The Chongqing metro line 6 underpass expressway around the city is taken as an engineering background, and the optimal excavation sequence and corresponding control countermeasures for the triangular-distributed three-line metro tunnel underpass expressway are studied. The influences of excavation sequence on the tunnel surrounding rock deformation, surrounding rock stress, supporting structure stress, plastic zone, and surface settlement are analyzed by using MIDAS/GTS NX finite element software. The numerical simulation results showed that Case 1 is the optimal excavation sequence of the metro tunnel. However, the surface settlement under the optimal excavation sequence exceeds the limit value of 30 mm, which cannot guarantee the safety of expressway traffic. On this basis, the control measure for strengthening the three-line tunnels with advanced small pipe grouting and reinforcing the middle tunnel with concrete-filled steel tube piles are proposed. Moreover, the excavation process of the metro tunnel with and without reinforcement schemes is numerically simulated. The results show that the reinforcement scheme can effectively control the surface settlement value within the limited value (16.47 mm), which is close to the maximum surface settlement of 18.31 mm after the metro tunnel excavation is completed, indicating that the proposed reinforcement scheme is beneficial to ensure the safety of metro tunnel construction and the driving safety of the expressway.

Abstract In this study, elastoplastic model for the surrounding rock of axisymmetric circular tunnel is investigated under three-dimensional (3D) principal stress states. Novel numerical solutions for strain-softening surrounding rock were first proposed based on the modified 3D Hoek–Brown criterion and the associated flow rule. Under a 3D axisymmetric coordinate system, the distributions for stresses and displacement can be effectively determined on the basis of the redeveloped stress increment approach. The modified 3D Hoek–Brown strength criterion is also embedded into finite element software to characterize the yielding state of surrounding rock based on the modified yield surface and stress renewal algorithm. The Euler implicit constitutive integral algorithm and the consistent tangent stiffness matrix are reconstructed in terms of the 3D Hoek–Brown strength criterion. Therefore, the numerical solutions and finite element method (FEM) models for the deep buried tunnel under 3D principal stress condition are presented, so that the stability analysis of surrounding rock can be conducted in a direct and convenient way. The reliability of the proposed solutions was verified by comparison of the principal stresses obtained by the developed numerical approach and FEM model. From a practical point of view, the proposed approach can also be applied for the determination of ground response curve of the tunnel, which shows a satisfying accuracy compared with the measuring data.

Taking a deep-mine horizontal roadway in inclined strata as our research object, the true triaxial simulation technique was used to establish a model of the inclined strata and carry out high-stress triaxial loading experiments. The experimental results show that the deformation of surrounding rock in the roadway presents heterogeneous deformation characteristics in time and space: the deformation of the surrounding rock at different positions of the roadway occurs at different times. In the process of deformation of the surrounding rock, deformation and failure occur at the floor of the roadway first, followed by the lower shoulder-angle of the roadway, and finally the rest of the roadway. The deformation amount in the various areas is different. The floor heave deformation of the roadway floor is the greatest and shows obvious left-right asymmetry. The deformation of the higher side is greater than that of the lower side. The model disassembly shows that the development of cracks in the surrounding rock is characterized by more cracks on the higher side and fewer cracks on the lower side but shows larger cracks across the width. The experimental results of high-stress deformation of the surrounding rock are helpful in the design of supports, the reinforcement scheme, and the parameter optimization of roadways in high-stress-inclined rock, and to improve the stability control of deep high-stress roadways.

Abstract Concrete-filled thin-walled steel tubular slender columns are studied in this paper to evaluate their stiffness. The slender columns have various steel tube thicknesses, length/diameter (width) ratios, and concrete compressive strengths. The columns are loaded by axial and eccentric loads. Two experimental tests of the slender and stub columns are described. Also, the finite element software ABAQUS is utilised to simulate and analyse the columns. The tested columns are simulated taking into account all their features in the tests to verify the simulation of the columns. The simulation results are compared with the tests results which reveal that good agreements exist between them. Thus, the proposed simulation method of the columns is verified. In order to assess the stiffness of the columns under different conditions, various load eccentricities (0 mm, 25 mm, and 50 mm), cross-sectional configurations (circular, rectangular, and square), and steel tube thicknesses (2 mm, 3.35 mm, and 5 mm) are adopted for the developed columns. The columns are simulated and analysed based on the verified simulation method considering the mentioned conditions. As a conclusion, the stiffness of the columns is generally reduced by the increase of the load eccentricity from 0 mm to 25 mm and 50 mm. Further, more uniform distribution of the stiffness is witnessed for the columns with lower eccentricities. In addition, the enhancement of the load eccentricity increased the reduction slope of the stiffness graph for the columns. Although the initial stiffness of the circular column is slightly lower than the rectangular and square columns, the stiffness has more uniform distribution which is preferred. Larger stiffness is achieved for the columns by increasing the steel tube thickness from 2 mm to 3.35 mm and 5 mm.

