OBJECTIVE: To investigate the risk of mortality associated with sarcopenic obesity (SO), obesity (OB), and sarcopenia in elderlies. METHODS: We analyzed longitudinal data from 270 participants > 65 years of age of Phase III of the Study on Frailty in Brazilian Older People (FIBRA–RJ–2012). Socioeconomic, demographic, lifestyle, morbidity, and functional data were collected by home based interviews. DXA and body composition assessment was conducted in a laboratory. In women, OB was diagnosed when body fat percentage ≥ 38% and sarcopenia by an Appendicular Lean Mass Index (ALMI) < 6.00 kg/m² and muscle strength < 16 Kgf. In men, OB was diagnosed when body fat percentage ≥ 27%, and sarcopenia was diagnosed with ALMI < 7.00 kg/m² and muscle strength < 27 Kgf. SO was assessed by combining variables used to diagnose obesity and sarcopenia. The probabilistic linkage method was used to obtain deaths in the 2012-January 2017 period from the Brazilian Mortality Registry. Cox regression models were tested, and crude and adjusted hazard ratio calculations were conducted. RESULTS: After adjusting for sex, age, race/skin color, walking as an exercise, and hypertension, individuals with sarcopenia were 5.7 times more likely to die (95%CI: 1.17–27.99) than others without sarcopenia and obesity. CONCLUSION: A high risk of death was observed in individuals with sarcopenia. These results show the need for preventive strategies of early detection and treatment in order to increase survival employing multimodal interventions.

This study examined the effect of the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet containing lean red meat on measures of body composition and muscle strength in a cohort of obese adults 65 and older; 36 males (n = 15) and females (n = 21) consumed 1800 kcal/day for 12 weeks under controlled feeding conditions. The study diet included daily intakes of 126 g of meat. Measures of body composition and muscle strength were obtained at weeks 0, 3, 6, 9, and 12. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner were provided every day for 12 weeks, and equal portions of meat were distributed at each meal. Significant effects of the study diet were detected across time for total body weight, body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, hip circumference, body fat percentage, absolute fat mass (AFM), and blood pressure such that a decrease (p < 0.001) was observed over 12 weeks. Significant effects of the study diet were detected across time for sit/stand (p < 0.001) such that an increase was observed. From baseline to study end, total body weight decreased by 6.3% (p < 0.001), body fat percentage decreased by 2.5% (p < 0.001), and absolute fat mass (AFM) decreased by 4.4 kg (p < 0.001). By the study end, skeletal muscle mass (SMM) was positively correlated with handgrip strength (R2 = 0.75; p = 0.001) and resting energy expenditure (REE) (R2 = 0.29; p = 0.001). Handgrip strength, gait, balance, and resting energy expenditure (REE) were well maintained (p > 0.05) throughout the study. These findings suggest that the DASH diet has the potential to be a tool to preserve muscle strength while reducing fat mass in obese older adults.

With the aim to investigate the association between body composition of adolescents and cardiorespiratory fitness, this research was carried out on a sample of seventh grade primary school students (38 female and 44 male students). The sample of measuring instruments for body composition assessment were: body mass index, triceps, subscapularis and suprailiac subcutaneous adipose tissue, body fat percentage, muscle mass percentage and fat-free mass. The “Beep” test was used for the assessment of cardiorespiratory fitness. At the multivariate level the results have shown that body composition, as a system predictor, explained 51% (p= .000) of variance of cardiorespiratory fitness of the total sample of students, 29% (p= .021) of the girls and 51% (p= .000) of the boys. At the univariate level of the total sample it was noticed that the sum of three skinfolds (t= -4.91; p= .000) and fat-free mass (t= 4.54; p= .000) had a high influence on system prediction. The sum of three skinfolds in the total sample, sample of girls and sample of boys had a negative impact on cardiorespiratory fitness. For the girls, body fat percentage had a positive impact on cardiorespiratory fitness, while in the total sample and sample of boys, fat-free mass had a positive impact on cardiorespiratory fitness. It could be concluded that the association between body composition components and VO2max was clearly demonstrated in adolescents.

Background Aging is associated with decreases in muscle strength and simultaneous changes in body composition, including decreases in muscle mass, muscle quality and increases in adiposity. Methods Adults (n = 369; 236 females) aged 65–74 years living independently were recruited from the cross-sectional Researching Eating Activity and Cognitive Health (REACH) study. Body fat percentage and appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASM) (sum of lean mass in the arms and legs) were assessed using Dual-energy X-ray Absorptiometry (Hologic, QDR Discovery A). The ASM index was calculated by ASM (kilograms) divided by height (meters) squared. Isometric grip strength was measured using a hand grip strength dynamometer (JAMAR HAND). Results Linear regression analyses revealed that muscle strength was positively associated with the ASM index (R2 = 0.431, p < 0.001). When exploring associations between muscle strength and muscle mass according to obesity classifications (obesity ≥30% males; ≥40% females), muscle mass was a significant predictor of muscle strength in non-obese participants. However, in participants with obesity, muscle mass was no longer a significant predictor of muscle strength. Conclusions Body fat percentage should be considered when measuring associations between muscle mass and muscle strength in older adults.

