Relevance. Studies of the psychological characteristics of migrant students in varying degrees of adaptation to the culture of a Russian university make it possible to establish factors affecting the level of adaptation to develop strategies that reduce the level of cumulative stress and, as a result, increase the level of students’ knowledge assimilation and preserve the physical and psychological health of the student. Goal. To study the level of stress and the factors that form it, among migrant students in varying degrees of adaptation to the culture of a Russian university. Techniques and samples. The study included a group of 109 migrant students of 1–3 courses of study in adolescence from 17 to 20 years old (17.45±0.84), of which 76 (69.72%) men, 33 (30.28%) women; ethnic composition: 45 (41.28%) — Tajiks, 38 (34.86%) — Kyrgyz and 26 (23.86%) representatives of the Kazakh ethnic group. At the research stage, a questionnaire was applied to determine the level of acceptance of Russian culture and the following methods were used: a scale of perceived stress-10, a questionnaire of everyday stressors, a methodology “Life style index” and a questionnaire “Coping strategies” by Lazarus. Results. The level of stress in migrant students is higher than the norm, and in the process of adaptation it increases, forming accumulative stress. The hierarchization of migrant students according to the criterion of awareness of Russian culture entails a different level of application of coping strategies adapted to the Russian society. Empirically, the dominance of such coping strategies as “planning a solution to the problem”, “taking responsibility” and “positive reappraisal” was revealed in the sample of more adapted migrant students. Findings. The data obtained indicate that adaptation by the type of integration leads to the implementation of additional resources and an increase in the level of perceived stress.

BackgroundThe measures taken to contain the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, such as the lockdown in Italy, do impact psychological health; yet, less is known about their effect on cognitive functioning. The transactional theory of stress predicts reciprocal influences between perceived stress and cognitive performance. However, the effects of a period of stress due to social isolation on spatial cognition and exploration have been little examined. The aim of the present study was to investigate the possible effects and impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on spatial cognition tasks, particularly those concerning spatial exploration, and the physiological leftward bias known as pseudoneglect. A right-hemisphere asymmetry for spatial attention processes crucially contributes to pseudoneglect. Other evidence indicates a predominantly right-hemisphere activity in stressful situations. We also analyzed the effects of lockdown on coping strategies, which typically show an opposite pattern of hemispheric asymmetry, favoring the left hemisphere. If so, then pseudoneglect should increase during the lockdown and be negatively correlated with the efficacy of coping strategies.MethodsOne week before the start of the lockdown due to COVID-19 in Italy (T1), we had collected data from a battery of behavioral tests including tasks of peri-personal spatial cognition. During the quarantine period, from late April to early May 2020 (T2), we repeated the testing sessions with a subgroup of the same participants (47 right-handed students, mean age = 20, SD = 1.33). At both testing sessions, participants performed digitized neuropsychological tests, including a Cancellation task, Radial Arm Maze task, and Raven’s Advanced Progressive Matrices. Participants also completed a newly developed COVID-19 Student Stress Scale, based on transactional models of stress, and the Coping Orientation to Problems Experienced—New Italian Version (COPE-NIV) to assess coping orientation.ResultsThe tendency to start cancelation from a left-sided item, to explore first a left-sided arm of the maze, and to choose erroneous response items on the left side of the page on Raven’s matrices increased from T1 to T2. The degree of pseudoneglect increment positively correlated with perceived stress and negatively correlated with Positive Attitude and Problem-Solving COPE-NIV subscales.ConclusionLockdown-related stress may have contributed to increase leftward bias during quarantine through a greater activation of the right hemisphere. On the other hand, pseudoneglect was decreased for better coping participants, perhaps as a consequence of a more balanced hemispheric activity in these individuals.

There has been a growing interest on the negative influence that the environment of higher education institutions has on the mental health of academics, and there is evidence to suggest that the university environment is jeopardising academics’ physical and psychological health. This study sought to review the international literature with a view to ascertaining what the most commonly used measures are to investigate this topic, including the main stressors and coping strategies reported/used by academics and their lived experiences. A thorough review of the literature was conducted, and 28 studies were identified and critically analysed. The review concludes that there is compelling evidence that the university environment is triggering high levels of stress and burnout and low levels of wellbeing for academics. There is extremely limited research on the perceptions and lived experiences of academic staff. It is virtually unknown, what coping strategies academics use to face job demands, and our knowledge about burnout, seems to be limited by the use of one particular measure without cultural adaptations.

The aim of the present study was to examine the relation of general affect to chronic patients’ illness representations, coping strategies and subjective health. Positive and negative affect was used as indicators of the typical personal responses to environmental stimuli. Patients suffering from a cardiovascular disease, diabetes mellitus-II, or rheumatoid arthritis (N=137; 53 males, 84 females) participated in the study, which was conducted in two phases with a two-month time interval. According to the findings, general affect is related to subjective health, even after controlling for illness-related variables. Moreover, the emotional representations of illness and the illness problem-solving coping strategies mediated the relation of positive and negative affect to both physical and psychological health. These findings are important for theory and clinical practice as they may help us better understand the complex relationships between the illness experience and the broader personal and social context. At the same time, they suggest that an intervention plan aiming at both the problem- and the contextrelatedfactors could be more efficient in helping chronic patients, than aiming solely at either the context or the problem.

Expedition teams operating in Polar environments are exposed to a range of environmental, psychological, and social challenges. How a person responds to these demands has implications for their physical and psychological health. In this study, we examined relations between the daily events encountered, coping strategies used, and markers of physical and psychological health in a team of six British Army soldiers (one serving and five reservists) completing a 68-day ski-traverse of the Antarctic continent. In general, daily reports indicated a largely adaptive response to the expedition. There were fluctuations in the events encountered, coping strategies used, and experiences of physical and psychological health throughout the endeavor. Reported daily events and coping strategies explained variability in the positive and negative fluctuations of physical and psychological health. Findings from this study can inform health decision-making of groups operating in Polar environments and others living and working under similar constraints.

The aim of this paper was to investigate the role of the psychological variable of alexithymia both as a risk factor for the development of Ménière’s disease (MD) and as a component that influences the personal experience of MD and the individual quality of life. We collected data from 179 Italian patients who fulfilled criteria for definite MD. Patients filled out validated self-rating questionnaires to assess alexithymia (TAS-20), quality of life (WHOQOL-BREF), anxiety and depression (HADS), perception of stress (PSS) and coping strategies (COPE). Socio-demographic data and MD clinical features were collected using a specific rating form. Subjects affected by MD showed higher levels of alexithymia compared to general population. Among MD patients, those characterized by high levels of alexithymia revealed a significant increase in anxiety and depression, greater perceived stress, a lower quality of life in psychological health and social relationships domains and the use of less mature coping strategies in comparison with MD patients with low or absent alexithymia. Our preliminary data could help in hypothesizing a role of psychological functioning in MD development and in the adaptation to the disease. The presence of alexithymia in patients suffering from MD may constitute a risk factor for the development of anxiety and depression symptoms; greater perceived stress and for poorer psychological and relational quality of life. Therefore, our study design did not allow causal inferences and further studies are needed.
