The synchronization of states is important to sustain the energy of consumers at any given time for power networks. This paper focuses on the multi-area power network model and then analyzes the cluster synchronization of this kind of network comprised of a third-order chaotic power system. Specifically, we investigate the rich dynamic properties of the single third-order power system. Furthermore, the multi-area network model with the chaotic power system is proposed and the adaptive controller is designed to achieve cluster synchronization. Combining analytical considerations with numerical simulations on a small-scale network, we address the cluster synchronous performance in the multi-area power network. Therefore, our results can provide a basic physical picture for power system dynamics and enable us to further understand the complex dynamical behavior in the multi-area power network.

For marine engineer training, marine power system analysis and fault diagnoses, a marine power system simulator (MPSS) is proposed here. It has been developed by applying system simulation techniques. The main techniques employed were marine power system modeling, microcomputer control, and local area network communication. Some functions and typical fault simulations produced with the MPSS are introduced. These operations are particularly useful for marine engineer training. A marine power system model is built by applying the power system dynamic stability theory. The power system model is the most important element in the simulator. The system model is made of a diesel engine generator, induction motor, power network, and so on. Many simulation results were obtained, such as starting the lubricating oil pump and a power network three-phase ground fault. Because the system offers online control, local area network communication, and human-machine interface of information, this MPSS is used extensively in marine engineer training where the standard is professional skill in marine electrical technology. The system has been used to meet the standards of the STCW78/95 international convention in many marine companies and training centers in China with good results.

AbstractSmall-scale commercial rollouts of Cellular-IoT (C-IoT) networks have started globally since last year. However, among the plethora of low power wide area network (LPWAN) technologies, the cost-effectiveness of C-IoT is not certain for IoT service providers, small and greenfield operators. Today, there is no known public framework for the feasibility analysis of IoT communication technologies. Hence, this paper first presents a generic framework to assess the cost structure of cellular and non-cellular LPWAN technologies. Then, we applied the framework in eight deployment scenarios to analyze the prospect of LPWAN technologies like Sigfox, LoRaWAN, NB-IoT, LTE-M, and EC-GSM. We consider the inter-technology interference impact on LoRaWAN and Sigfox scalability. Our results validate that a large rollout with a single technology is not cost-efficient. Also, our analysis suggests the rollout possibility of an IoT communication Technology may not be linear to cost-efficiency.

AbstractIn this paper, we are concerned with a delayed smoking model in which the population is divided into five classes. Sufficient conditions guaranteeing the local stability and existence of Hopf bifurcation for the model are established by taking the time delay as a bifurcation parameter and employing the Routh–Hurwitz criteria. Furthermore, direction and stability of the Hopf bifurcation are investigated by applying the center manifold theorem and normal form theory. Finally, computer simulations are implemented to support the analytic results and to analyze the effects of some parameters on the dynamical behavior of the model.

A four-dimensional neural network model with delay is investigated. With the help of the theory of delay differential equation and Hopf bifurcation, the conditions of the equilibrium undergoing Hopf bifurcation are worked out by choosing the delay as parameter. Applying the normal form theory and the center manifold argument, we derive the explicit formulae for determining the properties of the bifurcating periodic solutions. Numerical simulations are performed to illustrate the analytical results.

This article presents the development of a platform for real-time monitoring of multi-microgrids. A small-scale platform has been developed and implemented as a prototype, which takes data from various types of devices located at a distance from each other. The monitoring platform is interoperable, as it allows several protocols to coexist. While the developed prototype is tested on small-scale distributed energy resources (DERs), it is done in a way to extend the concept for monitoring several microgrids in real scales. Monitoring strategies were developed for DERs by making a customized two-way communication channel between the microgrids and the monitoring center using a long-range bridged wireless local area network (WLAN). In addition, an informative and easy-to-use software dashboard was developed. The dashboard shows real-time information and measurements from the DERs—providing the user with a holistic view of the status of the DERs. The proposed system is scalable, modular, facilitates the interoperability of various types of inverters, and communicates data over a secure communication channel. All these features along with its relatively low cost make the developed real-time monitoring platform very useful for online monitoring of smart microgrids.

Through the summary of typical accident, the problem between the over speed protection device of thermal power unit steam turbine and over frequency generator tripping measure is analyzed in island operation of sending ends of regional grid. The optimizing allocation principle between over frequency generator tripping measure and over speed protection equipment is put forward. By a variety of program analysis and comparison, the optimizing scheme is given. Finally, the typical models of thermal power unit steam turbine over speed protection are established in software. Based on a practical power system as an example, the whole process of islanding is simulated. Checking the coordination with existing over frequency generator tripping measure and the relay setting related to power network in the islanding operation, the validity and practicability of the optimal scheme and principle are analyzed. With the method, the regional grid will remain safe and stable.

AbstractBrain Network Models have become a promising theoretical framework in simulating signals that are representative of whole brain activity such as resting state fMRI. However, it has been difficult to compare the complex brain activity between simulated and empirical data. Previous studies have used simple metrics that surmise coordination between regions such as functional connectivity, and we extend on this by using various different dynamical analysis tools that are currently used to understand resting state fMRI. We show that certain properties correspond to the structural connectivity input that is shared between the models, and certain dynamic properties relate more to the mathematical description of the Brain Network Model. We conclude that the dynamic properties that gauge more temporal structure rather than spatial coordination in the rs-fMRI signal seem to provide the largest contrasts between different BNMs and the unknown empirical dynamical system. Our results will be useful in constraining and developing more realistic simulations of whole brain activity.
