We investigate a circularly polarized (CP) transmission-line antenna composed of loop radiation elements, called a loop-line antenna. To enhance the CP wave bandwidth, an isolated loop radiation element is first analyzed using the method of moments. It is found that a CP wave bandwidth for a 3 dB axial-ratio criterion has a maximum value of 8%. On the basis of the analysis results, we design the loop-line antenna. It is found that the antenna shows a CP wave bandwidth of 6%, which is twice as wide as that of a conventional loop-line antenna. The analysis results are verified with experimental ones. In addition, a condition for wideband CP radiation is discussed and found to be a composite radiation element consisting of two CP loops.

The development of SAR radar technology (Synthetic Aperture Radar) and aircraft as the carrier media is relatively fast and demands the need for communication facilities and infrastructure that have a variety of platforms and high-quality imaging, which can produce processed data with high resolution and good images for all type explored terrain. Based on the demands of the progress of civilization, the antenna placed on the carrier media should have simple, compact, thin, and conformal characteristics. This research will analyze and study the need for a single, low power microstrip antenna in the L-band (1.25 GHz - 1.27 GHz) for CP (Circularly Polarized)-SAR radar applications. The use of Method of Moments (MoM) show that the result of characteristic performance and S-parameter for the single triangular truncated patch stack Left-Handed Circular Polarization (LHCP) antenna, f = 1.25 GHz, are consecutively 7.23 dBic of gain, 0.51 of axial ratio, -16.35 dB of S-parameter.

Two types of modified crossed-wire antennas are investigated to enhance a circularly polarized (CP) wave bandwidth. The wire length of each antenna is increased twice as long as that of the original antenna. First, a bent-type antenna is analyzed using the method of moments. It is found that the CP wave bandwidth for a 3 dB axial ratio criterion is twice as wide as that of the original antenna. Next, a spiral-type antenna is analyzed. It is revealed that the antenna shows a CP wave bandwidth of 28%, which is wider than that of the original antenna by a factor of 3.5. The analysis results are validated by experimental work.

AbstractA broadband circularly polarized slotted square patch antenna with horizontal meandered strip (HMS) is presented and studied. The HMS feeding technique provides the good impedance matching and broadside symmetrical radiation patterns. A set of cross asymmetrical slots are etched on the radiating patch to realize the circular polarization. An electrically small stub is added on the edge of the antenna for further improvement in performance. Measured 10-dB impedance bandwidth (IBW) and 3-dB axial ratio bandwidth (ARBW) of the proposed antenna are 32.31 % (3.14–4.35 GHz) and 20.91 % (3.34–4.12 GHz), respectively. The gain of the antenna is varied from 3.5 to 4.86dBi within 3-dB ARBW. Measured results matched well with the simulated results.

This paper presents an original solution to design a compact dual circularly polarized isoflux antenna for nanosatellite applications. This kind of antenna has been previously designed in our laboratory, for a single circular polarization. This antenna is composed of a dual circularly polarized feed and a choke horn antenna. This feed is a cross-shaped slot in the ground plane, which provides coupling between a patch and a ring microstrip line with two ports. It is located at the center of a choke horn antenna. The simulated antenna presents an axial ratio <3 dB and a realized gain close to 0 dB over a 400 MHz bandwidth (8.0–8.4 GHz) at the limit of coverage, i.e. 65° whatever the azimuth angle (φ) and the port. A 20 dB matching for each port and 13 dB isolation characteristics between the two ports have been achieved on this bandwidth. It has been realized and successfully measured.

The circularly polarized (CP) microstrip antennas, both of singly- and doubly-fed types, possess inherent limitation in gain, impedance and axial-ratio bandwidths. These limitations are caused mainly by the natural resonance of the patch antenna which has a high unloaded Q-factor and the frequency-dependent excitation of two degenerative modes (TM01 and TM10) when using a single feed. Many applications which require circular polarization, large bandwidth, and good performance, especially in the field of wireless communication, are still difficult to be designed by using antenna software. Some consideration to take will include the application target and design specification, the materials to be used, and the method to choose (formula, numerical analysis, etc). This paper explains and analyzes the singly-fed microstrip antenna with circular polarization and large bandwidth. This singly-fed type of microstrip antenna provides certain advantage of requiring no external circular polarizer, e.g. the 900 hybrid, as it only needs to apply some perturbation or modification to a patch radiator with a standard geometry. The design of CP and large-bandwidth microstrip antenna is done gradually, by firstly truncating one tip, then truncating the whole three tips, and finally modifying it into a pentagonal patch structure and adding an air-gap to obtain larger bandwidths of impedance, gain and axial ratio. The last one antenna structure results in a novelty because it is a rare design of antenna which includes all types of bandwidth (impedance, gain, and axial ratio) being simultaneously larger than the origin antenna. The resulted characteristic performance of the 1-tip (one-tip) antenna shows respectively 1.9% of impedance bandwidth, 3.1% of gain bandwidth, and 0.45% of axial-ratio bandwidth. For the 3-tip (three-tip) step, the resulted bandwidths of respectively impedance, gain, and axial ratio are 1.7%, 3.3% and 0.5%. The pentagonal structure resulted in the bandwith values of 15.67%, 52.16% and 4.11% respectively for impedance, gain, and axial ratio.

