First report of Branchinecta (Anostraca) in seasonal coastal pools in the Araucania region (Puaucho, 39°S, Chile)

Abstract To date, he fairy shrimps (Anostraca) of Chilean inland waters have been poorly described. Those that were described mainly belong to the genus Branchinecta, and the reports are primarily restricted to shallow seasonal pools at the northern and southern extremes of Chile. The aim of the present study was to give a first description of Branchinecta rocaensis, reported from ephemeral coastal pools in the Puaucho dunes, situated in the Araucania region. The results of null model analysis revealed first, that species associations are random and that there is niche overlap, while according to the principal component analysis, B. rocaensis was present at sites with low conductivity, low total dissolved solids and low temperature values, but with a high abundance of ostracods. The results obtained would agree with similar observations for Branchinecta habitats in southern Chilean Patagonia.

The distribution of crustaceans of inland waters in southern Patagonia is characterized by the presence of sub-Antarctic and southern South American species. The aims of the present study were to study the geographical distribution of the calanoid copepod Boeckella brevicaudata (Brady, 1875) and the community structure of the zooplankton assemblages in which this species occurs. This last purpose was approached by applying null-models analyses based on species co-occurrence and niche-sharing. The species itself inhabits sub-Antarctic islands as well as southern South America. The results of the co-occurrence null model analysis revealed that the communities with this species have no regulating factors, whereas the niche overlap null model analysis revealed that these species share the same ecological niche. We thus found low abundances for all species, with specifically low B. brevicaudata abundance, at low mineral contents of the water. The results obtained were similar among sites in southern Argentinean and southern Chilean Patagonia, and on sub-Antarctic islands of which data were available.

This paper presents data on alkalinity, pH, total dissolved solids, and concentrations of calcium and magnesium in Tasmanian inland waters. The majority of both lentic and lotic localities have low amounts of total dissolved solids (<100 p.p.m.) and calcium (<10 p.p.m.), and contain either "soft" or "extremely soft" water (with <28 and <10 p.p.m. of bicarbonate, respectively). Their pH usually lies between 6.0 and 8.0 and they display various orders of ionic dominance.

Abstract The fauna communities of ephemeral pools in southern Chile are characterized by heterogeneity of crustacean taxa; nevertheless, no detailed studies exist of their community structure. The aim of the present study was to analyze the crustacean community structure in two groups of ephemeral pools (Puaucho and Nigue pools) in the coastal zone of the Araucanía region. A correlation matrix was made by species abundance against temperature, conductivity, pH and total dissolved solids. In a second step, a null model for species co-occurrence was applied to the total data and to each group. The results for total data revealed a significant direct relation between the abundance of H. costera, C. dubia and Mesocyclops. For the Puaucho pools, the same results were found together with direct associations with total dissolved solids, conductivity and pH. Finally, different results were found for the Nigue pools, with no clear significant associations, either direct or indirect, between the abundance of different crustacean taxa and abiotic parameters. These results were supported by the co-occurrence null model analysis, which revealed the presence of regulator factors for the total data, and for each of the two groups. Ecological topics are discussed with emphasis on meta-community dynamics.

Based on the daily climate data in winter and relative meteorological yield of loquat for 2 meteorological stations in Putian from 1992 to 2009, this paper studied the disaster-inducing factors and integrated climatic index for low temperature injury of loquat. The results showed that the critical temperature for low temperature injury of loquat could be determined as 3.0°C. The disaster-inducing factors included extreme minimum temperature, the sum of daily numbers for less than or equal to 3.0°C, the sustained days of low temperature injury for less than or equal to 3.0°C, and harmful chilling accumulation for less than or equal to 3.0°C, and there were obvious correlations among these factors. According to the method of principal component analysis, an integrated climatic index was obtained. By the correlation analysis of integrated climatic index for low temperature injury and the relative meteorological yield of loquat in Putian, the value of integrated climatic index of low temperature injury was significantly negatively correlated with the yield of loquat, and could be used to analyze the degree of low temperature injury of loquat.

