Rock burst is one of the most serious disasters that can occur in mining. However, studies of mine disaster prevention and hydraulic support still face a lack of large scale high-speed and high-power impact loading test equipment for the simulation of rock bursts. Considering the coexistence of quasistatic loading, dynamic loading, and static-dynamic composite loading in rock bursts, an impact test machine was designed based on hydraulic loading to achieve the maximum impact force of 2000 kN and maximum impact velocity of 10 m/s to simulate the impact of actual rock bursts in this study. In the design process, the action principle and loading characteristics of the rock burst were first analyzed, and on this basis, the hydraulic loading system was designed using theoretical calculations as well as simulation. Requirements related to laboratory experiments were used to determine the technical parameters and structure of the test machine. The main frame of the test machine was designed according to the load requirements, and the dynamic characteristics of the main frame under the impact condition were analyzed. According to the results of the calculations and simulations, a prototype was manufactured, on which a no-loading impact test and crash box impact test were carried out. The test results validated the effectiveness of the test machine. The development of this impact test machine provides the necessary means for the research and development of anti-impact support equipment.

When a simple structure collides with inclined barrier, behavior and deformation of the structure after impact are different in the case in which the structure slides on a contact surface or the case in which it does not slide. In order to investigate the structural collapse behavior for oblique collided structure, therefore, it is important to clarify the sliding behavior of the structure on the contact surface. The sliding behavior of the structure during collision was estimated according to theoretically obtained the equation considering the equilibrium of change in the momentum and the impulse before and after the collision. For evaluating the sliding behavior of the simple structure, the impact test by the drop type impact testing machine was carried out to collide with inclined barrier. In the impact test, the circular plate of 60 mm diameter and 10 mm thickness was used as the simple structure, and impacted with various collision velocities (range from 2 to 6 m/s). The sliding behavior of the simple structure at the collided surface was observed by high speed camera, and evaluated by the image analysis. The theoretical result was compared to evaluate with experimental results.

Stainless steels are used for the construction of numerous spent nuclear fuel or radioactive material containers that may be subjected to high strains and moderate strain rates (10 to 200 per second) during accidental drop events. Mechanical characteristics of these materials under dynamic (impact) loads in the strain rate range of concern are not well documented. The goal of the work presented in this paper was to improve understanding of moderate strain rate phenomena on these materials. Utilizing a drop-weight impact test machine and relatively large test specimens (1/2-inch thick), initial test efforts focused on the tensile behavior of specific stainless steel materials during impact loading. Impact tests of 304L and 316L stainless steel test specimens at two different strain rates, 25 per second (304L and 316L material) and 50 per second (304L material) were performed for comparison to their quasi-static tensile test properties. Elevated strain rate stress-strain curves for the two materials were determined using the impact test machine and a “total impact energy” approach. This approach considered the deformation energy required to strain the specimens at a given strain rate. The material data developed was then utilized in analytical simulations to validate the final elevated stress-strain curves. The procedures used during testing and the results obtained are described in this paper.

In this study, the effects of temperature and impactor nose diameter on the impact behavior of woven glass-reinforced polyamide 6 (PA6) and polypropylene (PP) thermoplastic composites were investigated experimentally. Impact energies are chosen as 10, 30, 50, 70, 90, 110, 130, and 170 J. The thickness of composite materials is 4 mm. Impact tests were performed using a drop weight impact testing machine, CEAST-Fractovis Plus, and the load capacity of test machine is 22 kN. Hemispherical impactor nose diameter of 12, 7, and 20 mm were used as an impactor. The tests are conducted at room temperature (20°C and 75°C). As a result, the PP composites of the same thickness absorbed more energy than PA6 composites. The amount of absorbed energy of PP and PA6 composites decreased with temperature.

The impact specimens with different hydrogen contents were solution treated at 540±3°C for 12h; water quenched at 60-100°C; and aged at 165±1°C for 6h. The impact test was carried out at Roell450 pendulum impact testing machine. The impact test results show that the impact energy has strong relation with the hydrogen content. The total absorption energy increases with the increasing of hydrogen content. The crack propagation energy Avp and present larger proportion than the initial crack energy Avi in the total absorption energy Av. The number of the pinholes increases and the pinholes turn from smaller irregular ones into sub-circular shape ones. The specimen with irregular sub-circular pinholes has larger KI, and has more crack propagation resistance.

Experimental impact tests were performed using a shock machine and aerated water by means of an air-bubble generator. High speed shock test machine allows carrying out tests of impact on water (slamming). This machine permits to stabilise velocity with a maximal error equal to 10% during slamming tests. The air volume fraction in the bubble was measured by optical probe technique. The present work is aimed at quantifying the effects of the aeration on the hydrodynamic loads and pressures during the entry of a rigid body at constant speed in an air-water mixture. The impact tests were conducted with a rigid pyramid for an impact velocity equal to 15 m.s−1 and for two average void fractions, 0,46% and 0,84%. The reduction of the impact force and pressure due to aeration has been confirmed by these experiments.