When circularly polarized (CP) microstrip antennas are bent, the polarization becomes elliptical. We present a simple model that describes the phenomenon. The two linear modes present in a CP patch are modeled separately and added together to produce CP. Bending distorts the almost-spherical equiphase surface of a linearly polarized patch, which leads to phase imbalance in the far-field of a CP patch. The model predicts both the frequency shifting of the axial ratio band as well as the narrowing of the axial ratio beam. Uncontrolled bending is a problem associated especially with flexible textile antennas, and wearable antennas should therefore be designed somewhat conformal.

The design and measurement of reconfigurable circularly polarized capacitive fed microstrip antenna are presented. Small isosceles right angle triangular sections are removed from diagonally opposite corners for the generation of circular polarization (CP) of axial ratio bandwidth of 11.1%. Horizontal slits of different lengths are inserted at the edges of the truncated patch to provide the dual-band CP and by switching PIN diodes across the slits ON and OFF, reconfigurable circularly polarized antenna is realized. The antenna shows dual-band behavior with reconfigurable CP. In order to enhance the operation bandwidth of the antenna, an inclined slot was embedded on the patch along with PIN diodes across the horizontal slits. This proposed antenna gave an impedance bandwidth of 66.61% (ON state) ranging from 4.42 to 8.80 GHz and 68.42% (OFF state) ranging from 4.12 to 8.91 GHz and exhibits dual-frequency CP with PIN diode in OFF state and single-frequency CP with PIN diode in ON state with good axial ratio bandwidth. The axial ratio bandwidth of 4.42, 2.35, and 2.72% is obtained from the antenna. The antenna has a similar radiation pattern in all the three different CP bands and almost constant gain within the bands of CP operation.

This paper presents a rectangular-shaped printed monopole antenna with circular polarization for Wi-Fi (2.4–2.484 GHz) and WiMAX (3.3-3.7 GHz) bands. The antenna relies on asymmetric arrangement of the patch with respect to the microstrip feed, in order to generate circular polarization. Dual-band (Wi-Fi and WiMAX) operation is enabled by inserting a slit in the corner of the ground plane. Simulation results show a bandwidth increase of 15.9% (2.2–2.58 GHz) for Wi-Fi, and of 24.16% (3.13–3.99 GHz) for WiMAX applications. Furthermore, beamwidths at the axial ratio of 3 dB equal 48˚ and 51˚ for the x-z plane and y-z planes, respectively.

A single feed microstrip patch elliptically annular antenna array has been proposed for high gain circularly polarized (CP) radiation. An array of elliptically annular patches antenna resonates at a frequency of 3.77 GHz which can be used in satellite communication and radar application. A corporate feed network with quarter-wave transformer has been used for uniform excitation of all the array elements. Thus a good circular polarization is obtained by using a single feed with enhanced gain 15.62 dB compared to single patch. The radiation pattern, axial ratio and input impedance of the proposed elliptically annular antenna array is compared with single element elliptically annular antenna. A substantial gain enhancement with low side lobe level (SLL) is observed keeping circular polarization intact. Further, simulated and measured results of the proposed antenna array have been compared and found that axial ratio and gain are in good agreement.

A novel right-handed circular polarization (RHCP) folded reflectarray antenna with optimized parameters is presented at 60GHz. The RHCP folded reflectarray antenna is designed using left handed circularly polarized selective surface (LHCPSS) Pierrot unit cell. Through simulation, it is shown that the antenna operates well at 60GHz. The maximum antenna directivity is 19dB with a reflection coefficient below -15dB. The radiation patterns showed good responses with side lobes level below -10dB. In addition, the best axial ratio at 60GHz is achieved as 0.75dB.
