The control and prevention of rock burst in a steeply inclined coal seam are essential. In order to figure out the effects of filling and mining sequence on rock burst in the steeply inclined coal seam, B3+6 and B1+2 coal seams in Wudong coal mine are chosen as the research objects, and an in-house experiment system of similarity simulation is established in this study. Combined with numerical simulation, the characteristics of collapse, stress distribution, and displacement variations can be measured, which provide useful information to study the effects of the filling body and mining sequence on rock burst. Experimental results show that the key reason for rock burst in a steeply inclined coal seam is the stress concentration of the rock pillar between B3+6 and B1+2 coal seams instead of the stress-lever-effect of a deeper rock pillar. The filling body can support the middle rock pillar, share the geological structure stress in the horizontal and vertical direction, eliminate the stress concentration zone largely, and prevent the occurrence of rock burst. When multiple working faces are working, the opposite side of the coal seam should be mined first to release the energy in the rock in advance, thus preventing the rock burst effectively. The research results provide fundamental information for better understanding the reason for rock burst and preventing rock burst in the steeply inclined coal seam.

Roadway deformation and rock burst are the two key challenges faced by the safe operation of coal mines. Aiming at the issue of large deformation of the gob-side roadway under coal pillars in multiseam mining, this study has considered the case of the 8308 panel of Xinzhouyao coal mine in China. Based upon a combination of theoretical analysis, numerical simulations, and engineering practices, the mechanical model of “stress and deformation quantitative calculation of gob-side roadway under overlying coal pillars” was established in this study. The analytical solutions of the vertical stress distribution and the plastic zone of the gob-side roadway under overlying coal pillars were obtained. Finally, the accuracy of the mechanical model was verified using numerical simulations. The results showed that the coal pillar, upright above the gob-side roadway, and the cantilever roof around the gob-side roadway were the main factors leading to stress concentration and deformation around the gob-side roadway. For the particular cases considered in this study, the peak stress of the gob-side roadway could reach 1.8 times of the self-weight stress of overlying strata. The rates of the contribution of the gob-side roadway’s overlying pillar and the cantilever roof around the gob-side roadway to peak stress were 78.3% and 16%, respectively. The obtained results have an essential reference significance for stress calculations and rock burst prevention design of gob-side roadway under overlying coal pillars in multiseam mining.

The rock burst proneness of coal is closely related to the coal mass structure. Therefore, the initial crack distribution of high burst proneness coal, its fracture development, and failure process under loading conditions are of great significance for the prediction of rock burst. In this study, high burst proneness coal is used to prepare experiment samples. The surface cracks of the samples are identified and recorded. The internal crack of the sample is detected by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) technology to determine the crack ratio of each sample. Then, 3D-CAD technology is used to restore the initial crack of the samples. Uniaxial compression test is carried out, and AE properties are recorded in the test. The stress-strain curve, the distribution of the fractural points within the sample at different stress states, and the relationship between ring count and stress are obtained. Results show that the stress-strain curves of high burst proneness coal are almost linear, to which the stress-ring count curves are similar. The distributions of fractural points in different bearing states show that the fracture points emerge in the later load stage and finally penetrate to form macrofracture, resulting in sample failure. This study reveals the initial crack distribution of coal with high burst proneness and the fracture development under bearing conditions, which provides a theoretical basis for the prediction technology of rock burst and technical support for the research of coal structure.

In response to the increasing severity of the rock burst phenomenon and its relatively difficult prediction, peridynamics and indoor uniaxial compression experiments were used to calculate the changes of the internal elastic energy (t) and impact energy (c) for different rock masses during a loading process from an energy perspective. Two traditional indices for judging rock burst tendency—the rock elastic deformation energy index (WET) and the rock impact energy index (WCF)—were combined to define a new actual impact energy index (W) to more accurately determine the occurrence tendency of rock bursts. The LAMMPS software was used to simulate the internal energy changes of rock materials under pressure, and the results were compared with experimental results for verification. The results were as follows: (1) in the uniaxial compression experiments of different specimens, fine sandstone had the strongest impact resistance, followed by coarse sandstone, mudstone, bottom coal seam, and top coal seam, and the obtained material properties provide a reference for predicting the rock bursts of various rock types in practical engineering. (2) The values calculated using the actual impact energy index (W) and the simulation value were 1.75 and 1.77, respectively, which corresponded to a lower error than when the rock impact energy index (WCF) and the rock elastic deformation energy index (WET) were used individually. Thus, this index can better predict the rock burst. (3) The simulated specimen was subjected to a gradual increase in the internal stored elastic energy during compression, which gradually decreased after the ultimate compressive strength was exceeded. The degree of impact damage formed after macroscopic crushing occurred depended on its residual energy.

