBU) and remote radio heads (RRH) mapping problems in order to improve energy efficiency, sum data rate and to minimize delay performance of C-RAN networks. In this thesis, we propose, implement, and evaluate several solution strategies, namely posterior probability based user association and power allocation method, double-sided auction based distributed resource allocation method, the energy efficient joint workload scheduling and BBU allocation and iterative resource allocation method to deal with the resource management problems in both orthogonal and non-orthogonal multiple access supported C-RAN networks. In the posterior probability based user association and power allocation method, we apply Bayes theory to solve the multi-cell association problem in the coordinated multi-point supported C-RANs. We also use queueing and auction theory to solve the joint communication and computing resource optimization problem. As the joint optimization problem, we investigate the delay and sum data rate performance of C-RANs. To improve the energy efficiency of C-RANs, we employ Dinkelbach theorem and propose an iterative resource allocation method. Our proposed methods are evaluated via simulations by considering the effect of bandwidth utilization percentage, different scheduling weight, signal-to-interference ratio threshold value and number of users. The results show that the proposed methods can be successfully implemented for 5G C-RANs. Among the various non-orthogonal multiple access schemes, we consider and implement the sparse code multiple access (SCMA) scheme to jointly optimize the codebook and power allocation in the downlink of the C-RANs, where the utilization of sparse code multiple access in C-RANs to improve energy efficiency has not been investigated in detail in the literature. To solve the NP-hard joint optimization problem, we decompose the original problem into two subproblems: codebook allocation and power allocation. Using the graph theory, we propose the throughput aware sparse code multiple access based codebook selection method, which generates a stable codebook allocation solution within a finite number of steps. For the power allocation solution, we propose the iterative level-based power allocation method, which incorporates different power allocation approaches (e.g., weighted and successive interference cancellation ) into different levels to satisfy the maximum power requirement. Simulation results show that the sum data rate and energy efficiency performance of non-orthogonal multiple access supported C-RANs significantly increases with the number of users when the successive interference cancellation aware geometric water-filling based power allocation is used.

Abstract A robust power allocation is proposed for downlink non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) heterogeneous networks with EH (Energy harvesting) under imperfect channel state information (CSI). In order to achieve green communication, an EH-aided scheme by leveraging energy from macro base station (MBS) signal and interference signal transmitted from other SBSs is proposed, which reduces the power burden and energy consumption of the SBS. In order to conform to the actual communication scenario, we construct an energy efficiency optimization function under imperfect CSI with considering the constraint of the outage probability interference power in macro cell user (MCU). However, the formulated optimization problem is non-convex due to the fractional form of the objective function and the probabilistic constraints of the outage probability limit. To cope with this problem, we propose a robust power allocation scheme. Firstly, the probabilistic problem is converted into a robust non-probabilistic problem by the minimax probability machine (MPM) and robust optimization theory. Then, the robust non-probabilistic problem can be transformed into the convex optimization problem via Dinkelbach method and sequential convex programming. Finally, the optimal transmission powers of the small cell users (SCUs) are obtained by Lagrange dual approach. The simulation results show that the robust power allocation scheme for NOMA heterogeneous networks with EH under imperfect CSI can significantly improve energy efficiency compared with traditional power allocation algorithms.

To support a vast number of devices with less energy consumption, we propose a new user association and power control scheme for machine to machine enabled heterogeneous networks with non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA), where a mobile user (MU) acting as a machine-type communication gateway can decode and forward both the information of machine-type communication devices and its own data to the base station (BS) directly. MU association and power control are jointly considered in the formulated as optimization problem for energy efficiency (EE) maximization under the constraints of minimum data rate requirements of MUs. A many-to-one MU association matching algorithm is firstly proposed based on the theory of matching game. By taking swap matching operations among MUs, BSs, and sub-channels, the original problem can be solved by dealing with the EE maximization for each sub-channel. Then, two power control algorithms are proposed, where the tools of sequential optimization, fractional programming, and exhaustive search have been employed. Simulation results are provided to demonstrate the optimality properties of our algorithms under different parameter settings.

Fifth-generation (5G) wireless networks and beyond will be heterogeneous in nature, with a mixture of macro and micro radio cells. In this scenario where high power macro base stations (MBS) coexist with low power micro base stations (mBS), it is challenging to ensure optimal usage of radio resources to serve users with a multitude of quality of service (QoS) requirements. Typical signal to interference and noise ratio (SINR)-based user allocation protocols unfairly assign more users to the high power MBS, starving mBS. There have been many attempts in the literature to forcefully assign users to mBS with limited success. In this paper, we take a different approach using second order statistics of user data, which is a better indicator of traffic fluctuations. We propose a new algorithm for user association to the appropriate base station (BS) by utilizing the standard deviation of the overall network load. This is done through an exhaustive search of the best user equipment (UE)–BS combinations that provide a global minimum to the standard deviation. This would correspond to the optimum number of UEs assigned to every BS, either macro or micro. We have also derived new expressions for coverage probability and network energy efficiency for analytical performance evaluation. Simulation results prove the validity of our proposed methods to balance the network load, improve data rate, average energy efficiency, and coverage probability with superior performance compared with other algorithms.
