Three-dimensional plant model visualization (3D-PMV) is based on plant biology and the plant structure construction model for virtual simulation three-dimensional display, reflecting plant structure characteristics and demonstrating the growth process. In this work, we used the method of systematic mapping study (SMS) to screen the relevant literature in order to explore and analyze the methods and goals of virtual plant visualization research and to provide assistance in future literature reviews. To this end, we conducted extensive searches to identify articles related to plant model visualization technology. We searched for papers from July 2010 to November 2020 from four mainstream databases, namely, ACM, IEEE Xplore, EI, and Web of Science, and found more than 2,900 papers on 3D-PMV. Finally, we selected 60 qualified papers. We mainly followed the SMS method to classify papers by answering seven questions, mainly extracting data for analysis on research types, research goals, model construction methods, visual model categories, number of publications, tools, and methods. The results show that solution proposals account for the largest proportion of research types, accounting for 75% of the total number of papers. This shows that the focus is on the improvement of original methods or the proposal of new methods in this field; research goals of research plant phenotypic characteristics account for the total 35%; 28% of the research objectives focus on showing the reflection of plant growth process, indicating that the research objective trends in this research field regard plant phenotypic characteristics and visualization of the growth process; static type model visualization also accounts for 83% of the total, indicating that the related research on visualization in this field is mostly static typing. Therefore, our work not only analyzes the challenges faced by 3D-PVM and the research directions that need more attention in the future but also provides some suggestions for researchers to find suitable research directions in this field. As the future direction of development, researchers need to pay more attention to the study of dynamic visualization methods of plant growth. We believe that for future research, it is indispensable to provide 3D-PMV with research methods, research goals, visualization model types, development, and other tools. This article analyzes the results of the extracted data based on the SMS method and makes an important contribution to the researcher's extensive understanding of the current status of 3D-PMV and the potential future research opportunities in the field.

The theory of cartographic projections is a tool which can present the convex surface of the Earth on the plane. Of the many types of maps, thematic maps perform an important function due to the wide possibilities of adapting their content to current needs. The limitation of classic maps is their two-dimensional nature. In the era of rapidly growing methods of mass acquisition of spatial data, the use of flat images is often not enough to reveal the level of complexity of certain objects. In this case, it is necessary to use visualization in three-dimensional space. The motivation to conduct the study was the use of cartographic projections methods, spatial transformations, and the possibilities offered by thematic maps to create thematic three-dimensional map imaging (T3DMI). The authors presented a practical verification of the adopted methodology to create a T3DMI visualization of the marina of the National Sailing Centre of the Gdańsk University of Physical Education and Sport (Poland). The profiled characteristics of the object were used to emphasize the key elements of its function. The results confirmed the increase in the interpretative capabilities of the T3DMI method, relative to classic two-dimensional maps. Additionally, the study suggested future research directions of the presented solution.

Abstract Background Numerous studies have examined the association between safety and primary school-aged children’s forms of active mobility. However, variations in studies’ measurement methods and the elements addressed have contributed to inconsistencies in research outcomes, which may be forming a barrier to advancing researchers’ knowledge about this field. To assess where current research stands, we have synthesised the methodological measures in studies that examined the effects of neighbourhood safety exposure (perceived and measured) on children’s outdoor active mobility behaviour and used this analysis to propose future research directions. Method A systematic search of the literature in six electronic databases was conducted using pre-defined eligibility criteria and was concluded in July 2020. Two reviewers screened the literature abstracts to determine the studies’ inclusion, and two reviewers independently conducted a methodological quality assessment to rate the included studies. Results Twenty-five peer-reviewed studies met the inclusion criteria. Active mobility behaviour and health characteristics were measured objectively in 12 out of the 25 studies and were reported in another 13 studies. Twenty-one studies overlooked spatiotemporal dimensions in their analyses and outputs. Delineations of children’s neighbourhoods varied within 10 studies’ objective measures, and the 15 studies that opted for subjective measures. Safety perceptions obtained in 22 studies were mostly static and primarily collected via parents, and dissimilarities in actual safety measurement methods were present in 6 studies. The identified schematic constraints in studies’ measurement methods assisted in outlining a three-dimensional relationship between ‘what’ (determinants), ‘where’ (spatial) and ‘when’ (time) within a methodological conceptual framework. Conclusions The absence of standardised measurement methods among relevant studies may have led to the current diversity in findings regarding active mobility, spatial (locality) and temporal (time) characteristics, the neighbourhood, and the representation of safety. Ignorance of the existing gaps and heterogeneity in measures may impact the reliability of evidence and poses a limitation when synthesising findings, which could result in serious biases for policymakers. Given the increasing interest in children’s health studies, we suggested alternatives in the design and method of measures that may guide future evidence-based research for policymakers who aim to improve children’s active mobility and safety.

Learning Analytics (LA) is a field that aims to optimize learning through the study of dynamical processes occurring in the students' context. It covers the measurement, collection, analysis and reporting of data about students and their contexts. This study aims at surveying existing research on LA to identify approaches, topics, and needs for future research. A systematic mapping study is launched to find as much literature as possible. The 127 papers found (resulting in 116 works) are classified with respect to goals, data types, techniques, stakeholders and interventions. Despite the increasing interest in field, there are no studies relating it to the Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) context. The goal of this paper is twofold, first we present the systematic mapping on LA and after we analyze its findings in the MOOCs context. As results we provide an overview of LA and identify perspectives and challenges in the MOOCs context.

