Enhancing the response to visible light and inhibiting recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes is a key point for strongly improved self-cleaning performances of TiO2 self-cleaning films. In this work, TiO2 thin film doping with three different ions (Fe3+, Al3+, Ce3+) on glass substrate respectively by sol–gel method to explore the effect of ions on self-cleaning performance of TiO2 thin films. All the prepared samples are characterized by XRD, SEM, UV-Vis and water contact angle tester. Moreover, the self-cleaning mechanism of doping TiO2 thin film is discussed. The water contact angle of TiO2 thin film doping with 9% Fe (molar ratio), 5% Ce and 5% Al are reach at 0°, respectively. In comparison with the water contact angle of pure TiO2 thin film (2.5°), TiO2 thin film doping with metal ions exhibit better self-cleaning property.

Modification has been made to TiO2 thin film to improve the wettability and the absorption of light. The sol-gel spin coating method was successfully used to synthesize GO/TiO2 thin films using a titanium (IV) isopropoxide (TTIP) as a precursor. Different amounts of polyethylene glycol (PEG) (20 to 100 mg) were added into the parent sol solution to improve the optical properties and wettability of the GO/TiO2 thin film. The effect of different amounts of PEG was characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD) for the phase composition, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) for microstructure observation, atomic force microscopy (AFM) for the surface topography, ultraviolet–visible spectrophotometry (UV-VIS) for the optical properties and wettability of the thin films by measuring the water contact angle. The XRD analysis showed the amorphous phase. The SEM and AFM images revealed that the particles were less agglomerated and surface roughness increases from 1.21 × 102 to 2.63 × 102 nm when the amount of PEG increased. The wettability analysis results show that the water contact angle of the thin film decreased to 27.52° with the increase of PEG to 80 mg which indicated that the thin film has hydrophilic properties. The optical properties also improved significantly, where the light absorbance wavelength became wider and the band gap was reduced from 3.31 to 2.82 eV with the presence of PEG.

Optically transparent hydrophobic inorganic-organic hybrid sols was obtained employing Tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS), Methyltriethoxysilane (MTES), and Heptadecafluoro-1, 1, 2, 2-tetradecyl)trimethoxysilane (FAS), with nitric acid as catalyst. Hybrid coating was dip coated on glass slides. The results showed that the water contact angle of MTES modified SiO2 coating was only 105° . As the weight ratio FAS varied from 0 to 8 wt.%, the water contact angle reached as high as 116.5°. The coated glass presented transmittance of 92%, 2% higher than the non-coated ones. The increase in transmittance suggested an antireflective effect of the hybrid coating. With further SEM characterization of the surface morphology, we finally obtained the optimized optically transparent hydrophobic hybrid coating with the MTES/TEOS_as 1/1(molar ratio) and FAS as 2 wt.%.

To achieve self-cleaning at a low maintenance cost, we investigated the possibility of obtaining a sustainable hydrophilic surface of TiO2 thin film. As the hydrophilicity of TiO2 films fabricated by FTS has not yet been studied, we deposited TiOx using FTS, and then TiO2 was formed through additional treatment. Hydrophilic surfaces were obtained by thermoinduced and photoinduced methods. UV irradiation led to the conversion of Ti4+ to Ti3+ in the lattice structure and an increase in the number of OH groups on the surface, and annealing induced the formation of Ti3+ defect sites, as well as organic degradation and changes in the crystal structure. Through the annealing process, the water contact angle of as-deposited film was decreased from 78.7° to 35.7°, and crystallinity changed from amorphous to anatase. These changes contributed to the formation of a hydrophilic surface and reduced the water contact angle by up to 10.8°. After the formation of a hydrophilic surface through annealing and UV irradiation, the sample returned to its original state. We confirmed that the water contact angle of the returned sample was decreased through exposure to sunlight; it reduced the water contact angle of the returned sample by 15.2°. Thus, the results revealed that the crystallinity influences the hydrophilicity and its sustainability for TiO2 films under sunlight.

TiO2, SiO2 and their hybrid nanocoatings are prepared on inherent flame retardant textile substrates from titanium(IV)iso-proproxide (TTIP) and tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) precursors using a sol–gel process followed by hydrothermal treatment. The coated samples are further functionalized by hexadecyltrimethoxysilane (HDTMS) to impart superhydrophobicity. Sample characterization of the nanosols, nanoparticles and coated samples are investigated using, X-ray diffractometer, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, UV-Vis spectroscopy, contact angle measurement. Stain degradation test under mild UV irradiation shows almost 54% degradation of coffee stain within 4 hours measured by Spectrophotometer. UV-Vis Absorption Spectroscopy demonstrates complete degradation of methyl orange colorant within 3 hours. Hybrid nanosol coated and HDTMS modified inherent flame retardant polyester surfaces show apparent water contact angle as ~145°, which is much closer to proximity of superhydrophobic surfaces. Thus, the novelty of present work is, by using sol–gel technique, a bi-functional textile surface has been developed which qualifies the very specific requirements of protective clothing like self-cleaning property (imparted by TiO2 nanoparticles) and superhydrophobicity (imparted by SiO2 nanoparticles and further surface modification by HDTMS), which are entirely contradictory in nature, in a single fabric itself. Thus developed textile surfaces also possess the other attributes of protective clothing like flame retardancy and air permeability.

In this study, porous architectures with controllable morphologies on Aluminum foils were fabricated by a simple solution method using zinc nitrate hexahydrate and hexamethylenetetramine as reactants. Unlike works reported previously, we show that the porous architectures on the surface of Aluminum foils can be adjusted by controlling the molar ratio and total concentration of reactants, which is proved to be of importance in tailoring the wettability of the surface. It is found that by adjusting the space of pores and the thickness of nanoslices, the water contact angle of the obtained surface can change from hydrophobic to superhydrophobic.

A robust superhydrophobic organosilica sol-gel-based coating on a cotton fabric substrate was successfully fabricated via a cost-effective one-step method. The coating was prepared by modification of silica nanoparticles with siloxane having long alkyl chain that allow to reduce surface energy. The coating on cotton fabric exhibited water contact angle of 151.6°. The surface morphology was evaluated by scanning electron microscopy, and surface chemical composition was measured with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Results showed the enhanced superhydrophobicity that was attributed to the synergistic effect of roughness created by the random distribution of silica nanoparticles and the low surface energy imparted of long-chain alkane siloxane. In addition, the coating also showed excellent durability against washing treatments. Even after washed for 30 times, the specimen still had a water contact angle of 130°, indicating an obvious water-repellent property. With this outstanding property, the robust superhydrophobic coating exhibited a prospective application in textiles and plastics.

Titanium dioxide thin film has been successfully synthesized deposited on ITO glass substrates by the sol–gel dip-coating method using freeze drying technique. The precursor and TiO2 film were characterized using XRD, AFM and UV-vis absorption spectra analysis technologies. The XRD result demonstrates that the TiO2 film is well crystallized and consists of anatase phase only with (101) plane. The morphology of the nanoparticles of TiO2 thin film is spherical shape with grain size of 30.1 nm in average diameter and the surface of the TiO2 film is smooth. There is a strong wide UV absorption band around 387 nm and the calculated band gap (Eg) value of the TiO2 thin film is about 3.18 eV. The water contact angles for the thin film was only about 12°. The freeze drying-assisted sol-gel technique offers a novel process route in treating hydrophilic glasses for self-cleaning building materials and would be widely application for building energy saving.