Background:Sarcopenia can be age associated (primary form) or secondary to chronic disorders, including rheumatic inflammatory disorders. Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is a chronic autoimmune rheumatic disease characterized by widespread vasculopathy, progressive fibrosis of the skin and other internal organs, such as lung, kidneys, gastrointestinal tract, cardiovascular system. Different from the other chronic rheumatic inflammatory disorders, sarcopenia has not been well evaluated in SSc patients.Objectives:To assess the body composition (BC) and to identify the frequency of sarcopenia (SP) in SSc patients.Methods:A total of 44 women who met the ACR/EULAR 2013 classification criteria were included. Mean age was 53,2 + 8,8 years. The median disease duration was 7,0 [4,0;12,0] years. 26 (59,1%) patients had limited and 18 (40,9%) - diffuse cutaneous subtype. Body composition was measured using Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) of whole body. The appendicular lean mass index (ALMI) was calculated as the ratio of appendicular lean mass (ALM) to height (kg/m2). Handgrip measurement and chair stand test were performed. Physical function was measured with the Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB). SP was diagnosed in agreement with the 2019 revised consensus on definition and diagnosis of SP of the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People 2 (EWGSOP2): handgrip <16kg, chair stand test > 15 seconds for 5 rises, ALM <15 kg or ALMI <5.5 kg/m2. Severe SP was detected if the patient additionally had gait speed ≤0.8 m/s or SPPB ≤ 8-point score. Overfat was defined as body fat percentage >35%.Results:The median bone mineral content was 2.0 [1.8; 2.2] kg, total lean mass - 39,5 [35,7; 45,5] kg, ALM - 16,3 [14,5;19,4] kg, ALMI – 6,5 [5,7; 7,2] kg/m2, trunk fat mass – 13,5 [9,1; 16,7] kg and total fat mass - 26,6 [20,1; 34,5] kg. Body fat percentage was 38,8% [34,2; 42,7].9 (20,5%) women had low ALM and low ALMI, 6 (13,6%) – only low ALM. Healthy BC was found in 5 (11,3%), low ALM or low ALMI – in 7 (15,9%), overfat – in 24 (54,5%), low ALM + overfat – in 8 (18,2%) patients. We found no differences in BC between SSc patients with limited and diffuse cutaneous subtype.Low muscle strength (SP probable) was found in 21 (47,7%) women, meanwhile confirmed SP (low muscle strength and muscle mass) was diagnosed in 10 (22,7%) patients, among them 5 (11,4%) persons had severe SP. No significant difference in SP frequency among patients with limited and diffuse cutaneous SSc 4 (15,4%) and 6 (33,3%), respectively, (p=0,27). Osteoporosis was found in 6 (60%) patients with SP without differences in SSc subtypes.Conclusion:Healthy BC was found only in 11,3% cases, while overfat - in 72,7% and low ALM – in 34,1% SSc patients. SP was detected in 22.7% of women, among them in half of cases - severe SP, without any differences between the limited and diffuse subtypes of the disease.Disclosure of Interests:None declared

Abstract Context Severe vitamin D deficiency may lead to myopathy in adults. Little is known about vitamin D and muscle strength in children. Objective To test whether hand grip strength (HGS) in 5-year-old children is associated with serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (S-25OHD). Design Observational study in the population-based Odense Child Cohort, Denmark. At 5 years, anthropometrics, body fat percentage by skinfold measurements, HGS (n = 881), and S-25OHD2+3 (n = 499) were obtained. Results Mean (SD) HGS was higher for boys compared with girls [8.76 (1.76) vs 8.1 (1.64) kg, P &lt; 0.001]. Mean (SD) 5-year S-25OHD was 70.7 (24.5) nmol/L. HGS was directly associated with height in girls and with weight (directly) and body fat percentage (inversely) in both sexes (P &lt; 0.01 for all). In girls, 5-year S-25OHD was associated with HGS, adjusting for height, weight, and body fat percentage [β = 0.011 (95% CI: 0.004; 0.019), P = 0.003]. S-25OHD ≥75 nmol/L was associated with higher HGS compared with values &lt;50 nmol/L [adjusted β = 0.783 (95% CI: 0.325; 1.241), P = 0.001]. The odds of having myopathy (HGS &lt;10th percentile) were reduced by approximately 70% for S-25OHD ≥50 vs &lt;50 nmol/L [adjusted OR: 0.310 (95% CI: 0.126; 0.762), P = 0.011]. No associations were seen for boys. Pregnancy or umbilical cord S-25OHD did not associate with 5-year HGS. Conclusions Five-year S-25OHD was independently associated with HGS and myopathy in girls but not in boys. Muscle strength may be dependent on vitamin D status even in the higher range in preschool girls. The sex difference remains unexplained.