The domain of Cloud and Service-oriented requirements engineering (SORE) focuses on modelling, specifying, and analysing requirements to enable software development in a service-oriented manner. Even though Cloud and SORE has received increasing attention over the past decade, there is no clear view of the current state of knowledge. Our goal is to gain insights into the current status of Cloud and SORE research published to date. To this end, we conducted a systematic mapping study to develop a map to classify relevant literature published between 2007 and 2018. Out of the 326 studies that were examined, we selected 24 studies as primary studies. The resulting map provides an overview of the existing work on Cloud and SORE and makes it possible to identify gaps and plan and position future research. Our findings suggest that Cloud and SORE as a research context needs specific attention. More evaluation and validation research is needed to better understand the implementation and impact of the various solutions (e.g. frameworks, tools) that are proposed in the Cloud and SORE context.

The main object of this study is to systematically review existing research on energy efficiency of embedded systems in order to identify investigated aspects and needs for future research. We have conducted a systematic mapping study of the state-of-the-art on energy efficiency of embedded systems. 186 papers have been identified as primary studies from year 1994 to 2011 and classified by research focus, research type, and contribution type. 71% of the research papers are solutions proposals; power estimation is the most investigated aspect in terms of research focus (34%) and majority of the studies contributed in terms of methods.

Energy management for energy harvesting-based embedded systems (EHES) is an emerging field, which aims to collect renewable energy from the environment to power an embedded system. In this work, we use the systematic mapping method to study the relevant literature, with the objective of exploring and analysing the state of the art in energy management for EHES, as well as to provide assistance for subsequent literature reviews. To this end, we conducted extensive searches to find articles related to energy harvesting, embedded systems, energy consumption, and energy management. We searched for papers from January 2005 to July 2019 from three mainstream databases, ACM, IEEE Xplore, and Web of Science, and found more than 3000 papers about EHES. Finally, we selected 142 eligible papers. We have completed the system mapping research from five aspects, namely, (1) research type (validation research, evaluation research, solution proposal, philosophical paper, opinion, and experience), (2) research goals (application or theory), (3) application scenarios, (4) tools or methods, and (5) paper distribution, such as publication year and authors’ nationality. The results showed that the major research type of the EHES papers is validation research, accounting for 65%, which indicated research is still in the theoretical stage and many researchers focus on how to improve the efficiency of harvesting energy, develop a reasonable energy supply plan, and adapt EHES for real-world requirements. Furthermore, this work reviews the tools used for EHES. As the future development direction, it is indispensable to provide tools to EHES for research, testing, development, and so on. The results of our analysis provide significant contributions to understanding the existing knowledge and highlighting potential future research opportunities in the EHES field.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to organize and analyze the existing literature on co-creation in tourism to identify the state-of-the-art studies and the research gap in this field. Design/methodology/approach As the research questions seek to provide an overview of the studies in the available literature, the systematic mapping study (SMS) has been selected as the research method. A suitable mapping study method for analyzing and structuring a broad research field concerning methods, designs and research focuses on the existing publications. In total, 137 articles published during 2006–2019 in reliable academic databases such as Science Direct, Emerald, Scopus, Wiley, ProQuest, Sage, Web of Science and Taylor and Francis were selected and analyzed. Findings The results show a rising trend of published articles in tourism, with the maximum number published in 2019 and the minimum number in 2006. Also, analysis of input articles revealed that most of the studies focused on the antecedents and prerequisites for co-creation and paid less attention to the co-creation context. Other findings show that in the field of tourism, the hospitality sector, especially hotels have paid special attention to co-creation. The majority of papers were the empirical type with quantitative design. Furthermore, most studies used the survey method, while the case study and other methods were the next choices. Originality/value This study addresses a major research gap by summarizing the literature related to value co-creation with a specific focus on tourism using the SMS method that provides an overview of the studies in this field. Categorizing papers through SMS helps researchers to review the status of studies in a visual summary to identify gaps and directions for future research.

Despite the benefits of adopting IT Service Management (ITSM) reference models, such initiatives do not always produce the expected results. The research literature in this area concludes that motivation, engagement, skills, experience, performance and willingness to change of the personnel involved are among the critical factors for an effective ITSM implementation. Gamification has the capability to improve people’s motivation and engagement and to drive people’s behavior to meet the objectives set. Besides, gamification is widely used in learning systems for increasing students’ skills and competences. In the last years, many researchers have added gamification to their process improvement initiatives to increase the motivation and engagement of process participants and to address their behavior throughout the process. Thus, we consider that adopting gamification in ITSM processes can be an interesting area of study. In this paper, we conducted a systematic mapping study to analyze the actual state of research in the field of ITSM gamification and identify the key challenges that justify future research. The results of our study highlight the positive impact of adopting gamification in ITSM processes and that ITSM gamification is a novel an attractive research area with many action possibilities.

The Q-method has been utilized over time in various areas, including information systems. In this study, we used a systematic mapping to illustrate how the Q-method was applied within Information Systems (IS) community and proposing towards integration of Q-method into the Design Sciences Research (DSR) process as a tool for future research DSR-based IS studies. In this mapping study, we collected peer-reviewed journals from Basket-of-Eight journals and the digital library of the Association for Information Systems (AIS). Then we grouped the publications according to the process of DSR, and different variables for preparing Q-method from IS publications. We found that the potential of the Q-methodology can be used to support each main research stage of DSR processes and can serve as the useful tool to evaluate a system in the IS topic of system analysis and design.
