Abstract Anisotropic recursive filters are implemented within a three-dimensional variational data assimilation (3DVAR) framework to efficiently model the effect of flow-dependent background error covariance. The background error covariance is based on an estimated error field and on the idea of Riishøjgaard. In the anisotropic case, the background error pattern can be stretched or flattened in directions oblique to the alignment of the grid coordinates and is constructed by applying, at each point, six recursive filters along six directions corresponding, in general, to a special configuration of oblique lines of the grid. The recursive filters are much more efficient than corresponding explicit filters used in an earlier study and are therefore more suitable for real-time numerical weather prediction. A set of analysis experiments are conducted at a mesoscale resolution to examine the effectiveness of the 3DVAR system in analyzing simulated global positioning system (GPS) slant-path water vapor observations from ground-based GPS receivers and observations from collocated surface stations. It is shown that the analyses produced with recursive filters are at least as good as those with corresponding explicit filters. In some cases, the recursive filters actually perform better. The impact of flow-dependent background errors modeled using the anisotropic recursive filters is also examined. The use of anisotropic filters improves the analysis, especially in terms of finescale structures. The analysis system is found to be effective in the presence of typical observational errors. The sensitivity of isotropic and anisotropic recursive-filter analyses to the decorrelation scales is also examined systematically.

AbstractThe background error covariance (B) behaves differently and needs to be carefully defined in cloudy areas due to larger uncertainties caused by models’ inability to correctly represent complex physical processes. This study proposes a new cloud-dependent B strategy by adaptively adjusting the hydrometeor-included B in the cloudy areas according to the cloud index (CI) derived from the satellite-based cloud products. The adjustment coefficient is determined by comparing the error statistics of B for the clear and cloudy areas based on the two-dimensional geographical masks. The comparison highlights the larger forecast errors and manifests the necessity of using appropriate B in cloudy areas. The cloud-dependent B is then evaluated by a series of single observation tests and three-week cycling assimilation and forecasting experiments. The single observation experiments confirm that the cloud-dependent B allows cloud dependency for the multivariate analysis increments and alleviates the discontinuities at the cloud mask borders by treating the CI as an exponent. The impact study on regional numerical weather prediction (NWP) demonstrates that the application of the cloud-dependent B reduces analyses and forecasts bias and increases precipitation forecast skills. Diagnostics of a heavy rainfall case indicate that the application of the cloud-dependent B enhances the moisture, wind, and hydrometeors analyses and forecasts, resulting in more accurate forecasts of accumulated precipitation. The cloud-dependent piecewise analysis scheme proposed herein is extensible, and a more precise definition of CI can improve the analysis, which deserves future investigation.

Abstract This study introduces an experimental regional assimilation configuration for a 4D ensemble–variational (4D-EnVar) deterministic weather prediction system. A total of 16 assimilation experiments covering July 2014 are presented to assess both experimental regional climatological background error covariances and updates in the treatment of flow-dependent error covariances. The regional climatological background error covariances are estimated using statistical correlations between variables instead of using balance operators. These error covariance estimates allow the analyses to fit more closely with the assimilated observations than when using the lower-resolution global background error covariances (due to shorter correlation scales), and the ensuing forecasts are significantly improved. The use of ensemble-based background error covariances is also improved by reducing vertical and horizontal localization length scales for the flow-dependent background error covariance component. Also, reducing the number of ensemble members employed in the deterministic analysis (from 256 to 128) reduced computational costs by half without degrading the accuracy of analyses and forecasts. The impact of the relative contributions of the climatological and flow-dependent background error covariance components is also examined. Results show that the experimental regional system benefits from giving a lower (higher) weight to climatological (flow-dependent) error covariances. When compared with the operational assimilation configuration of the continental prediction system, the proposed modifications to the background error covariances improve both surface and upper-air RMSE scores by nearly 1%. Still, the use of a higher-resolution ensemble to estimate flow-dependent background error covariances does not yet provide added value, although it is expected to allow for a better use of dense observations in the future.

The assimilation of microwave and infrared (IR) radiance satellite observations within numerical weather prediction (NWP) models have been an important component in the effort of improving the accuracy of analysis and forecast. Such capabilities were implemented during the development of the high-resolution Copernicus European Regional Reanalysis (CERRA), funded by the Copernicus Climate Change Services (C3S). The CERRA system couples the deterministic system with the ensemble data assimilation to provide periodic updates of the background error covariance matrix. Several key factors for the assimilation of radiances were investigated, including appropriate use of variational bias correction (VARBC), surface-sensitive AMSU-A observations and observation error correlation. Twenty-one-day impact studies during the summer and winter seasons were conducted. Generally, the assimilation of radiances has a small impact on the analysis, while greater impacts are observed on short-range (12 and 24-h) forecasts with an error reduction of 1–2% for the mid and high troposphere. Although, the current configuration provided less accurate forecasts from 09 and 18 UTC analysis times. With the increased thinning distances and the rejection of IASI observation over land, the errors in the analyses and 3 h forecasts on geopotential height were reduced up to 2%.