BACKGROUND: The Functional Movement Screen (FMS) is a clinical assessment tool used to determine musculoskeletal dysfunctions and asymmetries in athletes. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate whether FMS scores differed between elite youth male soccer players with low body fat percentage and those with normal body fat percentage and between those with and without a history of soccer injury. METHODS: Fifty-three elite youth male soccer players were included in the study. The participants’ injury histories were recorded, followed by body composition assessment and FMS tests. The participants were grouped according to body fat percentage and injury history for data analysis. RESULTS: The mean age, weight and height of the participants were 17.11 ± 0.91 years, 68.78 ± 7.41 kg and 1.77 ± 0.57 meters, respectively. Comparisons of the groups according to body fat percentage and injury history revealed no significant differences in FMS scores (p> 0.05). CONCLUSION: Lower body fat percentage did not confer an advantage or disadvantage to elite youth male soccer players in terms of FMS scores FMS scores provide limited information to predict injuries in elite youth male players.

Examiners with minimal training and skill are often called upon to make body composition assessments using field methods. This study compared the interrater reliability of novice examiners for the skinfold (SKF) and A-mode ultrasound (US) methods of body composition assessment. Undergraduate Kinesiology majors (48 males, 32 females) with minimal training took both SKF and US measurements at three sites (males: chest, abdomen, thigh; females: triceps, suprailiac, thigh). Interrater reliability was significantly better for US compared to SKF at the thigh (ICCUS = 0.975, ICCSKF = 0.912) and abdomen (ICCUS = 0.984, ICCSKF = 0.693) for men and suprailiac (ICCUS = 0.978, ICCSKF = 0.883) for women. Additionally, interrater reliability of the US method was superior to the SKF method for the estimate of male body fat percentage (ICCUS = 0.990, ICCSKF = 0.862). The 95% CI was generally narrower for the US method than the SKF method at each site. The interrater reliability of the US method was superior to or equal to the SKF method for measuring subcutaneous body fat when novice examiners took the measurements.

Purpose Conceptual physical education (CPE) classes have been widely offered to promote a healthy lifestyle in higher education settings. The purpose of this paper is to examine the effects of a CPE course on health-related fitness (HRF) levels among college freshmen. Design/methodology/approach A pre- and post-test research design was used. In total, 50 freshmen in a US university were enrolled in a 13-week CPE course. Their HRF levels were assessed by the Fitnessgram at the beginning and the end of the course. Findings Students significantly enhanced their aerobic capacity, upper-body muscle strength and endurance, abdominal muscle strength and endurance, and decreased body fat percentage. No significant improvement in flexibility was found among the total sample. However, non-kinesiology students significantly enhanced their flexibility while the opposite trend was found among kinesiology students. Female students reduced more body fat percentage, while male students increased their aerobic capacity more rapidly than their female counterparts. Practical implications The CPE course could yield significant improvement in HRF among freshmen, regardless of sex or major. Universities may consider offering CPE courses for all students and mandate such courses as a degree requirement. Originality/value This empirical study investigated HRF level changes that occurred after a CPE course intervention among college freshmen. Sex and major difference in HRF changes were revealed. The interventions included in the CPE course could help improve freshmen's HRF levels in future intervention programs in a similar setting.

Beneficial physical and physiological health outcomes of yoga practice are well-supported by empirical data. However, whether weekly frequency of training is sufficient to evoke positive changes, is still an open question. The present intervention study investigated the effects of 10 weekly sessions of beginner level hatha yoga with respect to indicators of physical fitness and physiological markers. 82 young women (mean age of 22.0 ± 3.83 years) participated in the study. The yoga group (N = 49) attended a yoga course consisting of 10 sessions (1.5 h each) on a weekly basis. The control group (N = 33) did not receive any intervention. BMI, body fat percentage, balance (one-leg-stand test with open and closed eyes, functional reach test), flexibility (side bend test, modified sit and reach test) core muscle strength (plank test) as well as resting heart rate (HR), and heart rate variability (HRV) were assessed 1 week before and after the course. Both frequentist and Bayesian analysis showed an improvement in flexibility and balance in the yoga group compared to the control group. The yoga group showed also increased core muscle strength. No changes with respect to BMI, body fat percentage, resting HR and HRV were found. Ninety minute beginner level hatha yoga classes were characterized by 93.39 HR and 195 kcal energy consumption on average. The present findings suggest that weekly setting of a 10-session long hatha yoga training leads to improvements in balance, flexibility and core muscle strength among healthy young women. However, for changes in BMI, body fat percentage, resting HR and HRV longer, and/or more intense interventions are needed.
