Objectives. This study assessed the shear bond strength (SBS) of four types of orthodontic retainers after thermocycling and cyclic loading. Materials and Methods. This in vitro, experimental study evaluated 120 extracted mandibular central and lateral incisors. The teeth were mounted in acrylic resin blocks in sets of three, such that the interdental contacts and positioning of the teeth resembled the dental arch. The acrylic blocks were divided into four groups (n = 10) for the use of 0.016 × 0.022-inch Bond-A-Braid® wire, 0.0195-inch twisted wire, 0.0175-inch coaxial wire, and 0.038 × 0.016-inch Ortho-Flex Tech® wire, as retainers. The retainers were bonded to the lingual surface of the teeth with Transbond XT adhesive in all groups, and the specimens underwent thermocycling and cyclic loading (125,000 load cycles applied to the incisal edge of the incisor tooth in the middle, simulating 6 months of clinical service). Any fracture in the process of aging was recorded. The teeth were then subjected to vertical loads applied along their occlusoapical axis in a universal testing machine to determine the SBS in Newtons. The adhesive remnant index (ARI) scores were also determined. Data were analyzed using ANOVA, the Monte Carlo chi-square test, and the Kruskal–Wallis test. Results. Thermocycling and cyclic loading did not cause degradation or fracture of the retainers. The SBS and ARI scores of the four groups were not significantly different ( P > 0.05 ). Conclusion. The SBS of retainers with flat rectangular-shaped cross-section was similar to that of retainers with a round cross-section; thus, they have no superiority over each other in this respect.

Objectives: In clinical conditions, orthodontic brackets are exposed to periodic stresses mainly induced by mastication and intraoral forces. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effects of cyclic loading to simulate masticatory forces on shear bond strength (SBS) of metal brackets bonded to teeth using self-etch and total-etch bonding systems. Materials and Methods: Eighty-four caries- and crack-free bovine mandibular incisors were selected and randomly assigned to two groups based on the type of bonding system. After bonding, all samples were thermocycled (500 cycles) followed by cyclic loading of the half of the specimens in each group by applying 40 N load with 2 Hz frequency for 10,000 cycles. The SBS was measured using a universal testing machine. The adhesive remnant index (ARI) score was calculated subsequently. Data were analyzed using Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, two-way ANOVA and Mann-Whitney test. Results: The SBS was 10.09±3.78 MPa and 14.44±6.06 MPa for self-etch and total-etch bonding systems in cyclic loading group, respectively. The SBS was 9.43±5.3 MPa and 11.31±5.42 MPa in self-etch and total-etch groups without cyclic loading, respectively. Cyclic loading did not cause any significant difference in SBS (P>0.05). The ARI scores of the groups were significantly different (P<0.05). Conclusions: The present results demonstrated that low masticatory forces at 10,000 cycles did not have a significant impact on bracket-adhesive SBS; however, they significantly changed the ARI score. Even though the total-etch bonding system yielded higher SBS than the self-etch system, the performance of both was clinically acceptable.

Introduction: Bond strength is an important property and determines the amount of force delivered and treatment duration in orthodontics. Many light-cured bonding materials are being used; but it is required to determine the most efficient one withdesired bond strength. Objective: To determine and compare the shear bond strength of three visible light-cured composites (Transbond XT, Heliositand Enlight) and two self-cured composites (Rely-a-bond and Concise). Materials & Method: 100 extracted premolars were collected and randomly divided into 5 test groups of different adhesives. Brackets were bonded to the teeth in each test group with the respective adhesive according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Each specimen was debonded using Universal Testing Machine and the shear bond strength for each specimen was calculated. All the groups were compared by ANOVA one-way test. Results: There were statistically significant differences among the five groups (P<0.05). The shear bond strength of Enlight (13.92 ± 3.92) is similar to Transbond XT (14.30 ± 4.35). Conclusion: Light cure composites showed higher bond strength than self cure composites.

