Purpose. Interaction and observation are critical skills for occupational therapists who work with pediatric clients. The objective of this study was to investigate whether using standardized child patients within a situated simulation-based (SSB) program increases students’ knowledge and clinical skills when working with children in occupational therapy. Materials and Methods. This controlled trial with multiple measures recruited students from the pediatric occupational therapy curriculum enrolled in an SSB program in consecutive academic years ( n = 62 ). Experimental group students participated in a simulation experience with video training sessions, followed by an SSB exam with standardized child patients; the control group performed the video training simultaneously. Quantitative outcomes included quizzes to measure clinical knowledge, video training scores, and a situated simulation exam to assess clinical skills. Results. The experimental group had a significantly higher postwritten quiz scores than the control group; the video training scores were not significantly different between groups. Linear regression analysis showed a significant association between the SSB exam and postwritten quiz scores ( β = 0.487 , p = 0.017 ). The experimental group had a total pass rate of 65.6% for the SSB exam. The communication and interaction pass rate was 53.1%; the basic evaluation rate was 68.8%, implying that communication/interaction skills are hard to simulate from video training alone; therefore, the authentic fidelity of the SSB program needs to improve further to enhance learning. Conclusions. The SSB program with standardized child patients improved students’ clinical knowledge and skills more than lectures and practice alone. Using standardized child patients in programs or exams appears to positively influence students’ performance. Situated simulation-based learning that allows the realistic practice of observation and communication skills may enhance students’ clinical competency. Future research should develop standard training methods and evaluation processes in high-fidelity simulations for generalized use in other occupational therapy programs.

Abstract Background Boot camp can enable residents to acquire surgical skills and confidence, but they can lose these skills over time if they do not use them. The purpose of this study was to explore whether boot camp and subsequent repetitive practice could strengthen residents’ clinical skills and self-confidence. Methods This is a comparative study of surgical residents who were enrolled in our institution from 2016 to 2017. The residents in the experimental group (enrolled in 2017) received boot camp training and a year of repetitive practice. The control group (enrolled in 2016) only received routine residency training. The rotation assessment pass rates of the two groups during the first year of the residency training were compared. A survey was conducted at different points in time to investigate the influence of boot camp and repetitive practice on the confidence of the residents. Results The assessment pass rate of the experimental group was significantly higher than that of the control group (p < 0.05). The residents’ confidence in themselves improved significantly after the boot camp, and it was comparable to that of the residents in the control group after their first year of residency. The level of self-confidence of the experimental group was further improved after repetitive practice. Finally, residents in the experimental group received better evaluations by their colleagues than the control group received. Conclusions This study showed that boot camp can improve the surgical skills and confidence of residents and that repetitive practice can further strengthen them. Residents in the experimental group developed their self-confidence in boot camp, and it increased after repetitive practice.

Abstract Empathy enhancement programs and mindfulness-based practices may reduce care practitioners’ burnout and stress while increasing satisfaction, caring efficacy, and well-being. No study has been conducted to measure the effectiveness of a simulation-based empathy enhancement program combined with mindfulness practice on professionals working with older adults living alone. This study, therefore, assessed the effectiveness of a simulation-based empathy enhancement program with a brief mindfulness practice session on social workers working with older adults living alone. This study was a quasi-experimental study involving 105 social workers in South Korea. The experimental group received a simulation-based empathy enhancement program with mindfulness practice, and the attention control group watched a 30-minute-long educational video about empathy. Data were collected prior to the intervention and at two weeks after the intervention using self-reported questionnaires measuring empathy, caring efficacy, psychosocial stress, compassion satisfaction, burnout, and secondary traumatic stress. The experimental group had significantly lower levels of psychosocial stress compared to the attention control group. Both groups showed significant improvements in empathy but in different empathy measures. Also, the experimental group only showed significantly lower levels of burnout and secondary traumatic stress after the intervention while the attention control group only showed significant improvements in compassion satisfaction and caring efficacy. Although between-group differences were found in psychosocial stress only, pre-and post-test differences in different outcome measures from experimental and attention control groups indicate limited but possible effectiveness of each of the empathy enhancement programs on people in caring professionals.