With the increase in coal mining depth, engineering geological conditions and the stress environment become more complex. Many rock bursts triggered by two combined faults have been observed in China, but the mechanism is not understood clearly. The focus of this research aims at investigating the influence of two combined faults on rock burst mechanisms. The six types of two combined faults were first introduced, and two cases were utilized to show the effects of two combined faults types on coal mining. The mechanical response of the numerical model with or without combined faults was compared, and a conceptual model was set up to explain the rock burst mechanism triggered by two combined faults. The influence of fault throw, dip, fault pillar width, and mining height on rock burst potential was analyzed. The main control factors of rock burst in six models that combined two faults were identified by an orthogonal experiment. Results show that six combinations of two faults can be identified, including stair-stepping fault, imbricate fault, graben fault, horst fault, back thrust fault, and ramp fault. The particular roof structure near the two combined faults mining preventing longwall face lateral abutment pressure from transferring to deep rock mass leads to stress concentration near the fault areas. Otherwise, a special roof structure causing the lower system stiffness of mining gives rise to the easier gathering of elastic energy in the coal pillars, which makes it easier to trigger a rock burst. There is a nonlinear relationship between fault parameters and static or dynamic load for graben faults mining. The longwall face has the highest rock burst risk when the fault throw is between 6 and 8 m, the fault dip is larger than 65°, the mining height is greater than 6 m, and the coal pillar width is less than 50 m. The stair-stepping, imbricate, horst, and ramp fault compared to the other fault types will produce higher dynamic load stress during longwall retreat. Fault pillar width is the most significant factor for different two combined faults, leading to the rise of static load stress and dynamic proneness.

A rock burst accident occurred on coalface 13230 of the Gengcun Coal Mine in Henan Province. Through a field investigation, theoretical analysis, and microseismic monitoring, we studied how the rock burst, which was caused by overall seam floor slip and instability, occurring under an ultrathick conglomerate. Because the overlying ultrathick conglomerate in the mined-out zone close to coalface 13230 had been inadequately mined, the leading section of the coalface was under a high level of stress. Combined with the tectonic stresses from the F16 faultage and the soft floor structure, these factors caused the floor of this coalface to trigger the overall slip-type rock burst. In this paper, an estimation model of the ultimate bearing capacity of a seam floor under an ultrathick conglomerate and the advancing abutment pressure on the coalface is presented. This model is used to show that the ultimate bearing capacity of the seam floor on coalface 13230 is 26.3 MPa, and the abutment pressure is far more than the floor bearing capacity. We also present pressure relief and reinforced supporting measures, which can effectively prevent floor slip-type rock bursts from occurring. The results of this study provide a reference for the prevention and control of floor slip-type rock bursts in coal mining under an ultrathick conglomerate.

Rock burst is a catastrophic phenomenon that often occurs in underground rock mass engineering. In order to reveal the essence of rock burst of a hard roof in the process of roadway excavation, the particle discrete element method is used to establish a roadway model and simulate the disturbance of harmonic dynamic load based on the analysis of a rock burst accident in a deep mine. The crack field, stress field, displacement field, and kinetic energy of roadway surrounding rock disturbed by cyclic dynamic load were analyzed, and the disaster mechanism of roadway impacting roof instability was discussed. The results show that, compared with the roadway support structure under static load that can give full play to its control function of surrounding rock, the roadway surrounding rock will collapse and lose stability in a large area under the roof cyclic dynamic load, and the ordinary supporting structure cannot give full play to its control function of surrounding rock, resulting in the surrounding rock destruction and supporting structure failure. In addition, the essence of rock burst in a hard thick roof is due to the instantaneous superposition of static stress and dynamic load, leading to the instantaneous instability and collapse of roadway roof in a large area. The research is of great significance to further understand the deformation and failure mechanism of roadway surrounding rock under strong impact load, to guide the safe production and prevent the occurrence of rock burst hazard in underground rock mass engineering.