Aim. This study aimed to assess shear bond strength (SBS) of resin cement to zirconia ceramic with different surface treatments by using Single Bond Universal. Methods. In this in vitro study, 50 zirconia discs (2 × 6 mm) were divided into 5 groups of (I) sandblasting with silica-coated alumina (CoJet)  + silane + Single Bond 2, (II) sandblasting with CoJet + Single Bond Universal, (III) sandblasting with alumina + Single Bond Universal, (IV) sandblasting with alumina + Z-Prime Plus, and (V) Single Bond Universal with no surface treatment. Resin cement was applied in plastic tubes (3 × 5 mm2), and after 10,000 thermal cycles, the SBS was measured by a universal testing machine. The mode of failure was determined under a stereomicroscope at × 40 magnification. Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA. Results. The maximum (6.56 ± 4.29 MPa) and minimum (1.94 ± 1.96 MPa) SBS values were noted in groups III and I, respectively. Group III had the highest frequency of mixed failure (60%). Group V had the maximum frequency of adhesive failure (100%). Conclusion. Single Bond Universal + sandblasting with alumina or silica-coated alumina particles is an acceptable method to provide a strong SBS between resin cement and zirconia.

Background:Dentin bonding is an ever-evolving field in adhesive dentistry. With the introduction of newer systems into the market, there is a crucial need to test their efficiency in terms of bond strength. Dual-cured adhesives in theory may provide for a better degree of conversion as compared to conventional light-cured adhesives .Thus, the aim of this study was to compare the shear bond strength of three different self-etch adhesives namely ClearfilSE bond (Kuraray), Tetric N Bond Universal (IvoclarVivadent) and Futura Bond DC (Voco) to dentin. Materials & Methods: Ninety extracted non-carious, intact human mandibular molar teeth were selected for this study. Each tooth was decoronated using a double-sided diamond disc with water coolant to a depth of 2mm from the cusp tip .The cut dentin surface was then abraded against 600-grit wet silicon carbide papers for 60 seconds to produce a uniform smear layer. The root portion of each tooth was mounted on a plastic ring using cold cure acrylic resin. Specimens were then divided into three adhesive groups of 30 teeth each, Group A: ClearfilSE Bond (Kuraray), Group B: Tetric N Bond Universal (IvoclarVivadent), Group C :Futura Bond DC (Voco). All bonding agents were used according to the manufacturers’ instructions, in combination with the resin composite Tetric N Ceram (IvoclarVivadent). The samples were thermocycled, followed by shear bond strength testing using a Universal testing machine (Hounsfield). Data were subjected to statistical analysis using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) (P<0.05) and Post hoc Tukey’s test for inter- and intra- group analysis respectively. Results: Clearfil SE Bond yielded the highest shear bond strength values (30.9 ±4.66 MPa) which were statistically significant, followed byTetric N Bond Universal group (29.8 ±4.34) and the lowest shear bond strength values were recorded for Futura Bond DC (18.2 ±3.13). Conclusion: Clearfil SE bond and Tetric N bond Universal can be considered as better options than Futura Bond DC.

AIM: This study aimed to assess the shear bond strength of a self-adhering flowable resin composite versus a total-etch one to different surfaces of permanent-molars. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Thirty-six sound human permanent molars were used. The teeth were embedded in acrylic blocks, such that their buccal surfaces were shown. The teeth were divided into three groups: Group I: Uncut-Enamel, Group II: Cut-enamel-surfaces with minimal-grinding and Group III: dentin-surfaces. Half of the teeth in each group were used for bonding to a self-adhering flowable resin-composite (Dyad-flow, Kerr, USA). While the other half of each group was bonded to a total-etch flowable resin-composite (Filtek™Z350-XT,3M-ESPE, USA) which necessitate etching and bonding. Teflon-mold was used for constructing resin composite cylinders (3 × 3 mm) over the buccal surfaces. The Dyad-flow was applied in the central hole of the mould placed upon tooth-surface, and then light-cured for 20 seconds. The Filtek-Z350-XT was applied similarly after etching and bonding steps. The teeth were stored in 37°C distilled water for 24 hours. The strength was measured using a universal testing machine and statistically analysed. Modes of failure were studied using digital-microscope. RESULTS: Mean values of shear bond strength for the Dyad and Filtek-Z350-XT in the uncut-enamel were 3.5 and 24.6MPa respectively, while that for cut-enamel were 4.5 and 12.7MPa respectively (Both highly statistically significant P ≤ 0.01) and in dentin were 4.3 and 6.7MPa respectively (Statistically significant P ≤ 0.05). The failure mode for Dyad was mainly adhesive (un-cut or cut-enamel 83.3% adhesive and 16.7% mixed, while in dentin 100% adhesive). While the modes of failure for Filtek-Z350-XT in enamel, either cut or un-cut, were 50% cohesive and 50% mixed, whereas in dentin 100% adhesive. CONCLUSION: Bonding of self-etch ″Dyad-flow″ flowable resin-composite was lower than the total-etch one in enamel and dentin. Thus further material improvement may be required.

