Systematic and taxomonic revaluation of four little known Asian agamid species, Calotes kingdonwardi Smith, 1935, Japalura kaulbacki Smith, 1937, Salea kakhienensis Anderson, 1879 and the monotypic genus Mictopholis Smith, 1935 (Reptilia: Agamidae)

The systematic status of many Asian Draconine agamids has long been in dispute. Herein, four such species, Mictopholis austeniana, Japalura kaulbacki, Calotes kingdonwardi and Salea kakhienensis are examined on the basis of external morphological characters. The monotypic genus Mictopholis was compared to other Asian Draconine genera and found to be indistinguishable from Pseudocalotes, with which it is here considered a synonym. Japalura kaulbacki is compared to other members of the genus Japalura as well as other similar species. Based on external morphology it is found to be separable from Japalura and conspecific with Calotes kingdonwardi, under which it is considered a junior subjective synonym. Salea kakhienensis is redefined morphologically based on nontype material and shown to represent a close member of this group. C. kingdonwardi is most similar to Salea kakhienensis both of which share a complement of characters with M. austeniana. The generic placement of S. kakhienensis relative to Salea, both with strongly overlapping synapomorphic characters is briefly discussed with respect to biogeographical implications that strongly support the exclusion of this species from the genus. Mictopholis austeniana, Calotes kingdonwardi and Salea kakhienensis are redescribed in detail and transferred to Pseudocalotes. The inclusion of these three species provides a generic range extension of approximately 800 km north-west of the previously considered range. The nomen Oriocalotes discolor is considered a primary objective synonym of Pseudocalotes kakhienensis new comb. and the systematic status of Calotes kingdonwardi bapoensis is briefly discussed.

The old genus Libitia Simon, 1879 of small Andean harvestmen is revisited. The monotypic genus Libitiella Roewer, 1947 is herein considered a junior subjective synonym of Libitia. Accordingly, Libitiella bipunctata (Sørensen, 1932) is restored to the combination Libitia bipunctata. The species Libitia cordata and Libitia bipunctata comb. nov. are redescribed and the new species Libitia gandalf sp. nov. and Libitia iguaque sp. nov. are herein described from Cordillera Oriental of Colombian Andes (Chingaza Natural Park and Iguaque Natural Park, respectively). The species Gonyleptes multimaculatus Wood 1869, currently under the synonymy of L. cordata, is revalidated and transferred to Paecilaemella Roewer, 1925 forming Paecilaemella multimaculata comb. nov., and the species Cynorta itacoaiensis H. Soares, 1970 is herein considered a junior subjective synonym of it. In addition, the second current species of the genus, Libitia fusca (Simon, 1879), is transferred to Metalibitia. Libitia is diagnosed based in genital and external morphology, an identification key of the four species and distribution maps are offered.

AbstractThe taxonomic status of Dendroctonus vitei Wood (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae) and Dendroctonus mexicanus Hopkins is supported by biological and morphological data. However, the differentiation of these species has been extremely difficult because most of the morphological characters have not been well illustrated and some of them are geographically variable. Seminal rod shape has been the only reliable characteristic to identify these species. The main purpose of this study was to look for new morphological characters for the identification of these species as well as to evaluate geographic variation of those previously reported characters in order to produce a comprehensive redescription of D. vitei. A total of 33 morphological characters from antenna, stridulatory apparatus, male and female genitalia, and external morphology were compared between the similar species D. vitei and D. mexicanus, and we identified five novel diagnostic characters and confirmed previously reported characters that differentiate these two species from each other and from other species in the Dendroctonus frontalis Zimmermann complex (sensu stricto). Furthermore, these characters and those of the seminal rod allowed us to re-evaluate some previously reported records for other species to broaden the known distribution of D. vitei.

The subfamily Acastinae contains a diverse group of barnacles that are obligate symbionts of sponges and alcyonacean and antipatharian corals. Integrating morphological and genetic (COI) data to compare against known species, this paper reports on nine species of sponge-inhabiting barnacles of the subfamily Acastinae, including three undescribed species (Acasta caveata sp. nov., Euacasta acutaflava sp. nov., and E. excoriatrix sp. nov.) and three species previously not recorded in Australian waters (A. sandwichi, Pectinoacasta cancellorum, and P. sculpturata). The new species are distinguished from similar species by a suite of morphological characters as well as genetic distances. A lectotype for Pectinoacasta cancellorum is designated. Sponge hosts were identified for all specimens where possible and are represented by 19 species from eight families and five orders.

