New combinations for two species of Galium (Rubiaceae) from southern Brazil

In order to update accurately the list of Galium species in the Brazilian Flora Checklist, it is necessary to propose some new combinations. For these species, the geographic distribution is noted, along with comments on morphological features, and discussion on their relationship with other taxa.

A new species of Specklinia with a repent growth habit and minute purple flowers is described and illustrated. The new species is distinguished from Specklinia wrightii based on its morphological and molecular distinctness from that species. The phylogenetic placement of the new species is provided based on an nrITS tree. The species described here represents the first new orchid to be described from material originating from the Parc National Naturel Macaya in six years. New combinations are made in Acianthera for species of Kraenzlinella and Pleurothallis subgen. Antilla embedded within the genus. In particular Kraenzlinella rinkei is provided as a new synonym for Specklinia montezumae and Specklinia simpliciflora is transferred to Acianthera sect. Antilla based on morphology and geographic distribution.

Dendrorchis retrobiloba Volonterio & Ponce de León, 2005 was first described from the swim bladder of Astyanax fasciatus (Cuvier, 1819) from Montevideo, Uruguay. In this study, we necropsied specimens of A. aff. fasciatus collected from Lake Guaíba, in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, for the analysis of their helminths. The digeneans were identified as D. retrobiloba by their elongated body, oral sucker longer than ventral sucker, and 2 posterior lobes. This is the first report of D. retrobiloba in A. aff. fasciatus from Lake Guaíba and extends the known geographic distribution of this parasite.

Abstract Dacrymycetes has four families and 13 genera, few of them with molecular data available and then usually polyphyletic in phylogenetic analyses. Dacrymyces Nees is one of the polyphyletic genera in Dacrymycetes and it was introduced to accommodate one species, D. stillatus Nees. The morphological features of the genus are a homogeneous composition of the intra-structure and an amphigenous or superior hymenium. In this study, we included Neotropical specimens in the phylogeny of the Dacrymycetes and Dacrymyces s.s. is emended to include species with resupinate basidiomata, unilateral hymenium and heterogeneous context. In this new delimitation, the new species Dacrymyces flavobrunneus is described using morphological and molecular data and three new combinations (D. ceraceus comb. nov., D. maxidorii comb. nov. and D. spathularia comb. nov.) are proposed based on DNA analyses.

Allometric models embedding independent variables such as diameter at breast height (d) and total height (h) are useful tools to predict the biomass of individual trees. Models for tropical forests are often constructed based on datasets composed of species with different morphological features and architectural models. It is reasonable to expect, however, that species-specific models may reduce uncertainties in biomass predictions, especially for palms, tree ferns, and trees with peculiar morphological features, such as stilt roots and hollow trunks. In this sense, three species with wide geographical distribution in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest were sampled, namely Euterpe edulis Mart., Cyathea delgadii Sternb., and Cecropia glaziovii Snethl., with the aim to (i) quantify their aboveground biomass (AGB), (ii) evaluate the AGB distribution in different plant compartments, (iii) fit species-specific models for predicting AGB at the individual level, and (iv) assess the performance of specific and generic models available in the literature to predict the AGB of individuals of these species. The compartment stem represented, on average, ∼74% of the total AGB of E. edulis individuals; in turn, the caudex compartment of C. delgadii represented, on average, ∼87% of the total AGB, while the trunk compartment of C. glaziovii represented, on average, ∼74%. Among the fitted models, the power model [Formula: see text] showed the best performance for E. edulis and C. delgadii. In turn, the asymptotic logistic model [Formula: see text], where dc is the diameter above the upper stilt root, presented the best performance for C. glaziovii. The variable h appeared as the most important predictor of AGB of E. edulis and C. delgadii; in contrast, the stem and caudex mean basic specific gravities were not suitable predictors. The fitted species-specific models outperformed the specific and generic models selected from the literature. They may, therefore, contribute to the reduction of uncertainties in AGB estimates. In addition, the results support evidence that specific models may be necessary for species with different growth forms and (or) peculiar morphological features, especially those with great abundance and wide geographic distribution.

Phalloceros spiloura Lucinda, 2008 is known from the coastal drainages of Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina States, Iguaçu and Uruguai river basins. Its geographic distribution is herein extended to a new basin, the Laguna dos Patos system, an isolated costal drainage from Southern Brazil.

Pherania giupponii sp. nov. is herein described from a coastal island in Santa Catarina state, southern Brazil. The genus Pherania Strand, 1942, was hitherto monotypic and the type species, Pherania pygmaea (Sørensen, 1932), is known from the nearby mainland. A new diagnosis is given to Pherania and the geographic distribution of the two species is illustrated on a map.

In the present study we report new records of the anurans Hypsiboas curupi, Scinax littoralis, Dendropsophus elegans, and Crossodactylus schmidti for the state of Santa Catarina. These records expand the geographic distribution currently known for these species and contribute for the knowledge of the southern Brazilian anuran fauna.

The main character distinguishing Minibiotus from Macrobiotus is the presence of peribuccal papulae instead of lamellae. However, most Minibiotus species also share a set of characters of the bucco-pharyngeal apparatus. This set is defined by ten morphological features (the first seven common to all species, the last three to most of them): antero-ventral mouth (1), teeth in oral cavity absent or strongly reduced (2), a rigid and narrow buccal tube (3), buccal tube wall thickened below the point of insertion of stylet supports (4), stylet supports inserted at considerable distance from the posterior end of the buccal tube (5), short ventral lamina (6), short macroplacoid row length (7), a double curvature of the buccal tube (8), first macroplacoid situated very close to the pharyngeal apophysis (9) and three almost rounded macroplacoids (10). We examined the original descriptions and/or the type material of several species belonging to the genus Macrobiotus that seemed to present this set of characters. It was concluded that several species should be transferred from Macrobiotus to Minibiotus. The following new combinations are proposed: Minibiotus subintermedius (Ramazzotti, 1962) comb. n., Minibiotus pustulatus (Ramazzotti, 1959) comb. n., Minibiotus julietae (de Barros, 1942) comb. n., Minibiotus marcusi (de Barros, 1942) comb. n., Minibiotus granatai (Pardi, 1941) comb. n., Minibiotus allani (Murray, 1913) comb. n., Minibiotus crassidens (Murray, 1907) comb. n. and Minibiotus acontistus (de Barros, 1942) comb. n.. As a result of these new combinations, the genera Minibiotus and Macrobiotus appear to be more homogeneous, but their monophyly has not yet been demonstrated. Further data are necessary to better analyze the systematic position of Macrobiotus lazzaroi Maucci, 1986, Macrobiotus spertii Ramazzotti, 1957 and Macrobiotus striatus Mihelčič, 1949.

The Muscidae (Diptera) of the Neotropical Region are catalogued. 843 extant and 3 extinct species in 84 genera are listed together with their synonyms, giving a total of 1209 names. References are given to the original descriptions and the subsequent taxonomic, biological and applied literature, the location of types, and the geographic distribution. A comprehensive bibliography is provided. There are one new specific synonym, one new generic synonym, 15 new combinations, one new specific name, two new generic names, and one re-instated name (with a second one that is accepted here but is being formally re-instated in a paper listed as "in press").