Aim: The purpose of this in vitro study was to assess the shear bond strength (SBS) and bond failure types of a resin-composite to six pulp-capping materials used in primary teeth. Study design: Eight-disc specimens from each pulp-capping material (6 groups) to bond to Filtek™ Z350 XT Flowable using a standard PVC tube (2×2mm). All groups were prepared according to the instruction of the manufacturer. The SBS was measured with a crosshead speed of 0.5 mm/min using a universal testing machine. Failure mode evaluation was completed using Digital Microscope by two independent examiners. Results: Urbical LC® showed the highest SBS (Mean±SD) followed by ProRoot® MTA and TheraCal LC® (35.422±2.910, 22.114±2.515, and 21.175±1.983) respectively. ANOVA showed significant differences between all groups (P=0.0001). Urbical LC® and Photac™ Fil QuickAplicap™ were statistically significant different from all other pulp-capping materials groups. ProRoot® MTA was statistically significant different than Biodentine® (P=0.0001) and Photac™ Fil (P=0.0001). The total number of bond failure was recorded for cohesive B failure/cohesive in the pulp-capping material (14) and adhesive failure (14). Conclusion: Most of the tested pulp-capping materials bonded to Filtek™ Z350 XT demonstrated clinically acceptable and high SBS. Urbical LC showed the highest SBS while Biodentine® showed the lowest SBS.

Objective.The aim of this in vitro study was to determine the shear bond strength (SBS) and adhesive remnant index (ARI) score of two self-etching no-mix adhesives (iBond™and Scotchbond™) on different prosthetic surfaces and enamel, in comparison with the commonly used total etch system Transbond XT™.Materials and Methods. A total of 270 surfaces (1 enamel and 8 restorative surfaces,n=30) were randomly divided into three adhesive groups. In group 1 (control) brackets were bonded with Transbond XT primer. In the experimental groups iBond adhesive (group 2) and Scotchbond Universal adhesive (group 3) were used. The SBS was measured using a Zwicki 1120™testing machine. The ARI and SBS were compared statistically using the Kruskal–Wallis test (P≤0.05).Results. Significant differences in SBS and ARI were found between the control group and experimental groups.Conclusions. Transbond XT showed the highest SBS on human enamel. Scotchbond Universal on average provides the best bonding on all other types of surface (metal, composite, and porcelain), with no need for additional primers. It might therefore be helpful for simplifying bonding in orthodontic procedures on restorative materials in patients. If metal brackets have to be bonded to a metal surface, the use of a dual-curing resin is recommended.

The objective of this in vitro study was to assess and compare the shear bond strength of conventional and modified orthodontic tubes bonded to the surface of dry and saliva-contaminated enamel. The sample consisted of 40 human teeth, which were randomly divided into four groups according to attachment base and presence or absence of saliva contamination as follows: Group CB, conventional orthodontic tubes without salivary contamination; Group CB-S, conventional orthodontic tubes with salivary contamination; Groups BM, orthodontic tubes modified by welding a metal mesh to their base without salivary contamination; and Group BM-S, modified orthodontic tubes with salivary contamination. Shear bond strength test was performed in a universal testing machine and analysis of the adhesive remnant index (ARI) by optical microscopy. Two-way ANOVA was used, followed by Tukey’s test at a statistical significance level of 5%. The ARI results were analysed descriptively. There was statistically significant difference between the groups regarding the shear bond strength values, with conventional tubes presenting significantly higher values (P < 0.05). In addition, the presence of salivary contamination interfered negatively with the behaviour of conventional tubes only (P < 0.05). Shear bond strength was not improved by increasing the area of the orthodontic tubes. Moreover, salivary contamination influenced negatively the SBS values, but only when conventional tubes were used.