The zooplankton assemblages in Chilean Patagonian lakes are characterised mainly by their low biodiversity and high predominance of calanoids copepods, a pattern that has been studied for large and deep lakes between 38-51° S, and shallow ponds at 51° S. The aim of the present study was analyse the zooplankton assemblages in different water bodies located in coastal zones, middle valleys and mountain zones between 37-39° S. For this purpose, the following variables were considered: maximum depth, latitude, altitude, chlorophyll-a and species number, and to these variables, a Principal Component Analysis (PCA) was applied. A co-occurrence null model analysis was also applied for determining the existence of a random process in crustacean species associations. The results denoted low species richness, and different species associations for studied sites, and the null model analysis revealed the absence of a random process as regulator of species associations. Furthermore, a low species/genera ratio was identified, which denotes low productivity of the studied sites. These results were supported by a PCA analysis which denoted that the main determinant factors are chlorophyll concentration and species number that are directly associated. The obtained results are in agreement with descriptions in the literature for species diversity for lakes of Chilean Patagonia that describes oligotrophy as the main regulator of zooplankton assemblages. Other ecological and limnological topics are discussed in the present study.

The hydrogeochemical characteristics of coalbed-produced water can provide insights into the sources of ions and water, the groundwater environments, hydrodynamic conditions, and water-rock interactions of depositional basins. To study the water-rock reaction process and reveal whether there is a microbial activity in the groundwater, a case of the Dafosi biogenic gas field was chosen by testing the ionic concentrations and hydrogen and oxygen isotopic compositions of coalbed-produced water and employing R-type cluster and principal component analyses. The results showed that Na+, Cl − , and HCO3- are the principal ions in the coalbed-produced water, while the water type is mainly a Na–Cl. Due to the hydrolysis of HCO3-, the pH in this region was controlled primarily by HCO3-. As the main cation in water, Na+ contributed substantially to the total dissolved solids. Na+ is also related to the exchange between rock-bound Na+ and Ca2+ and Mg2+ in water or surrounding rocks. The coalbed-produced water’s oxygen isotopes displayed a characteristic 18O drift and enrichment, indicating that the 16O isotope in the water was preferentially exchanged with the coal organic matter. Early evaporation is also contributed to the enrichment of TDS (total dissolved solids) and 18O in the water. The central part of the study area, including the Qijia anticline, was affected by the Yanshanian uplift and denudation and subsequently developed a water-conducting fissure zone and was recharged atmospheric precipitation; these conditions were conducive to the formation of secondary biogenic gas.

The Araucania region (38° S, Chile) originally had native perennial forest in middle valleys regions, that was gradually replaced by towns and agricultural zones during the last century, nevertheless there is some relicts of these native forests that are preserved, one of these relicts is Rucamanque, a protected area in the surrounding of Temuco town. The aim of the present study was a first aquatic Arthropoda description in a stream of this protected area using species co-occurrence and niche overlap null models. The results of species co-occurrence null model revealed that species associations are random, whereas the results of niche sharing revealed that species reported have different ecological niches, and in consequence there is not interspecifi c competence. The exposed results revealed the presence of aquatic fauna representative for unpolluted streams; similar descriptions were found for other similar inland water ecosystems in Argentinean and Chilean Patagonia.

The impacts of environmental conditions on pasting and physicochemical properties were investigated using flour samples of the same cassava cultivar grown in seven different locations. Significant location differences in essential component (except for fiber) content of cassava flour were observed. Cassava flour showed obviously separated traits in the principal component analysis (PCA) of near-infrared spectra (NIR) according to geographical origins. The environmental effects were significant in the pasting properties of cassava flours. Sufficient precipitation and suitable low temperature promoted accumulation of starch in cassava, resulting in the high peak viscosity values of cassava flour. Pasting temperatures of cassava flour had a significant direct correlation with growth temperature and were negatively correlated with altitude. Precipitation from August to October showed a stronger direct correlation with trough and final viscosity. The results of this study indicated the possibility of predicting and controlling cassava flour quality and pasting properties according to the environmental conditions.