When studying the rock burst mechanism in subvertical extra-thick coal seams in the Wudong coal mine in Xinjiang, China, most studies focus on rock pillars, while the effect of the roof on rock bursts is usually ignored. In this paper, a rock burst mechanism in subvertical extra-thick coal seams under the control of a “roof-rock pillar” is proposed. A theoretical analysis is first performed to explain the effect of roof-rock pillar combinations on rock bursts in coal seams. Numerical modeling and microseismic analysis are implemented to further study the mechanism of rock burst. The main conclusions are as follows: 1) During the mining of the B3+6 coal seam, an obvious microseismic concentration phenomenon is found in both the roof and rock pillar of B3+6. The rock bursts exhibited obvious directionality, and its main failure characteristics are floor heave and sidewall heave, but there will also be some failures such as shoulder socket subsidence in some parts. 2) The stress transfer caused by rock pillar prying is the main reason for the large difference in rock burst occurrence near the vertical and extra thick adjacent coal seams under the same mining depth. 3) Under the same cantilever length, the elastic deformation energy of the roof is much greater than that of the rock pillar, which makes it easier to produce high-energy microseismic events. With an increasing mining depth, the roof will become the dominant factor controlling the occurrence of rock bursts. 4) The high-energy event produced by the rock mass fracture near the coal rock interface easily induces rock bursts, while the high-energy event produced by the fracture at the far end of the rock mass is less likely to induce rock burst. 5) Roof deformation extrusion and rock pillar prying provide high static stress conditions for the occurrence of rock bursts in the B3+6 coal seam. The superposition of the dynamic disturbance caused by roof and rock pillar failure and the high static stress of the coal seam is the main cause of rock burst in the B3+6 coal seam.

Promoting the ability of anti-bursting of the confining rock of a coal roadway is of significant importance to the safe production of a coal mine. In particular, in deep-buried coal mines, highly frequent rock burst occurs due to large earth pressure and complex geological conditions, which needs serious improvement. This paper investigated a type of confining rock modified method, which can modify the physical properties of the surrounding rock and form a crack region and a reinforced region by blasting and grouting reinforcement. Based on a set of physical model experiments and numerical modeling, the results of a comparative analysis between a normal roadway and the modified roadway in the static stress redistribution, dynamic stress, damage evolution, and energy dissipation suggest that the modified confining rock is capable of protecting the coal roadway against rock burst from roof stratum, obviously reducing and transferring the concentered static–dynamic stress out of the cracked region, dissipating the dynamic energy by plastic damage in the cracked region, and keeping the integrity of the reinforced region. In addition, the velocity of the dynamic stress vibration wave at the surface of the modified coal roadway is obviously reduced, which is beneficial for decreasing the movement of cracked rock blocks and protecting the lives and goods in the coal roadway.

In order to prevent the multi-dynamic disasters induced by rock burst and roof water inrush in strong rock burst coal seams under multi-aquifers, such as is the case with the 207 working face in the Tingnan coal mine considered in this study, the exhibited characteristics of two types of dynamic disasters, namely rock burst and water inrush, were analyzed. Based on the lithology and predicted caving height of the roof, the contradiction between rock burst and water inrush was analyzed. In light of these analyses, an integrated method, roof pre-splitting at a high position and shattering at a low position, was proposed. According to the results of numerical modelling, pre-crack blasting at higher rock layers enables a cantilever roof cave in time, thereby reducing the risk of rock burst, and pre-crack blasting at underlying rock layers helps increase the crushing degree of the rock, which is beneficial for decreasing the caving height of rock layers above goaf, thereby preventing the occurrence of water inrush. Finally, the proposed method was applied in an engineering case, and the effectiveness of this method for prevention and control of multi-dynamics disasters was evaluated by field observations of the caving height of rock layers and micro-seismic monitoring. As a result, the proposed method works well integrally to prevent and control rock burst and water inrush.