AbstractIn the routine clinical situation, the contamination by blood and/or saliva in restorative procedures can be happen in non-cooperation of the patient in dental office. The aim of the study was to assess in vitro shear bond strength of a resin sealant associated with two types of adhesives contaminated with saliva and blood. Healthy human molars were used and the specimens and the crowns were sectioned in the bucco-lingual direction, thus obtaining two segments of similar proportions (mesial and distal), totaling 60 surfaces, and the surfaces were randomly divided into 4 groups (n = 15). Group I (control) received no type of contamination and the sealant was applied. In group II, the surfaces were contaminated with 10 μl of saliva/blood and the sealant was applied. In group III, the surfaces were contaminated with 10 μl of saliva/blood and the Single Bond total-etch adhesive system was applied followed by application of sealant. In group IV, the surfaces were contaminated with 10 μl of saliva/blood and the Prime & Bond NT total-etch adhesive system was applied followed by the application of sealant. Samples were tested in the universal testing machine and the analysis of shear bond strength was performed. A difference between Group I (12.61MPa) and the other groups was found; Group II (2. 28MPa) was different than Groups III (7.07MPa) and IV (7.79MPa), but Groups III and IV were similar. The application of an adhesive system when there is contamination with saliva/blood is required prior to application of pit and fissure sealants. Keywords: Pit and Fissure Sealants. ResumoNa situação clínica de rotina, a contaminação por sangue e/ou saliva em procedimentos restauradores pode ocorrer em pacientes que não colaboram no consultório odontológico. O objetivo do estudo foi avaliar a resistência ao cisalhamento in vitro de um selante de resina associado a dois tipos de adesivos contaminados com saliva e sangue. Foram utilizados molares humanos saudáveis e os espécimes e as coroas foram seccionados na direção bucal-lingual, obtendo assim dois segmentos de proporções semelhantes (mesial e distal), totalizando 60 superfícies, e as superfícies foram divididas aleatoriamente em 4 grupos (n = 15). O Grupo I (controle) não recebeu nenhum tipo de contaminação e o selante foi aplicado. No grupo II, as superfícies foram contaminadas com 10 μl de saliva / sangue e o selante foi aplicado. No grupo III, as superfícies foram contaminadas com 10 μl de saliva / sangue e o sistema adesivo Single-Bond foi aplicado seguindo a aplicação de selante. No grupo IV, as superfícies foram contaminadas com 10 μl de saliva / sangue e o sistema adesivo de ataque total Prime & Bond NT foi aplicado seguido da aplicação de vedante. As amostras foram testadas na máquina de ensaio universal e a análise da resistência à ligação ao cisalhamento foi realizada. Uma diferença entre o Grupo I (12,61MPa) e os outros grupos foi encontrada; O Grupo II (2,28 MPa) foi diferente dos Grupos III (7,07MPa) e IV (7,79 MPa), mas os Grupos III e IV foram semelhantes. Abstract To evaluate a fixed-space maintainer made of light-cure acrylic resin (LCAR) for its flexural and shear bond strength using different bonding systems to the enamel. 45 extracted primary teeth were selected. They were randomly divided into three equal groups (n = 15) along with the type of adhesive system (Tetric Flow, Transbond XT, and Fuji Ortho LC) used for bonding (LCAR) to the tooth surface. Surfaces were treated; LCAR was attached to the treated surfaces using a split Teflon mold. For flexural strength testing, ten bars of LCAR were made using another Teflon-split mold. Shear bond strength and mean flexural strength values were evaluated by a universal testing machine. The highest values of bond strength were recorded for Transbond XT, followed by Tetric Flow, while the lowest values were for Fuji Ortho LC. Various groups had a significant difference as investigated by ANOVA. ARI scores showed no significant difference in debond sites. Mean value and standard deviation of flexural strength for LCAR were 82.83  ± 5.2. LCAR has superior mechanical properties and could be an alternative to currently-in-use space maintainer though in vivo and in vitro trials are needed to progress the ultimate design of LCAR.
