Additional records and new species of Hydraena Kugelann, 1794 (Insecta: Coleoptera: Hydraenidae) from Balabac and Palawan, Philippines

Abstract Three new species of the genus Hydraena Kugelann, 1794 of the Philippine Island of Palawan are described in detail, namely H. angelitofelipepunoi sp. n., H. buschietanni sp. n., and H. perpusilla sp. n., along with faunistic records of further species of the genus from previously unexplored areas of Balabac and Palawan. The genital characters of the new species are illustrated by digital line drawings. Photographs of their habitus and type localities are provided. The habitat conditions of their collection sites are assessed and implications of the usefulness of Hydraena species as monitoring organisms for the conservation of vulnerable habitats are briefly discussed. An updated checklist of the Hydraena of Greater Palawan is provided which now comprises 15 described species, of which 13 are endemic to this intra-Philippine island complex.

Three new species of the genus Sectonema collected from natural habitats in Vietnam are studied, described and illustrated, including line drawings, LM and/or SEM pictures. Sectonema birrucephalum sp. n. is characterised by its 2.73-4.35 mm long body, lip region 18-20 μm broad and offset by deep constriction, odontostyle 10.0-11.5 μm long on its ventral side, 659-989 μm long neck, pharyngeal expansion occupying 63-68% of total neck length, uterus a simple tube, 221-277 μm long, pars refringens vaginae present, V = 54-56, tail short (31-43 μm, c = 85-111, c′ = 0.6-0.8) and rounded, spicules 72-75 μm long, and four or five irregularly spaced ventromedian supplements beyond the range of the spicules. Sectonema buccociliatum sp. n. is distinguished by its 2.00-2.46 mm long body, lip region offset by constriction, 19-20 μm broad and bearing perioral cilia-like structures, odontostyle 13-14 μm long at its ventral side, 530-625 μm long neck, pharyngeal expansion occupying 62-69% of total neck length, uterus a simple tube, 116-152 μm long, pars refringens vaginae present, V = 56-62, tail short (23-31 μm, c = 72-104, c′ = 0.6-0.8) and rounded, spicules 56-68 μm long, and 3-5 spaced and weakly developed ventromedian supplements beyond the range of the spicules. Sectonema ciliatum sp. n. is characterised by its 2.79-3.13 mm long body, lip region offset by constriction, 21-22 μm broad and bearing perioral cilia-like structures, odontostyle 14-15 μm long at its ventral side, 699-722 μm long neck, pharyngeal expansion occupying 60% of total neck length, uterus a simple tube, 201-244 μm long, pars refringens vaginae present, V = 52-53, tail short (33-35 μm, c = 82-92, c′ = 0.6-0.7) and rounded, spicules 70-72 μm long, and three or four spaced and weakly developed ventromedian supplements beyond the range of the spicules. Molecular data obtained for S. ciliatum sp. n. and the derived evolutionary tree show a close phylogenetic relationship with other species of the genus.

Three new species of Russulasection Ingratae, found in Guizhou and Jiangsu Provinces, southern China, are proposed: R. straminella, R. subpectinatoides and R. succinea. Photographs, line drawings and detailed morphological descriptions for these species are provided with comparisons against closely-related taxa. Phylogenetic analysis of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region supported the recognition of these specimens as new species. Additionally, R. indocatillus is reported for the first time from China and morphological and phylogenetic data are provided for the Chinese specimens.

AbstractWhat has previously been referred to in the literature as the African white rice borer Maliarpha separatella, is a complex of three closely related stemborers. These are described and the genus revised. The genera Biafra Ragonot and Ethitropa Hampson are synonymized with Maliarpha Ragonot. All primary types available have been examined. The revised genus Maliarpha is a monophyletic group defined by the apomorphic, tri-lobed form of the male gnathos. Six species of Maliarpha are treated, of which brunnella, fuscicostella and longisignumella are described as new. The species Biafra rhodinella (Ragonot), Singhalia haemocharis (Meyrick), Ethiotropa phromerella (Hampson) and Biafra taxiarcha Meyrick are synonymized with Maliarpha concinnella (Ragonot), and Biafra concinnella Ragonot and Saluria rosella (Hampson) are recombined with Maliarpha. The adult moths are illustrated and line drawings of the genitalia are provided for all species.

