This article investigates the role of learning Jawi classical book as one of the important teaching and learning methods in Islamic sciences especially in the study of Islamic Jurisprudence in Malaysia. The method of using the classical Jawi texts has been in place in the Malay Archipelago since a long period of time. However, it is no longer becoming the primary teaching and learning methods nowadays. Thus, this study will look into the effects and significance of learning the classical Jawi texts in understanding the Islamic sciences, particularly the Islamic Jurisprudence. The analysis will also focus on the implementation of learning classical Jawi texts through the talaqqi (face to face) method in several academic faculties at the Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia. For this purpose, descriptive qualitative method is utilized as well as questionnaires and coupled with semi-structured interviews. The study concludes that the learning of classical Jawi texts through talaqqi method is extremely essential in Malaysia specifically to Shariah students. These texts are considered the main sources in the study of Islamic sciences in this region. The understanding of such primary sources in Islamic studies empowers students with well-grounded knowledge before they embark into the study of other modern discipline of knowledge. With such well-grounded knowledge students are able to withstand themselves from other influences which may affect their understanding of their religion. The tradition of studying of classical Jawi texts should be reintroduced to the Malay Muslim communities in Malaysia especially to the students at higher learning institutions in the country. Keywords: Islamic Turath; Islamic Education; Malay Civilizaton; Pondok System; Jawi Classical Book.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, higher learning institutions switched from the traditional face-to-face teaching method to online based teaching. Even though the country is facing crisis due to the pandemic, teaching can still be conducted through online platform. It offers flexibility to both students and academicians. However, online learning is believed to reduce the students’ motivation, performance and lead to mental health problems. To reduce these issues, this study was conducted to determine the impeding factors towards the effectiveness of online learning. The respondents consists of 267 social sciences students. Three impeding factors were discussed which are accessibility, social and academician capability factor. The descriptive findings determined that accessibility factor was the main impeding factor towards the effectiveness of online learning. Thus, the roles of government, university and telecommunication firm are important to reduce the issues of internet access, internet data cost and lack of technology devices. Consequently, the students’ motivation and performance during online learning can be enhanced.

Balaghah is one of the main components in Arabic literature and it is mandatory for every student of the Arabic language at any learning institution to learn it either as a major or minor subject, compulsory or elective. In addition, learning Balaghah is also a crucial element in the process of mastering the Arabic language. However, students’ inability to master this subject has become an issue due to the absence of a specific Balaghah module prepared for them. Therefore, this study aims to identify the features of a learning module for the Balaghah subject at the Institutes of Higher Learning in Malaysia, evaluate the effectiveness of the learning module, and propose features and framework of the module based on the research findings. The findings of the study show that students’ ability to master the knowledge of Balaghah is at a low level and this is due to the approach, strategy, and teaching method that is not so effective and suitable for students of Public Higher Learning Institutions. In line with that, a Balaghah module has to be developed and introduced in order to create coordination for this subject among the Institute of Higher Learning in Malaysia. This is because there are many Institutes of Higher Learning that do not have a specific module for the Balaghah subject. This directly creates a vacuum in the teaching of Balaghah itself. Besides that, an effective teaching approach has to be planned and reorganized so that the teaching and learning objective of Balaghah can be achieved.

The abrupt disruption of the traditional face-to-face language instruction due to the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic has forced many schools and higher learning institutions in Oman and around the globe to establish a virtual learning environment. This crisis-prompted remote learning has been a new experience for most teachers and students alike, a variable that may affect students' learning. Thus, it is significant to understand the students' experience with online teaching and learning. This study explicitly examines online teaching and learning as perceived by English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students of a higher learning institution in Oman. A total number of (112) undergraduate students in Oman acted as a data source by responding to a computer-assisted survey questionnaire. The survey focused on the following themes: overall first-time online language learning experience; online courses; online learning mode and attainment of graduate attributes; effectiveness of online teaching and delivery; utilization and usefulness of electronic learning devices; and e-learning language skills. The findings highlight the significance of exploring learners' online learning experience and its implications for planning, implementing, teaching, and assessing online language education.