Abstract Ensemble-based data assimilation (EDA) has been used for tropical cyclone (TC) analysis and prediction with some success. However, the TC position spread determines the structure of the TC-related background error covariance and affects the performance of EDA. With an idealized experiment and a real TC case study, it is demonstrated that observations in the core region cannot be optimally assimilated when the TC position spread is large. To minimize the negative impact from large position uncertainty, a TC-centered EDA approach is implemented in the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) Model–local ensemble transform Kalman filter (WRF-LETKF) assimilation system. The impact of TC-centered EDA on TC analysis and prediction of Typhoon Fanapi (2010) is evaluated. Using WRF Model nested grids with 4-km grid spacing in the innermost domain, the focus is on EDA using dropsonde data from the Impact of Typhoons on the Ocean in the Pacific field campaign. The results show that the TC structure in the background mean state is improved and that unrealistically large ensemble spread can be alleviated. The characteristic horizontal scale in the background error covariance is smaller and narrower compared to those derived from the conventional EDA approach. Storm-scale corrections are improved using dropsonde data, which is more favorable for TC development. The analysis using the TC-centered EDA is in better agreement with independent observations. The improved analysis ameliorates model shock and improves the track forecast during the first 12 h and landfall at 72 h. The impact on intensity prediction is mixed with a better minimum sea level pressure and overestimated peak winds.

Abstract. Extraction of wind and temperature information from stratospheric ozone assimilation is examined within the context of the Navy Global Environmental Model (NAVGEM) hybrid 4-D variational assimilation (4D-Var) data assimilation (DA) system. Ozone can improve the wind and temperature through two different DA mechanisms: (1) through the “flow-of-the-day” ensemble background error covariance that is blended together with the static background error covariance and (2) via the ozone continuity equation in the tangent linear model and adjoint used for minimizing the cost function. All experiments assimilate actual conventional data in order to maintain a similar realistic troposphere. In the stratosphere, the experiments assimilate simulated ozone and/or radiance observations in various combinations. The simulated observations are constructed for a case study based on a 16-day cycling truth experiment (TE), which is an analysis with no stratospheric observations. The impact of ozone on the analysis is evaluated by comparing the experiments to the TE for the last 6 days, allowing for a 10-day spin-up. Ozone assimilation benefits the wind and temperature when data are of sufficient quality and frequency. For example, assimilation of perfect (no applied error) global hourly ozone data constrains the stratospheric wind and temperature to within ∼ 2 m s−1 and ∼ 1 K. This demonstrates that there is dynamical information in the ozone distribution that can potentially be used to improve the stratosphere. This is particularly important for the tropics, where radiance observations have difficulty constraining wind due to breakdown of geostrophic balance. Global ozone assimilation provides the largest benefit when the hybrid blending coefficient is an intermediate value (0.5 was used in this study), rather than 0.0 (no ensemble background error covariance) or 1.0 (no static background error covariance), which is consistent with other hybrid DA studies. When perfect global ozone is assimilated in addition to radiance observations, wind and temperature error decreases of up to ∼ 3 m s−1 and ∼ 1 K occur in the tropical upper stratosphere. Assimilation of noisy global ozone (2 % errors applied) results in error reductions of ∼ 1 m s−1 and ∼ 0.5 K in the tropics and slightly increased temperature errors in the Northern Hemisphere polar region. Reduction of the ozone sampling frequency also reduces the benefit of ozone throughout the stratosphere, with noisy polar-orbiting data having only minor impacts on wind and temperature when assimilated with radiances. An examination of ensemble cross-correlations between ozone and other variables shows that a single ozone observation behaves like a potential vorticity (PV) “charge”, or a monopole of PV, with rotation about a vertical axis and vertically oriented temperature dipole. Further understanding of this relationship may help in designing observation systems that would optimize the impact of ozone on the dynamics.

