In this article, a difference-coarray-based direction of arrival (DOA) method is introduced, which utilizes the uniform linear array (ULA) in a novel fashion to address the problem of DOA estimation for coherent signals. Inspired by the coarray-based estimators employed in cases of sparse arrays, we convert the sample covariance matrix of the observed signals into the difference coarray domain and process the signals using a spatial smoothing technique. The proposed method exhibits good accuracy and robustness in both the uncorrelated and coherent cases. Numerical simulations verify that the ULA difference coarray- (UDC-) based method can achieve good DOA estimation accuracy even when the SNR is very low. In addition, the UDC-based method is insensitive to the number of snapshots. Under extremely challenging conditions, the proposed UDC-ES-DOA method is preferred because of its outstanding robustness, while the UDC-MUSIC method is suitable for most moderate cases of lower complexity. Due to its demonstrated advantages, the proposed method is a promising and competitive solution for practical DOA estimation, especially for low-SNR or snapshot-limited applications.

Coprime array isAsparse array composed of two uniform linear arrays with different spacing. When the two subarrays are inAnon-coherent distributed configuration, the direction of arrival (DOA) method based on the covariance analysis of the complete coprime array is no longer effective. According to the essential attribute that the distance between the elements of two subarrays can eliminate the angle ambiguity, based on the mathematical derivation, Aspatial spectral product DOA estimation method for incoherent distributed coprime arrays is proposed. Firstly, the spatial spectrum of each subarray is calculated by using the snapshot data of each subarray, and then the DOA estimation is realized by multiplying the spatial spectrum of each subarray. The simulation results show that the estimation accuracy and angle resolution of the present method are better than those of the traditional ambiguity resolution methods, and the estimation performance is good in the mutual coupling and low SNR environment, with the good adaptability and stability. Moreover, by using the flexibility of distributed array, the matching error is effectively solved through the rotation angle.

Direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation in multipath environment is an important issue for passive bistatic radar (PBR) using frequency agile phased array VHF radar as illuminator of opportunity. Under such scenario, the main focus of this paper is to cope with the closely spaced uncorrelated and coherent signals in low signal-to-noise ratio and limited snapshots. Making full use of the characteristics of moduli of eigenvalues, the DOAs of the uncorrelated signals are firstly estimated. Afterwards, their contributions are eliminated by means of spatial difference technique. Finally, in order to improve resolution and accuracy DOA estimation of remaining coherent signals while avoiding the cross-terms effect, a new beamforming solution based iterative adaptive approach (IAA) is proposed to deal with a reconstructed covariance matrix. The proposed method combines the advantages of both spatial difference method and the IAA algorithm while avoiding their shortcomings. Simulation results validate its effectiveness; meanwhile, the good performances of the proposed method in terms of resolution probability, detection probability, and estimation accuracy are demonstrated by comparison with the existing methods.

This paper addresses the direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation problem using a uniform rectangular array with electromagnetic vector-sensors in correlated/coherent signal environments. The polarization information is separated from the steering matrix to decorrelate the signals. By developing a tensorial structured received measurements of the array, we propose a tensor-based eigenvector DOA estimation method. Then we apply the forward-backward averaging to the tensor since it obeys the centro-Hermitian structure. In addition, a tensor-based polarization parameters estimation method is presented. The proposed algorithms are superior to the state-of-the-art algorithms in terms of estimation accuracy of coherent signals while only demand a modest computation burden comparing with the latter ones. Simulation results are given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methods under different scenarios.

A gridless direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation method to improve the estimation accuracy and resolution in nonuniform noise is proposed in this paper. This algorithm adopts the structure of minimum-redundancy linear array (MRA) and can be composed of two stages. In the first stage, by minimizing the rank of the covariance matrix of the true signal, the covariance matrix that filters out nonuniform noise is obtained, and then a gridless residual energy constraint scheme is designed to reconstruct the signal covariance matrix of the Hermitian Toeplitz structure. Finally, the unknown DOAs can be determined from the recovered covariance matrix, and the number of sources can be acquired as a byproduct. The proposed algorithm can be regarded as a gridless version method based on sparsity. Simulation results indicate that the proposed method has higher estimation accuracy and resolution compared with existing algorithms.