Pendidikan terdampak dengan adanya peraturan LFH (learning from home) dan WFH (work from home). Education cannot be separated from the teaching and learning process because education is an official place to gain knowledge. The Industrial Revolution 4.0 and the 21st Century teaching trends make all teachers and educators have to update their teaching methods. The teaching process which is closely related to the teaching subject makes teachers and educators constantly learn more about technology in the teaching and learning process. Online learning is coming as a solution, and technology is an integral part of this new learning trend. Online learning has become very necessary in recent times due to the COVID-19 outbreak. Education is impacted by the existence of LFH (learning from home) and WFH (work from home) regulations. As a result, this situation forces teachers to conduct distance/online teaching which of course cannot be separated from the use of technology. Online learning requires suitable teaching materials and teaching materials that can be made through technology assistance. English teachers who teach at SMK Banjarbaru still lack information about the preparation of skill-based English teaching materials that use technology so that the existence of this community service activity is a step to provide assistance to teachers to be able to design appropriate teaching materials with the subject of skills-based vocational school students with the help of technology. The methods used for this training are first explaining about teaching material, second, practice to make teaching material which integrated with technology, and last, evaluation from the speaker to fix the teaching materials which is made by the participants. The participants for this community service are 35 English vocational high school teachers in Banjarbaru. The result of this community service was teaching materials which integrated with technology designed by the participants.

The implementation of Movement Control Order (MCO) to curb the spread of Covid-19 has various effects on the community, regardless of the field they are involved in. Enforcement order to stay at home has resulted  to the closure and restriction of all types of operations including the education sector. Due to the implementation of MCO, the teaching and learning activities that used to be conducted face-to-face have been completely replaced by online learning. This situation eventually has given some stressful impact and has caused difficulties to students of higher learning institutions to continue their studies virtually. Various factors have been found as stressors among undergraduate students. It is hoped that this study would help to find effective ways to reduce stress among undergraduate students.

The Council of Legal Education, which is the regulatory body for the legal profession in Nigeria, has made it clear over the years that the training of lawyers cannot be adequately carried out through correspondence or distance learning, which can be interpreted as online learning or remote learning. As a response to the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown, various online teaching and learning methods were adopted by educational institutions all over the world, to ensure the continuity of the learning process, truncated by the pandemic. This study, carried out through a multidisciplinary approach, is an assessment of the perception of students on the level of effectiveness of COVID-19-imposed online teaching and learning, especially, in comparison with the traditional classroom setting among legal education students in Nigeria. From the study, it was observed that students perceived the online learning method to be more effective than the traditional face-to-face method of delivery but were less focused during the online classes as compared to physical classes. Furthermore, many of the students opined that online classes should be discontinued after the lockdown. Despite students’ distractions during online learning, there is a need to recognize that online learning is a panacea for the crisis at hand (the COVID-19 pandemic), and for as long as it lasts, there may not be a complete return to the physical classroom setting. The study suggests ways of minimizing the challenges that students who do not find online learning effective face with its use, while also calling on the Council of Legal Education to revisit its stance towards the adoption of online learning as a suitable teaching method to be incorporated into legal education.

With the advent of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) which has spread to the majority of countries across the world, the World Health Organisation (WHO) declared a global pandemic on 11 March 2020. Governments all over the world, including in southern Africa, introduced measures such as the banning of large gatherings, closure of borders, schools and institutions of higher learning to curb the spread of COVID-19. To ensure ongoing teaching and learning, institutions of higher learning made resolutions to transition to remote/online teaching and learning. While online education has long preceded the pandemic, the spiraling of COVID-19 all over the world resulted in the upscaling of online teaching and learning in higher education institutions. Mandatory online teaching and learning was a relatively new practice to most lecturers and students in southern Africa. Drawing on two case stories from Botswana and Namibia, this paper offers a think piece on the shifts to online learning, considering assumptions, implications and possibilities for quality learning in teacher education, through a reflection by teacher educators of environment and sustainability courses. The assumptions in online learning were that students and teacher educators had the capacity and infrastructure for remote/online teaching and learning. This paper thus opens up opportunities for institutions of higher learning to scale up their Information Communication Technology (ICT) infrastructure and support for both students and teacher educators for online teaching and learning which have the potential to improve on quality education during times of crisis. Keywords: Online teaching and learning, ICT infrastructure, Education for SustainableDevelopment (ESD), quality education

The COVID-19 pandemic outbreak has forced online teaching and learning to be the primary instruction format in higher education globally. One of the worrying concerns about online learning is whether this method is effective, specifically when compared to face-to-face classes. This descriptive quantitative study investigates how students in higher education institutions in Hong Kong evaluated their online learning experiences during the pandemic, including the factors influencing their digital learning experiences. By analysing the survey responses from 1,227 university students in Hong Kong, this study found that most of the respondents felt dissatisfied with their online learning experiences and effectiveness. Meanwhile, this study confirms that respondents’ household income level and information technology literacy affected their online learning effectiveness. Moreover, this study highlights the significant contributions of the community of inquiry, which places social presence on the promotion of a whole person development that could not be achieved when relying mainly on online learning. Findings encourage university leaders and instructors to search for multiple course delivery modes to nurture students to become caring leaders with the 21st century skills and knowledge set.