Abstract. The specification of state background error statistics is a key component of data assimilation since it affects the impact observations will have on the analysis. In the variational data assimilation approach, applied in geophysical sciences, the dimensions of the background error covariance matrix (B) are usually too large to be explicitly determined and B needs to be modeled. Recent efforts to include new variables in the analysis such as cloud parameters and chemical species have required the development of the code to GENerate the Background Errors (GEN_BE) version 2.0 for the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) community model. GEN_BE allows for a simpler, flexible, robust, and community-oriented framework that gathers methods used by some meteorological operational centers and researchers. We present the advantages of this new design for the data assimilation community by performing benchmarks of different modeling of B and showing some of the new features in data assimilation test cases. As data assimilation for clouds remains a challenge, we present a multivariate approach that includes hydrometeors in the control variables and new correlated errors. In addition, the GEN_BE v2.0 code is employed to diagnose error parameter statistics for chemical species, which shows that it is a tool flexible enough to implement new control variables. While the generation of the background errors statistics code was first developed for atmospheric research, the new version (GEN_BE v2.0) can be easily applied to other domains of science and chosen to diagnose and model B. Initially developed for variational data assimilation, the model of the B matrix may be useful for variational ensemble hybrid methods as well.

Abstract Hybrid ensemble–three-dimensional variational analysis schemes incorporate flow-dependent, ensemble-estimated background-error covariances into the three-dimensional variational data assimilation (3DVAR) framework. Typically the 3DVAR background-error covariance estimate is assumed to be stationary, nearly homogeneous, and isotropic. A hybrid scheme can be achieved by 1) directly replacing the background-error covariance term in the cost function by a linear combination of the original background-error covariance with the ensemble covariance or 2) through augmenting the state vector with another set of control variables preconditioned upon the square root of the ensemble covariance. These differently proposed hybrid schemes are proven to be equivalent. The latter framework may be a simpler way to incorporate ensemble information into operational 3DVAR schemes, where the preconditioning is performed with respect to the background term.

Abstract A four-dimensional ensemble-based variational data assimilation (4DEnVar) algorithm proposed in Part I of the 4DEnVar series (denoted En4DVar in Part I, but here we refer to it as 4DEnVar according to WMO conference recommendation to differentiate it from En4DVar algorithm using adjoint model) uses a flow-dependent background error covariance calculated from ensemble forecasts and performs 4DVar optimization based on an incremental approach and a preconditioning algorithm. In Part II, the authors evaluated 4DEnVar with observing system simulation experiments (OSSEs) using the Advanced Research Weather Research and Forecasting Model (ARW-WRF, hereafter WRF). The current study extends the 4DEnVar to assimilate real observations for a cyclone in the Antarctic and the Southern Ocean in October 2007. The authors performed an intercomparison of four different WRF variational approaches for the case, including three-dimensional variational data assimilation (3DVar), first guess at the appropriate time (FGAT), and ensemble-based three-dimensional (En3DVar) and four-dimensional (4DEnVar) variational data assimilations. It is found that all data assimilation approaches produce positive impacts in this case. Applying the flow-dependent background error covariance in En3DVar and 4DEnVar yields forecast skills superior to those with the homogeneous and isotropic background error covariance in 3DVar and FGAT. In addition, the authors carried out FGAT and 4DEnVar 3-day cycling and 72-h forecasts. The results show that 4DEnVar produces a better performance in the cyclone prediction. The inflation factor on 4DEnVar can effectively improve the 4DEnVar analysis. The authors also conducted a short period (10-day lifetime of the cyclone in the domain) of analysis/forecast intercomparison experiments using 4DEnVar, FGAT, and 3DVar. The 4DEnVar scheme demonstrates overall superior and robust performance.

Abstract A mesoscale ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF) for a regional model is often initialized from global analysis products and with initial ensemble perturbations constructed based on the background error covariance used in the three-dimensional variational data assimilation (3DVar) system. Because of the lack of proper mesoscale information, a long spinup period of typically a few days is required for the regional EnKF to reach its asymptotic level of accuracy, and thus, the impact of observations is limited during the EnKF spinup. For the case of typhoon assimilation, such spinup usually corresponds to the stages of generation and development of tropical cyclones, when observations are important but limited over open waters. To improve the analysis quality during the spinup, the “running in place” (RIP) method is implemented within the framework of the local ensemble transform Kalman filter (LETKF) coupled with the Weather Research and Forecasting model (WRF). Results from observing system simulation experiments (OSSEs) for a specific typhoon show that the RIP method is able to accelerate the analysis adjustment of the dynamical structures of the typhoon during the LETKF spinup, and improves both the accuracy of the mean state and the structure of the ensemble-based error covariance. These advantages of the RIP method are found not only in the inner-core structure of the typhoon but also identified in the environmental conditions. As a result, the LETKF-RIP analysis leads to better typhoon prediction, particularly in terms of both track and intensity.
