We propose a high-performance and robust control of a transformerless, single-phase PV inverter in the standalone mode. First, modeling and design of a DC-DC boost converter using a nonlinear back-stepping control was presented. The proposed converter uses a reference voltage that is generated by the Perturb and Observe (P&O) algorithm in order to extract the maximum power point (MPP) by responding accurately to varying atmospheric conditions. Another goal for using the boost converter is to raise the voltage at the input of the inverter without using a transformer in this system, thus making the system more compact and less expensive. Secondly, the single-phase H-bridge inverter was controlled by using back-stepping control in order to eliminate the error between the output voltage of the inverter and the desired value, even if there is acute load variation at the output of the inverter. The stability of the boost converter and H-bridge inverter was validated by using Lyapunov’s stability theory. Simulation results show that the proposed PV system with back-stepping controllers has a good extraction of the MPP with an efficiency of 99.93% and 1 ms of response time. In addition, the sinusoidal form of the output voltage of the inverter is fixed to 220 V and the total harmonic distortion of the output voltage was found to be less than 1%.

Generally, AC-AC converters are implemented using thyristors. These converters generate harmonics and have a low power factor. To eliminate these problems matrix converters (MC) are become used as AC-AC converter. Matrix converters have the capability of being used as frequency changer, rectifier, inverter and chopper. In this work, it is proposed to achieve the desired output of AC-AC Boost converter using single phase matrix converter (SPMC). The operation of single-phase AC-AC boost converter using MC is studied in this paper. The output voltage of this boost converter is higher than the AC input supply voltage. insulated gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs) are used as the switching elements in the SPMC power circuit. Sinusoidal Pulse width modulation (SPWM) technique is applied to generate switching signals to obtain the output voltage. The model of the matrix converter is constructed in MATLAB/Simulink programming software package. The behavior of SPMC is simulated with various switching frequencies. The simulation results together with harmonic spectrum and total harmonic distortion (THD) values are presented. Successful operation of boost SPMC is achieved.

In the traditional single-phase grid-connected photovoltaic(PV) system, the output grid-current has the shortcoming of high harmonic distortion rate. In order to solve the problem, an improved method on the inverter is proposed. The inverter consists of full-bridge circuit and auxiliary circuit. With the multi-carrier PWM, the inverter produces output voltages in five levels, which can reduce the THD of the grid current. At the same time, the hysteresis comparison method is introduced into traditional MPPT algorithm, which greatly avoids the oscillation problem of the maximum power point. At last, the simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

The Photovoltaic standalone system is gaining its high importance mostly for rural application like pv water pumping, solar lighting, battery charging etc.Considering environmental effects and scarcity of fossil fuel the trend has developed towards the use of more and more renewable energy. In this paper a basic circuit of boost converter is designed in MATLAB/Simulink with constant dc source voltage. However a comparative study has also been done for the converter connected with pv system directly with the converter connected with mppt tracking technique. Perturb and Observance (P&O) algorithm is implemented for providing the necessary duty pulse and makes the system operate at maximum power point. The boost converter connected with PV system without mppt operates at any other point other then the maximum power point and hence the output voltage decreases. But with mppt the proposed system performs better.

Fault analysis in solar photovoltaic (PV) arrays is a fundamental task to protect PV modules from damage and to eliminate risks of safety hazards. This paper focuses on line-line faults in PV arrays that may be caused by short-circuit faults or double ground faults. The effect on fault current from a maximum-power-point tracking of a PV inverter is discussed and shown to, at times, prevent overcurrent protection devices (OCPDs) to operate properly. Furthermore, fault behavior of PV arrays is highly related to the fault location, fault impedance, irradiance level, and use of blocking diodes. Particularly, this paper examines the challenges to OCPD in a PV array brought by unique faults: One is a fault that occurs under low-irradiance conditions, and the other is a fault that occurs at night and evolves during “night-to-day” transition. In both circumstances, the faults might remain hidden in the PV system, no matter how irradiance changes afterward. These unique faults may subsequently lead to unexpected safety hazards, reduced system efficiency, and reduced reliability. A small-scale experimental PV system has been developed to further validate the conclusions.

This paper presents a novel digital control scheme for the regulation of single-phase voltage source pulse width modulation (PWM) inverters used in AC power sources. The proposed scheme adopts two deadbeat controllers to regulate the inner current loop and the outer voltage loop of the PWM inverter. For the overhead of digital processing, the change of duty of PWM lags one carrier period behind the sampling signal, which is modeled as a first-order lag unit in a discrete domain. Based on this precise modeling, the deadbeat controllers make the inverter get a fast dynamic response, so that the inverter’s output voltage is obtained with a very low total harmonic distortion (THD), even when the load is fluctuating. The parameter sensitivity of the deadbeat control was analyzed, which shows that the proposed deadbeat control system can operate stably when the LC filter’s parameters vary within the range allowed. The experimental results of a 2kW inverter prototype show that the THD of the output voltage is less than 3% under resistive and rectifier loads, which verifies the feasibility of the proposed scheme. An additional advantage of the proposed scheme is that the parameter design of the controller can be fully programmed without the experience of a designer.

The most concerns in the inverter's design are about, how to make the output voltage of the inverter sinusoidal at the desired fundamental frequency with low total harmonic distortion (THD). This paper presents a design and implementation of single-phase five-level inverter which is powered by single dc source and based on T-type multi-level inverters construction. The proposed inverter is built mainly by six IGBTs and two diodes. The used modulation technique is based on using two triangular carriers at 2000 Hz frequency and shifted by phase opposition disposition (POD) method. The carriers are made slightly unbalanced with their amplitudes. The over-modulation method is also introduced in the design to get the lowest possible THD effect without using filters. The inverter is simulated by MATLAB SIMULINK, implemented practically, and tested with the help of LabVIEW software.

This paper develops the photovoltaic bidirectional inverter (BI) operated in dual mode for the seamless power transfer to DC and AC loads. Normal photovoltaic (PV) output voltage is fed to boost converter, but in space application, boost converter is not so preferable. To overcome this, buck and boost converters are proposed in this paper. Duty cycle to this converter is provided with the help of the outcome of the maximum power point tracking (MPPT) controller. This can be implemented by using perturbation and observation method. The MPPT will operate the switch between buck and boost modes. When the output voltage of a PV array is close to the dc bus voltage, then the bidirectional inverter can fulfill both rectification and grid connected mode. To control the power flow between dc bus and ac grid, a dc distribution system is used to regulate the dc bus voltage to a convinced level. Moreover, the bidirectional inverter must fulfill grid connection (sell power) and rectification (buy power) with power factor correction (PFC) to control the power flow between dc bus and ac grid. The simulations and hardware experimental results of a 2.5 kVA circuit are presented to validate the performance of the proposed dual-mode seamless power transfer.