Abstract Empathy of the caregiver can influence both the caregiver’s performance and the receiver’s enhanced life. The aim of this study is to examine whether Simulation-based Empathy Enhancement program for the Carer of the Elderly (SEE-C) is effective in increasing care receivers’ session satisfaction and positive emotional change. We developed SEE-C by modifying the Dementia Live(TM) program and adding with a brief mindfulness. The effect on counselling was assessed using the Session Evaluation Questionnaire (SEQ), which is self-report tool asking the client about their experience with the session just ended. A total of 100 older adults living alone were interviewed by caregivers who experienced SEE-C (n=12) and by non-experienced (n=12). Participants in this study were randomly assigned to each of the two caregiver groups, and were interviewed about demographics, health and emotional status, and lifestyle using the same protocols. Analysis of covariance was conducted, controlling variables of age of subjects and caregivers’ months of career, which were found to differ significantly between the two groups. Among the four subcategories of SEQ, the experimental group reported significantly higher scores than the control group in three subcategories of session-depth (F(1, 96)=9.647, P=.002), session-smoothness (F(1, 96)=13.699, p&lt;.001), emotion-positive (F(1, 96)=18.056, p&lt;.001), with the exception of emotion-alertness (F(1, 96)=0.366, p=.546). These results suggest that SEE-C could have a positive impact on interviewing the elderly in terms of improving the capacity of the interviewer and raising the satisfaction of the interviewee.

To achieve desired goals in the first aid training, we can use different learning methods. We can choose simulation, which represents one of the active forms of learning. Within the simulations, we can select simulated scenarios to bring more reality into the learning process. With our research we wanted to evaluate the effectiveness of scenario-based first aid training. We included 65 students of Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Ljubljana. The experimental group was unlike the control group exposed to scenario-based learning during one-week first aid training. We collected the data with a questionnaire and evaluation paper, which enabled us to assess the students during the practical test. Our research has shown that pre-training with simulated scenarios improves provided first aid in case of a simulated accident. Keywords: scenarios; teaching; active learning; first aid

We aimed to evaluate the short-term effects of community-based occupational therapy on health-related quality of life and engagement in meaningful activities among women with breast cancer. An open label randomized controlled trial study design was applied. The participants were members of various societies of women with cancer. In total, 22 women have participated in the study. Participants of the experimental group (n=11) participated in a 6-week community-based occupational therapy program and the usual activities of various societies, whereas the control group (n=11) women participated in the usual activities of the societies only. 1 of the participants withdrew during the course; therefore 21 completed the study successfully. Participants of both groups were assessed for health-related quality of life and the participants of the experimental group were assessed for engagement in meaningful activities. The evaluation was carried out during the nonacute period of the disease—at the beginning of the study and after 6 weeks. Women of the experimental group demonstrated statistically significantly better scores in the global quality of life, role functions, physical, emotional, cognitive, and social functions, fatigue, insomnia, financial impact, systemic therapy side effects, and breast symptoms scales compared to the control group participants (p<0.05) after the 6 weeks, as measured by the EORTC QLQ-C30 questionnaire and its breast cancer module QLQ-BR23. Furthermore, women of the experimental group demonstrated significant greater engagement in meaningful activities when applying community-based occupational therapy (p<0.05), as measured by using the Engagement in Meaningful Activities Survey (EMAS). The evaluation of the associations between the women’s engagement in meaningful activities and changes in health-related quality of life showed that greater engagement in meaningful activities was associated with better emotional functions and a lower level of insomnia (p<0.05). Based on the results of our study, we recommend applying occupational therapy in the field of community healthcare in order to maintain or improve breast cancer patients’ health-related quality of life and suggest involving women into meaningful activities during community-based occupational therapy after clarifying which activities are important to them.