Response of brittle plate to impact loads has been the subject of many research studies [1–7]. Specifically, glass presents a wide variety of applications in daily life, and helps to protect the displays of smartphones, tablets, PCs, and TVs from everyday wear and tear. Therefore, the necessity of glass to resist scratches, drop impacts, and bumps from everyday use leads to the importance of investigation of the glass response under dynamic impact loading. The ball drop test has been applied in the past, specifying an energy threshold as a prediction metric. Use of energy as the key parameter in impact testing is limited, since it does not account for the time spent in contact during the impact event. This study attempts to establish a reliable metric for impact testing based on a momentum change threshold. The deformation and the strain of the glass will be obtained by the Digital Image Correlation (DIC) system, while the rebound velocity will be measured with the high speed cameras. The global and local measurements are conducted to verify the accuracy of the experimental results. Finally, the FEA model is developed using ANSYS/LS-DYNA to provide a comprehensive understanding of the dynamic response of the glass. Excellent correlation in deflection is obtained between the measurements and predictions.

In high-speed gear drive and power transmission, system impact failure mode always occurs due to the sudden impact and shock loading during the system in running. Therefore, study on the amount of impact energy that can be absorbed by a gear is vital. Impact test equipment has been designed and modelled for the purpose to study the impact energy on gear tooth. This paper mainly focused on Finite Element Analysis (FEA) of impact energy that occurred during simulation involving the impact test equipment modelling. The simulation was conducted using Abaqus software on critical parts of the test equipment to simulate the impact event and generate impact data for analysis. The load cell in the model was assumed to be free fall at a certain height which gives impact load to the test gear. Three different type of material for the test gear were set up in this simulation. Results from the simulation show that each material possesses different impact energy characteristic. Impact energy values increased along with the height of load drop. AISI 1040 were found to be the toughest material at 3.0m drop that could withstand up to 44.87N.m of impact energy. These data will be used to validate data in physical experiments in further study.

Nanocomposites attracted the attention of scientists due to their superior mechanical, thermal, chemical and electrical properties. This research studied the impact of adding carbon nanotubes (CNTs) to the woven Kevlar laminated composites on the high and low speed impact characteristics. Different percentages of CNTs were added to the woven Kevlar-Vinylester composite materials. An in-house developed drop weight testing apparatus was utilized for the low speed impact testing. Two different concentrations of the CNTs were added to a 15-layer woven Kevlar laminates, 0.32 wt% and 0.8 wt%. The results showed that: The 0.32 wt % CNT sample enhanced the interlaminar strength of the composite without enhancing the energy absorption capacity whereas, the 0.8 wt % CNT sample did not improve the impact resistance of the Kevlar composite.For the high speed impact tests, a bulletproof vest was prepared using woven Kevlar, resin, and CNTs at 1.5 w% percentage. The ballistic shooting was carried out by a professional shooter using a 30 caliber and 9 mm bullets for the tests. The CNT bulletproof sample bounced back the 30 caliber copper alloy bullet with no penetration.

The study presents the need for instrumented testing to optimizing materials against impact forces. The objective of the study is how the impact behaviour of composite materials is investigated by slow and high speed impact tests. Instron Dynatup 9250HV and Instron Dynatup 8150 Impact test machines (Fig.1.) are used which are located in TUBITAK-MRC, Materials Institute , Impact Test Laboratory". The damage process in composite materials under low and high velocity impact loading and the impact energy-displacement properties of the composite materials were investigated. Composite samples were produced by woven fabrics. The results are given as graphs and tables. The Impulse Data Acquisition software is used to send the data to computer.

Cracking of carrot (Daucus carota L.) roots during harvest and handling is a serious problem for the commercial industry, particularly for `cut and peeled' products. Thirty commercial fields of cv. `Sugar Snax' in California were surveyed over the period 2000-03. Soil texture was determined, and soil and crop nutrient status, air temperature and soil moisture were monitored. In 10 fields the effect of excessive N fertilization was investigated; 90-180 kg·ha-1 N was sidedressed in addition to the growers' N regime. At one site a comparison of 10 cultivars was conducted to determine the root cracking sensitivity of commercial cultivars suitable for the cut and peeled market. In all fields roots were hand harvested, with undamaged roots 18-24 mm in diameter selected for study. Roots were cooled to 5 °C and subjected to an impact test to rate cracking sensitivity. Fields varied widely in root cracking sensitivity, with 4% to76% of roots cracked in the impact test. Cracking sensitivity was positively correlated with the % silt and clay in soil, and with air temperature in the final month of growth. Irrigation management had no consistent effect on cracking sensitivity. N application in excess of the growers' N regime did not increase carrot yield, but increased root cracking sensitivity by an average of 30%. Root cracking varied among cultivars from 10% to 49%. However, when the periderm was peeled from roots before impact testing, incidence of cracking declined to 2% or less in all cultivars. Periderm strength or flexibility is apparently the dominant factor in carrot cracking sensitivity, and environmental and management variables that affect cracking sensitivity must do so by affecting the periderm structure.
