Phase transition of RN-AdS black hole is investigated from a new perspective. Not only is the cosmological constant treated as pressure but also the spatial curvature of black hole is treated as topological charge ϵ. We obtain the extended thermodynamic first law from which the mass is naturally viewed as enthalpy rather than internal energy. In canonical ensemble with fixed topological charge and electric charge Q, interesting van der Waals like oscillatory behavior in T-S and P-V graphs and swallow tail behavior in G-T and G-P graphs is observed. By applying the Maxwell equal area law and analysing the Gibbs free energy, we obtain analytical phase transition coexistence curves which are consistent with each other. The phase diagram is four dimensional with T,P,Q,ϵ.

The topological charge ϵ of AdS black hole is introduced by Tian et al. in their papers, where a complete thermodynamic first law is obtained. In this paper, we investigate a new phase transition related to the topological charge in Einstein-Maxwell theory. Firstly, we derive the explicit solutions corresponding to the divergence of specific heat Cϵ and determine the phase transition critical point. Secondly, the T-r curve and T-S curve are investigated and they exhibit an interesting van der Waals system’s behavior. Critical physical quantities are also obtained which are consistent with those derived from the specific heat analysis. Thirdly, a van der Waals system’s swallow tail behavior is observed when ϵ>ϵc in the F-T graph. What is more, the analytic phase transition coexistence lines are obtained by using the Maxwell equal area law and free energy analysis, the results of which are consistent with each other.

After introducing the connection between the black hole horizon and the cosmological horizon, we discuss the thermodynamic properties of Reissner–Nordström–de Sitter (RN–dS) space–time. We present the condition under which RN–dS black hole can exist. Employing Ehrenfest' classification, we conclude that the phase transition of RN–dS black hole is the second-order one. The position of the phase transition point is irrelevant to the electric charge of the system. It only depends on the ratio of the black hole horizon and the cosmological horizon.

In this paper, we further investigate the phase transitions of Born–Infeld AdS black holes in canonical ensemble. We take a different approach to investigate in detail the impact of the choice of parameters. Some interesting phase transition phenomena which has been ignored before are discovered. To examine the phase structure we find, we carry out the standard analysis of the behavior of free energy. We also apply the framework of geometrothermodynamics into Born–Infeld AdS black holes. It is shown that the Legendre invariant thermodynamic scalar curvature diverges exactly where the specific heat at constant charge diverges, which confirms the correctness of the phase structure we find. It is worth noting that although the phase structure shares similarity with RN-AdS black hole, it also has its unique characteristics due to influence of Born–Infeld electrodynamics.

AbstractIn this paper, we study spontaneous scalarization of asymptotically anti-de Sitter charged black holes in an Einstein–Maxwell-scalar model with a non-minimal coupling between the scalar and Maxwell fields. In this model, Reissner–Nordström-AdS (RNAdS) black holes are scalar-free black hole solutions, and may induce scalarized black holes due to the presence of a tachyonic instability of the scalar field near the event horizon. For RNAdS and scalarized black hole solutions, we investigate the domain of existence, perturbative stability against spherical perturbations and phase structure. In a micro-canonical ensemble, scalarized solutions are always thermodynamically preferred over RNAdS black holes. However, the system has much richer phase structure and phase transitions in a canonical ensemble. In particular, we report a RNAdS BH/scalarized BH/RNAdS BH reentrant phase transition, which is composed of a zeroth-order phase transition and a second-order one.

We generalize the holographic superconductor model with dark matter sector by including the Stückelberg mechanism in the four-dimensional anti-de Sitter (AdS) black hole background away from the probe limit. We study effects of the dark matter sector on the [Formula: see text]-wave scalar condensation and find that the dark matter sector affects the critical phase transition temperature and also the order of phase transitions. At last, we conclude that the dark matter sector brings richer physics in this general metal/superconductor system.

We investigate thermodynamics of the BTZ black hole in new massive gravity explicitly. Form2l2>1/2withm2being the mass parameter of fourth-order terms andl2AdS3curvature radius, the Hawking-Page phase transition occurs between the BTZ black hole and AdS (thermal) soliton. Form2l2<1/2, however, this transition unlikely occurs but a phase transition between the BTZ black hole and the massless BTZ black hole is possible to occur. We may call the latter the inverse Hawking-Page phase transition and this transition is favored in the new massive gravity.

In this paper, we explore the photon region and the shadow of the rotating counterpart of a static charged Weyl black hole, which has been previously discussed according to null and time-like geodesics. The rotating black hole shows strong sensitivity to the electric charge and the spin parameter, and its shadow changes from being oblate to being sharp by increasing in the spin parameter. Comparing the calculated vertical angular diameter of the shadow with that of M87*, we found that the latter may possess about 1036 protons as its source of electric charge, if it is a rotating charged Weyl black hole. A complete derivation of the ergosphere and the static limit is also presented.
