To obtain qualified logging while drilling (LWD) data, a new acoustic LWD tool was designed. Its overall design is introduced here, including the physical construction, electronic structure, and operation flowchart. Thereafter, core technologies adopted in this tool are presented, such as dominant exciting wave bands of dipole source, a sine wave pulse excitation circuit, broadband impedance matching, and an intellectualized active reception transducer. Lastly, we tested this tool in the azimuthal anisotropy module well, calibration well, and normal well, working in the model of the cable, sliding eye, and logging while drilling. Experiments showed that the core technologies achieved ideal results and that the LWD tool obtained qualified data.

The development of highly advanced computer simulation software packages has enabled design engineers to more effectively integrate safety features into their designs. Designs can be tested long before any physical construction ever begins. This saves money, allowing more extensive testing to be performed, and it also saves time, expediting the process of moving concept to reality. In the automotive industry, such software can be especially useful, since computer simulations can be run over and over again, making it possible to observe the effects of adjusting single variables in dynamic situations. This has opened the door for testing of non-typical occupants. Restraints and safety devices are no longer designed to suit the needs of the average person; they can be tailored to account for all body types, or even for the disabled.

This is a case study of the social and physical construction of an ‘Irish’ community in an English town. It asks how or why members of this community migrated and how they construct contemporary images of ‘home’. The article draws on semi-structured interviews and conversations with members of the contemporary Irish community in Huddersfield, including Irish-born and second-generation Irish respondents. We find that their sense of Irish identity is complex, encompassing the totality of social experience, much of which is influenced by often competing interpretations of social and political relationships and understandings of history. What constitutes Irish identity in Huddersfield is determined not just by these factors, but also by the ways in which individuals are socialised as members of different families, neighbourhoods, workplace or other social interest groups.

Our goal is to develop biped humanoid robots capable of working stably in a human living and working space, with a focus on their physical construction and motion control. At the first stage, we have developed a human-like biped robot, WABIAN (WAseda BIped humANoid), which has a thirty-five mechanical degrees of freedom. Its height is 1.66 [m] and its weight 107.4 [kg]. In this paper, a moment compensation method is described for stability, which is based on the motion of its head, legs and arms. Also, a follow walking method is proposed which is based on a pattern switching technique. By a combination of both methods, the biped robot is able to perform dynamic stamping, walking forward and backward in a continuous time while someone is pushing or pulling its hand in such a way. Using WABIAN, human-fellow walking experiments are conducted, and the effectiveness of the methods are verified.

Este estudo tem viés historiográfico e o objeto de análise é a Fundação Escola Técnica Liberato Salzano Vieira da Cunha localizada no município de Novo Hamburgo/RS. Each brain enlivens a body in interaction with the social and physical environment. Peter Zumthor’s Therme at Vals exemplifies the interplay of interior with surroundings, and ways the actions of users fuse with their multimodal experience. The action–perception cycle includes both practical and contemplative actions. The author analyzes what Louis Sullivan meant by “form ever follows function,” but more often talks of aesthetics and utility. Not only are action, perception, and emotion intertwined, but so are remembering and imagination. Architectural design leads to the physical construction of buildings—but much of what our brains achieve can be seen as a form of mental construction. A first look at neuroscience offers schema theory as a bridge from cognitive processes to neural circuitry. Some architects fear that neuroscience will strip the architect of any creativity. In counterpoint, two-way reduction explores how neuroscience can “dissect” phenomenology by showing how first-person experiences arise from melding diverse subconscious processes. This raises the possibility that neuroscience can extend the effectiveness of architectural design by showing how different aspects of a building may affect human experience in ways that are not apparent to self-reflection.

The ever increasing development of portable electronics leads to a higher demand for compact and reliable power sources. Significant resources are being presently dedicated to the study of micro machined turbines, because of their remarkable power density that suggests that the generation of about 100–300 W with a total device weight of few hundreds grams and a fuel mass flow rate of few grams per second may be feasible in the short range. In this paper a possible configuration of such a nano-GT set is considered, which was defined on the basis of previous thermo-fluid dynamic analysis: the results of a preliminary design study, including some cold-run tests, are reported in this paper. The layout of the device was finalized on the basis of both a CFD and a FEM analysis that identified the “optimal” blade shape, shaft size and rotors arrangements under the point of view of the energy efficiency and of thermo-mechanical material stresses, Some of the problems deriving by the physical construction and preliminary testing of the prototype are analyzed and discussed.

Existing homes for senior population may not be safe because many injuries occur due to poor accessibility and design compatibility. Thus, Universal Design (UD) becomes more relevant, especially if it incorporates the principles of sustainability. Yet, adopting houses of this type requires detailed evaluation of their costs and benefits in a simple and efficient manner. The Building Information Modeling (BIM) concept enables engineers to design and create virtual models permitting the visualization and evaluation of design alternatives before physical construction. The tools used to create BIM models lack detail information about UD principles. This paper presents a methodology that integrates BIM, UD and sustainability to attain sustainable universal houses for Canadians. The goal of this model is to simplify the process of creating sustainable universal houses in 3D and to evaluate the costs and benefits to stakeholders at the conceptual stage of the life of the houses.