Leccinum is one of the most important groups of boletes. Most species in this genus are ectomycorrhizal symbionts of various plants, and some of them are well-known edible mushrooms, making it an exceptionally important group ecologically and economically. The scientific problems related to this genus include that the identification of species in this genus from China need to be verified, especially those referring to European or North American species, and knowledge of the phylogeny and diversity of the species from China is limited. In this study, we conducted multi-locus (nrLSU, tef1-α, rpb2) and single-locus (ITS) phylogenetic investigations and morphological observisions of Leccinum from China, Europe and North America. Nine Leccinum species from China, including three new species, namely L. album, L.parascabrum and L.pseudoborneense, were revealed and described. Leccinum album is morphologically characterized by the white basidioma, the white hymenophore staining indistinct greenish blue when injured, and the white context not changing color in pileus but staining distinct greenish blue in the base of the stipe when injured. Leccinumparascabrum is characterized by the initially reddish brown to chestnut-brown and then pale brownish to brown pileus, the white to pallid and then light brown hymenophore lacking color change when injured, and the white context lacking color change in pileus but staining greenish blue in the base of the stipe when injured. Leccinumpseudoborneense is characterized by the pale brown to dark brown pileus, the initially white and then brown hymenophore lacking color change when injured, and the white context in pileus and stipe lacking color change in pileus but staining blue in stipe when bruised. Color photos of fresh basidiomata, line drawings of microscopic features and detailed descriptions of the new species are presented.

Abstract The systematic position of the enigmatic genus Squamanita (Agaricales, Basidiomycota) is largely unknown. Together with Cystoderma and Phaeolepiota, they were categorized as belonging in the tribe Cystodermateae. In this study, with newly generated sequences of the type species of the genus Squamanita, namely S. schreieri, and sequences of a few species of Cystodermateae, the phylogeny of this “tribe” is reinvestigated with a concatenated (28S-5.8S-18S) dataset. Our study reveals that Squamanita and Phaeolepiota-Cystoderma are indeed sister groups with moderate statistic support (MLBS/PP = 80/1), and Squamanita is a monophyletic clade with highly statistic support (MLBS/PP = 92/1). The family name Squamanitaceae is resurrected and emended to accommodate the three genera. Meanwhile, another concatenated (ITS-28S-18S) dataset is used to investigate the phylogenetic relationship and species delimitation in Squamanita. Our data indicated that “S. umbonata” from North America, Europe, East Asia, and Central America harbors a complex of species, and species of Squamanita can parasitize species of Amanita, besides other fungal species. Squamanita mira parasitizes A. kitamagotake (A. sect. Caesareae), while S. orientalis and S. sororcula are parasites of species belonging to the A. sepiacea complex (A. sect. Validae). “Squamanita umbonata” from Italy occurs on A. excelsa (A. sect. Validae). Three new species of Squamanita from East Asia, viz. S. mira, S. orientalis and S. sororcula are documented with morphological, multi-genes phylogenetic, ecological data, line drawings, and photographs and compared with similar species.

The stonefly family Perlidae has successfully invaded tropical Southeast Asian streams. In this paper, three new species of Neoperla Needham, N. sungi, sp. nov., N. tamdao, sp. nov., and N. yentu, sp. nov., are described from tropical Vietnam with line drawings of key characters. A brief historical review of investigations and trends in tropical Southeast Asian Perlidae diversity, including a species checklist, is provided.

Three new species of the subgenus Ocypus s. str. of the genus Ocypus Leach, 1819 are described from South China: Ocypus (s. str.) liui sp. nov., Ocypus (s. str.) aglaosemanticus sp. nov. and Ocypus (s. str.) pterosemanticus sp. nov. Three new species of Russulaceae, Lactifluus umbonatus and Lactifluus indicus belonging to Lf. subg. Gerardii and Lactarius keralensis belonging to L. subg. Piperites, are described from Kerala State, India. Comprehensive descriptions, photographs, line drawings and comparisons with phenetically similar and phylogenetically related species are given. Nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer regions (ITS) of the three species were sequenced and analyzed. In addition, nuclear ribosomal large subunit (nLSU) gene of Lactifluus indicus was sequenced and the sequence was used in BLASTn search to find similar sequences. Maximum likelihood (ML) analysis based on the ITS sequences confirmed both the novelty of these species and their placement within their respective genera. The discovery of Lactifluus umbonatus and Lf. indicus represent the first report of novel species belonging to Lf. subg. Gerardii from India. Lactifluus indicus represents the second record of a pleurotoid Lactifluus species from India.

Three new species of the genus Mimetus Hentz, 1832 are described and named as M. bucerus sp. nov. (♂), M. lingbaoshanensis sp. nov. (♂♀) and M. yinae sp. nov. (♂♀). Detailed morphological descriptions, photos of the body and copulatory organs, line drawings of copulatory organs, as well as the distribution maps are provided.

Abstract— Three new species of Justicia (Acanthaceae), J. montealegrensis, J. multiglandulosa, and J. paraensis from the Brazilian Amazon, discovered during the preparation of a taxonomic treatment of genus for the state of Pará, are herein described and illustrated. Their geographic distribution, habitat, preliminary conservation status, taxonomic comments, line drawings, photo plates, and comparison of diagnostic morphological characters with those of similar taxa are also provided.