A method of direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation using array interpolation is proposed in this paper to increase the number of resolvable sources and improve the DOA estimation performance for coprime array configuration with holes in its virtual array. The virtual symmetric nonuniform linear array (VSNLA) of coprime array signal model is introduced, with the conventional MUSIC with spatial smoothing algorithm (SS-MUSIC) applied on the continuous lags in the VSNLA; the degrees of freedom (DoFs) for DOA estimation are obviously not fully exploited. To effectively utilize the extent of DoFs offered by the coarray configuration, a compressing sensing based array interpolation algorithm is proposed. The compressing sensing technique is used to obtain the coarse initial DOA estimation, and a modified iterative initial DOA estimation based interpolation algorithm (IMCA-AI) is then utilized to obtain the final DOA estimation, which maps the sample covariance matrix of the VSNLA to the covariance matrix of a filled virtual symmetric uniform linear array (VSULA) with the same aperture size. The proposed DOA estimation method can efficiently improve the DOA estimation performance. The numerical simulations are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract In this paper, we propose an improved convolutional neural network (CNN) to solve the multi-DOA estimation problem. We use Khatri-Rao (KR) product to obtain the KR image tensor of covariance matrix and use the proposed estimation CNN to process the tensor. In order to increase the generalization of the proposed CNN and adapt the multi-label classification problem, we use the curriculum learning scheme (CLS) and partial label strategy (PLS) to develop an efficient training procedure. We implement several experiments to demonstrate the satisfying performance of the proposed estimation method. The simulation results show that our proposed method can finish the high resolution multi-DOA estimation use only a few sensors. Furthermore, the proposed method can obtain high estimation accuracy under low SNR situations and use fewer snapshots.

A new direction of arrival (DOA) estimation method is proposed for coherent GPS signals, which applies to the GPS receiver with rich multipath, strong interference and low SNR. In this method, the interference is first suppressed by projecting the received signal onto the interference orthogonal subspace. Afterwards, the noise is eliminated by the spatial difference matrix. Then, the coherent GPS signals are decorrelated by the reconstructed Toeplitz matrix, and the DOA estimation is improved by a new constructed matrix. The proposed method can obtain more accurate DOA estimation for coherent GPS signals with strong interference and low SNR in the GPS receiver. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed method.

This paper considers the problem of estimating the direction of arrival (DOA) for the both incoherent and coherent signals from narrowband sources, located in the far field in the case of uniform linear array sensors. Three different methods are analyzed. Specifically, these methods are Music, Root-Music and ESPRIT. The pros and cons of these methods are identified and compared in light of different viewpoints. The performance of the three methods is evaluated, analytically, when possible, and by Matlab simulation. This paper can be a roadmap for beginners in understanding the basic concepts of DOA estimation issues, properties and performance.

The performance of a direction-finding system is significantly degraded by the imperfection of an array. In this paper, the direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation problem is investigated in the uniform linear array (ULA) system with the unknown mutual coupling (MC) effect. The system model with MC effect is formulated. Then, by exploiting the signal sparsity in the spatial domain, a compressed-sensing (CS)-based system model is proposed with the MC coefficients, and the problem of DOA estimation is converted into that of a sparse reconstruction. To solve the reconstruction problem efficiently, a novel DOA estimation method, named sparse-based DOA estimation with unknown MC effect (SDMC), is proposed, where both the sparse signal and the MC coefficients are estimated iteratively. Simulation results show that the proposed method can achieve better performance of DOA estimation in the scenario with MC effect than the state-of-the-art methods, and improve the DOA estimation performance about 31.64 % by reducing the MC effect by about 4 dB.