AbstractPissodes approximatus Hopkins (1911) is a junior subjective synonym of P. nemorensis Germar (1824). The conspecificity of these entities, traditionally considered distinct based only on distribution and slight morphological differences, is corroborated here with comparative studies of ecology, behavior, and morphology. When pheromone-baited traps were deployed during the spring (May–June) and fall (November–December) in several localities to examine seasonal activity, southern populations (P. nemorensis sensu Hopkins) responded only in the fall and northern populations only in the spring, but a population in Virginia responded during both seasons. Laboratory studies found that individuals from five southern populations became reproductively mature under 16:8, 12:12, and 8:16 (L:D) photoperiods but weevils in a New York population did not mature under the 8:16 photoperiod. A two-species model based on strict seasonal isolation between northern and southern populations is rejected. Morphometrics revealed significant differences in six body dimensions and three morphometric ratios among 13 populations, but there was no geographic pattern of differences to suggest the existence of two species. Sexual dimorphism in rostrum length was most pronounced in southern populations but occurred in all five populations in which it was investigated. Examination of male and female genitalia revealed similar variation in northern and southern populations and conflicted with previously reported diagnostic differences. Our study and the results of earlier work lead us to conclude that the populations previously represented by the names P. nemorensis and P. approximatus comprise one widely distributed species and display intraspecific variation in life history and morphological characters.

Background – Ongoing studies of Brazilian Rubiaceae revealed an undescribed species of Amaioua endemic to Atlantic Forest (Restinga and Semideciduous forest) of the state of Bahia, which is here described and illustrated, and its morphological characters are discussed and compared with those of similar species. Methods – This study is based on examinations of herbarium specimens, samples preserved in 60% ethanol, field observations, and digital images. Herbarium specimens of the CAY, CEPEC, HBR, IBGE, K, MBM, NY, RB, U, UB, UFG, and US herbaria were directly studied. Additional images of herbarium specimens were studied online. Results – Amaioua longipedicellata Delprete & J.G.Jardim is here described, illustrated and compared with the two most similar species, i.e., A. glomerulata (Lam. ex Poir.) Delprete & C.H.Perss. and A. intermedia Mart. A table comparing the morphological characters of these three species, and an appendix with selected specimens studied of A. glomerulata and A. intermedia are included.

Two similar species of Sphaerocoryphe, Sphaerocoryphe gemina sp.nov. and Sphaerocoryphe longispina sp.nov., from the Edinburg Formation (Blackriveran) of northwest Virginia are described. The most conspicuous differences lie in the pygidia. The protaspis closely resembles that of Ceraurinella; transitory pygidia are allocated to degrees one to eight, and the first appearance of the great spines provides a useful marker. Two ontogenetic series can be recognized, culminating in the two adult morphologies, and ruling out the possibility of a single dimorphic species. There are two profixigenal spines in meraspid cranidia up to 2.5 mm in sagittal length, one pair in larger cranidia of both species. The smallest hypostome possesses two lateral spines, later reduced to one. Hemisphaerocoryphe Reed is considered a junior subjective synonym of Sphaerocoryphe Angelin. The 29 named species are compared.

Urochordeumatidae Silvestri, 1909 includes a single species, Urochordeuma bumpusi Silvestri, 1909, with U. porona Chamberlin, 1941 as a new junior subjective synonym. The family Urochordeumatidae is removed from the superfamily Caseyoidea and transferred to the superfamily Striarioidea. The species is known only from four counties in Washington State in the North Cascades: Pierce, King, Thurston and Whatcom. The occurrence of U. bumpusi from Whatcom County is a significant range extension.

The fossil record of the burrowing lobster Axius is reviewed. A diagnosis based on the characters with preservation potential is supplied. Plioaxius lineadactylus Fraaije et al., 2011, from the Pliocene of Belgium and the Netherlands is considered congeneric with the type species of Axius. As a consequence, Plioaxius is considered a junior subjective synonym of Axius. A newly described species, Axius hofstedtae from the late Oligocene of Denmark is considered the oldest unequivocal representative of Axius. Both fossil species, A. hofstedtae n. sp. and A. lineadactylus n. comb., share numerous morphological characters with extant Axius stirhynchus. Scarcity of the Cenozoic Axiidae is ascribed to lack of study of the fossil record of this group rather than to low fossilization potential of its representatives. A preliminary scenario of the migration of Axius based on the scarce fossil record suggests the origin in the Western Tethys and subsequent dispersal westward into the West Atlantic and eastward into the West Pacific.

Sigambra hanaokai (Kitamori 1960), originally described from Japan, was regarded as a junior synonym of S. tentaculata (Treadwell 1941), described from the Northwestern Atlantic Ocean. We studied Japanese materials and compared them with a recent redescription of S. tentaculata and with S. phuketensis Licher and Westheide, 1997, another similar species. The validity of S. hanaokai is confirmed. In order to avoid any further confusion, we redescribe the species based on topotype specimens collected in Hiroshima, Seto Inland Sea, Japan, the type locality of the species. Additionally, we emphasize the differences between S. hanaokai and S. phuketensis, particularly in regard to the relative length of the median antenna. Lastly, we summarize the recent systematic status of all species of the genus, and provide a table summarizing taxonomic characters.