In this paper, the mechanical behaviors of pipe roof and bolt of shallow and unsymmetrical tunnel in soft rock are analyzed. Through the finite element software Phase2.0, combined with the geological conditions that construction site often appear, the mechanical behaviors of pipe roof and bolt and surrounding rock in the process of horseshoe highway tunnel construction in the condition that surface is soft rock and underground for the bedrock are analyzed. Research results show that: after tunnel excavation in soft rock, surrounding rock near the tunnel is easy to suffer soft-rock large deformation even failure, which needs to timely support;Due to the impact of the unsymmetrical tunnel, the mechanical behaviors of surrounding rock are unsymmetrical, such as the maximum displacement of tunnel around 0.4 m distant from apex of arch ring, the stress is asymmetrical on both sides of the tunnel arch ring etc; In addition, pipe roof can effectively prevent from the displacement of soft rock strata, improve tunnel strength factor, reduce the plastic zone of surrounding rock. This paper provides theoretical basis for the design of pipe roof and bolt.

The 347 stainless steel tube cold rolling test was carried out by a LG60 two-roll pilger mill. The microstructure evolution was examined by microscope, SEM, and XRD tests. The finite element software DEFORM-3D has been used to simulate the pilgering process, and the obtained equivalent stress and metal flow were analyzed. The experimental results showed that the internal slip line was randomly distributed, the deformation of the inner wall was more intense than the outer wall structure, and the austenite γ phase was transformed into the α′-martensitic phase. The simulation results indicated that the direction of metal flow was constantly changing, and the equivalent stress of the inner wall of the steel tube was greater than the equivalent stress of the outer wall. In addition, the slip zone of the inner wall of the characteristic section was more severe than that near the outer wall slip zone. The simulation verified the experimental results to some extent.

In order to study the supporting of deep surrounding rock with zonal disintegration tendency, the zonal disintegration phenomenon of deep surrounding rock under three supporting forms is analyzed by the ABAQUS finite element software in this paper, and three supporting forms are un-supporting, bolting and grouting, and combined “Bolting and grouting plus Anchor rope” supporting. The results show that the different effects to zonal disintegration under different supporting forms will occur. Supporting can help to restrain the zonal disintegration of the reinforcement part advantageously, and also lower rupture degree of zonal disintegration and reduce the size of rupture zone. Meanwhile, the stability of surrounding rock is improved. But zonal disintegration may occur outside reinforcement part under greater ground stress. The results are great importance to a better understanding of the deep roadway supporting.

This study investigated the axial compressive performance of six thin-walled concrete-filled steel tube (CFST) square column specimens with steel bar stiffeners and two non-stiffened specimens at constant temperatures of 20 °C, 100 °C, 200 °C, 400 °C, 600 °C and 800 °C. The mechanical properties of the specimens at different temperatures were analyzed in terms of the ultimate bearing capacity, failure mode, and load–displacement curve. The experiment results show that at high temperature, even though the mechanical properties of the specimens declined, leading to a decrease of the ultimate bearing capacity, the ductility and deformation capacity of the specimens improved inversely. Based on finite element software ABAQUS, numerical models were developed to calculate both temperature and mechanical fields, the results of which were in good agreement with experimental results. Then, the stress mechanism of eight specimens was analyzed using established numerical models. The analysis results show that with the increase of temperature, the longitudinal stress gradient of the concrete in the specimen column increases while the stress value decreases. The lateral restraint of the stiffeners is capable of restraining the steel outer buckling and enhancing the restraint effect on the concrete.