Background Part task training (PTT) focuses on dividing complex tasks into components followed by intensive concentrated training on individual components. Variable priority training (VPT) focuses on optimal distribution of attention when performing multiple tasks simultaneously with the goal of flexible allocation of attention. This study explored how principles of PTT and VPT adapted to anesthesia training would improve first-year anesthesiology residents' management of simulated adverse airway and respiratory events. The authors hypothesized that participants with PTT and VPT would perform better than those with standard training. Methods Twenty-two first-year anesthesia residents were randomly divided into two groups and trained over 12 months. The control group received standard didactic and simulation-based training. The experimental group received similar training but with emphasis on PTT and VPT techniques. Participant ability to manage seven adverse airway and respiratory events were assessed before and after the training period. Performance was measured by the number of correct tasks, making a correct diagnosis, assessment of perceived workload, and an assessment of scenario comprehension. Results Participants in both groups exhibited significant improvement in all metrics after a year of training. Participants in the experimental group were able to complete more tasks and answered more comprehension questions correctly. There was no difference in perceived workload or the number of correct diagnoses between groups. Conclusion This study in part confirmed the study hypotheses. The results suggest that VPT and PTT are promising adjuncts to didactic and simulation-based training for management of adverse airway and respiratory events.

Abstract Background: In view of the harsh reality Chinese paediatricians face, the challenge of paediatric education is about instilling not only knowledge and clinical skills but also resilience and beliefs. The aim of the study is to explore a more effective method than the traditional lecture-based learning (LBL) model for optimizing educational outcomes by establishing an innovative, comprehensive, case-based learning (CBL) model combined with the micro-film technique (MF+CBL). This approach has four important components: interests (attraction), knowledge application, competency, and scenario coping skills.Methods: Experimental research was conducted via a controlled parallel group study. The total sample of 104 senior-year students (Chinese) majoring in clinical medicine was randomly divided into two groups. The experimental group was exposed to the MF+CBL model and the control group to the LBL model. Overall, the results were assessed after an 8-week course via a student self-assessment questionnaire, a satisfaction survey and the final examination.Results: The experimental group generally performed better than the control group on the student self-assessment (P<0.05), satisfaction survey (P<0.05), and final examination (80.02±3.77 vs 73.65±3.69, P = 0.000). The open question at the end of the questionnaire revealed that a small number of students did not favour the MF+CBL model due to its time- and energy-consuming features.Conclusions: Compared with LBL, the MF+CBL model was an innovative teaching method that promoted more comprehensive quality development. It represents an alternative model for optimizing the capacity of future paediatric doctors.

Abstract Background:Clinical education is an essential part of nursing education. Selected clinical teaching methods influence it. Simulation-based mastery learning has been used to improve clinical skills among nursing students and may provide a novel way to enhance nursing skills.The object of this study was to assessthe effect of the simulation-based mastery learning on the clinicalskills of undergraduate nursing students from 2017 till 2019.Methods:This study was a quasi-experimental study withtwo groups (the control and intervention).After receiving written consent, one 117 studentsselected random convenience sampling. The intervention group participated in a simulation-based mastery learning intervention, and the control group received no intervention except for traditional training.The students of both groups completed the demographic information questionnaire and the checklist before and after the intervention. The results were analyzed by SPSS version 21 using descriptive and inferential statistics.Results:The results showed that there were no significant differences between the two groups before the intervention (p> o.o5). Also, that students’ performance in the intervention group and control group improved significantly at the post-test compared to baseline(p<0.05), implying that the simulation-based mastery model of the intervention group significantly more effective compared to that of the control.Conclusion: Thesefindings showed that mastery learning strategy improved the clinical skills ofundergraduatenursing students.The results suggest that other nursing and health profession’s programs can develop a successful mastery-based learning model.

A stroke is a condition that can give rise to consequences such as cognitive and physical constraints, which sometimes manifest in the psychological condition of the patient. Such patients commence rehabilitation as soon as is possible, which involves a multi-disciplinary approach to treatment. One aspect of complementary rehabilitation could be animal-assisted therapy (AAT). A total of 15 individuals were split into an experimental group comprising 6 patients (2 males, 4 females), and a control group of 9 patients (3 males, 6 females). The participants in the control group were aged from 43 to 87 years and the experimental group featured participants aged from 45 to 76 years. Both groups received standard physiotherapy and occupational therapy. In addition, the experimental group was supplemented with AAT, with the animal in question being a dog. The tools primarily applied to measure the outcomes were the Barthel index, blood pressure, and heart rate measurements, whereas the Likert scale was employed to discern the mood of the patients. The results showed that changes in the values for heart rate and blood pressure were insignificant. However, a statistically significant aspect of the research pertained to the patients confirming that they felt better after the AAT sessions. Hence, AAT could potentially bolster the effectiveness of other therapies.
