The purpose of this work was to study the general characteristics of quality of life (QoL), the effect of overweight on QoL, the nature of eating behaviour in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) type 2 and   concomitant overweight (OW) and obesity, as well as to establish the correlation with indicators of functional state of the arterial vessels. 64 people (34 women and 30 men) with DM and concomitant  overweight and obesity (average age 56.3 ± 10.23 years) formed the 1 group, 34 people (19 women and 15 men), whose average age was 55.6 ± 11.92 years constituted the 2 group, and  28 healthy individuals formed the control group. SF-36v2 questionnaires were used to evaluate QoL. The effect of overweight on QoL was analyzed according to the IWQOL-Lite questionnaire data, the patterns of eating behaviour were determined by the COEQ4 for 7 days using FPRS questionnaire. The functional state of the arterial vessels was assessed by estimating the pulse wave velocity using the automated rheographic complex ReoCom (KhAI Medika (Ukraine)). The patients with DM and concomitant overweight and obesity were found to experience some changes in QoL according to the SF-36v2 questionnaire. The changes were primarily characterized by a decrease in physical activity, as well as in social and emotional status. These changes differed not only from the QoL assessment by healthy individuals, but also from those of patients with DM and normal body weight. The nature of eating behaviour in overweight or obese patients with DM was characterized by an increased hunger in parallel with a worsened emotional state and an increased desire to eat certain types of foods that can contribute to weight gain. Structural changes in arterial vessels that typically are indicative of arterial stiffness correlate with indicators of emotional state and physical activity in patients with DM and comorbid overweight and obesity.

Cough is the most frequent symptom for which patients consult with their health care provider throughout the world. This symptom could be happened not only in sick individuals but also healthy individuals. At some stage, it is distressing, inhibits normal social activities, and reduces quality of life. Besides these detrimental effects, cough is the most effective defense mechanism to eliminate foreign materials, including various pathogens, from the respiratory tract. It begins with a series of breathing maneuvers which triggers sudden expulsion of air which is divided into three phases, i.e. inspiration, compression, and expiration phase. Cough occurs due to activation of mechanical or chemical sensory receptors in the larynx and lower respiratory tract which stimulates reflex arc complex. This stimulus is then transmitted to the afferent pathway to the cough center in the medulla through the vagus nerve to trigger expiration muscles to produce cough. It is important to know the cause of cough because cough is an indicator for patients and doctors for early diagnosis and therapy of disease. Therefore, cough is classified into acute, subacute, and chronic according to its duration. Available medications for symptomatic management of cough are inadequate due to lack of proven efficacy and/or their undesirable or intolerable side effects. This article aims to provide information on cough management to improve therapeutic effectiveness and patient quality of life.

People living in the rural areas in developing countries are deprived of the basic needs including health. In Bangladesh, the rural poor people are facing difficulties to be facilitated from the enhanced medical services, mostly because of the increased medical expenses, and the time required to complete the whole process. Henceforth, it is necessary for the government to enhance the medical facilities to its rural citizens for proper development. It has been argued that the health card service system in Bangladesh can enhance the medical services. However, no studies have been conducted to investigate the impact of health card on the quality of life of rural people in Bangladesh. This study attempts to investigate this issue from actual beneficiary perspective. The main objective of this study is to provide a synopsis of the roles of health card on rural citizen of Bangladesh. The data were collected through telephone and face to face interview from a purposive sample in rural community, Bangladesh. The findings show that by using health card service system, rural poor people can get the facilities to visit the doctor directly whereas previously they had to buy ticket and wait for a long time in front of the doctors’ room. The result of this study suggests that, by using health card the quality of medical service can be enhanced as well as the time, cost and number of visit can be minimized. The findings of this research will be very useful for policy maker in Bangladesh.

Background: Changes in steroidal sex hormones in peri- and post-menopausal women affect their bodies, including their periodontal tissues. Disorders of periodontal tissues can impact the patient’s quality of life, so a valid instrument in measuring quality of life is needed in order to know how much periodontitis affects the quality of life of sufferers in peri and postmenopausal women. Objective: This study aimed to examine the validity and reliability of the quality of life questionnaire for patients with periodontitis (modified Indonesian version). Methods: Cross-cultural adaptation was tested in peri- and post-menopausal women aged 45–59 years. The reliability and validity of the questionnaire was examined among 268 women, who lived in Jakarta and were undergoing a periodontal examination to determine periodontitis severity. Results: Cronbach’s α coefficients for internal consistency were: 0.929 (questions related to gums) and 0.942 (questions related to teeth); The test-retest reliability was good as determined based on a test–repeat test involving 27 women; the interclass coefficient was 0.880 (questions related to gums) and 0.878 (questions related to teeth). The construct validity of the questionnaire (questions related to gums and teeth) showed that the questionnaire was significantly associated with oral health and food taste (P<0.001). The discriminant validity of the questionnaire, the influence of the gums on speaking difficulties (P=0.011) and family life (P=0.025) and the influence of the teeth on family life (P=0.020) and mood (P=0.019) could enable differentiation of periodontal severity in peri- and post-menopausal women. Conclusion: This study confirmed the reliability and validity of the quality of life questionnaire for patients with periodontitis (modified Indonesian version) in peri- and post-menopausal women, therefore this questionnaire can be used to measure the quality of life of periodontitis patients in peri and postmenopause in Indonesia.
