Laboratory Performance and Field Case Study of Asphalt Mixture with Sasobit Treated Aramid Fiber as Modifier

The use of fiber in asphalt mixtures can improve the mixture’s tensile strength and increase its cracking resistance, but the clumping of fiber in the mixture can weaken the improvement effect. The aim of this research is to assess the properties of Sasobit treated aramid fiber modified asphalt mixture and to validate the field case study. The rutting and stripping resistance of the fiber-modified mixture was identified with the Hamburg wheel tracking device. The low-temperature cracking characteristics of the asphalt mixture were quantified with the disk-shaped compact tension test. Moreover, the dynamic modulus test was adopted to reflect the response of the mixture to different loads and frequencies. The creep slope and stripping slope decreased by 67%, and the number of passes to stripping point and fail point increased by more than 250% after fiber modification. The fracture energy, peak load, and maximum crack mouth opening displacement (CMOD) of the mixture increased more than 10% after fiber modification. The dynamic modulus, rutting parameter, and fatigue parameter of the mixture were improved after fiber modification. The fiber in the mixture improved the stiffness of the mixture at high temperatures. The tensile strength improvement at low temperatures promoted the cracking resistance of the mixture. The cracking number in the fiber modified asphalt pavement was less than that in the control asphalt pavement. Thus, fiber modification could significantly restrict the propagation of cracking in the asphalt mixture. The implementation of fiber in the project can provide experience for future fiber application in asphalt pavement.

The objectives of this paper are to characterize the mechanical properties of porous asphalt pavement mixtures containing RAP and a WMA additive using Super pave gyratory compactor and dynamic modulus testing. Four types of asphalt mixtures were evaluated in this study. This study evaluated compaction energy index, permeability, indirect tensile strength, and dynamic modulus for all types of porous asphalt mixtures. All of the asphalt mixtures meet the typical minimum coefficient of permeability in this study. In addition, only a slight decrease in was found when WMA additive was added to the porous asphalt mixture containing RAP. For indirect tensile strength testing, WMA containing RAP was found to have the highest tensile strength among all of the mixtures tested.

Prone to low temperature cracking of asphalt pavement problems in cold areas, testing BBR on 70# base asphalt and 4 kinds of different dosage of SBS modified asphalt, testing TSRST on their mixture to appraisal the low temperature performance of SBS modified asphalt mixture. Results show that compared with the temperature stress of internal cracks of base asphalt and SBS modified asphalt mixture not rise significantly. But the stress of SBS asphalt mixture growing slow and the temperature of cracking reduce obviously; it means the low temperature performance improved. This shows that SBS improves the toughness and reduced the modulus of asphalt mixture in low temperature, rather than increasing the tensile strength of mixture specimens.

This study focused on the performance of the Large Stone Permeable Asphalt Mixture (LSPM) with neat asphalt and its feasibility to use as asphalt pavement flexible base. For comparision, LSPM mixtures were designed respectively with neat 60/70-grade asphalt and modified asphalt and the performance of LSPM was studied and compared by volume index test, draindown test, Hamburg Wheel-tracking Test and dynamic modulus test. The results showed that the performance of LSPM with modified asphalt was superior to LSPM with neat asphalt and cellulose fiber, but draindown and rutting performance of LSPM with neat asphalt met requirements of corresponding specification and dynamic modulus of LSPM with neat asphalt had the same characteristic with LSPM with modified asphalt, which proven that LSPM with neat asphalt can use as asphalt pavement flexible base by properly mix design and pavement structure design.

Flexible pavements deteriorate and crack with time due to the frequent traffic load imposed upon it. Many studies have been done to predict the effects of frequent traffic load and environmental conditions on pavements in the effort to find the best pavement design which resist deterioration and ensure longer pavement service time. This study investigates the effect of mixing asphalt with varying percentages of nano calcium carbonate (CaCO3), namely 0, 2, 4, and 6 %. The mixtures were designed based on the Superpave mix design criteria. Investigation was done using several tests, namely resilient modulus, indirect tensile strength, moisture susceptibility, and dynamic modulus tests. Samples were subjected to aging to determine their resilient modulus. The results of the investigation show that resilient modulus and indirect tensile strength increased when higher percentages of nanoparticles were added to asphalt mixture, with improvement of 138 and 48.18% respectively. Modified binders showed up to 17% improvement in moisture susceptibility comparison to base asphalt mixture, while the result of dynamic modulus test showed that the stiffness of modified asphalt increased 76.69%. The investigation also found that adding 6% CaCO3 nanoparticles to asphalt produced modified asphalt with the best performance. In addition, the results show that the modified asphalt with CaCO3 is suitable for hot and humid regions (tropical countries) in the field of highways construction, as the modifier was able to mitigate the influences of high-temperature rutting and moisture damage.

To solve the high-temperature rutting problem of asphalt pavement, the old rubber of the tire rubber and plastic of general polyethylene waste composite modified asphalt mixture is proposed. The plastic and rubber compound particle was made by the rubber through efficient desulfurization additives, pre-swelling, twin-screw extrusion equipment. The particles mixed with the asphalt mixtures specimen preparation and the dynamic stability experiments, composite beam fatigue experiments, flexural tensile strength and modulus experiments and anti-reflective pavement cracks and other mechanical experiments are performed. The comparative data obtained by the rubber and plastic composited modified asphalt mixtures and SBS asphalt mixtures prove that the rubber and plastic composited modified asphalt mixtures have excellent rutting resistance and fatigue resistance.

Based on the viscoelasticity theory and the data of creep test, Burgers model was established, which was used to study the viscoelastic property of SBR asphalt mixtures, and the viscoelastic constitutive relation was obtained. Using the finite element method, the temperature stresses field was calculated under the environmental conditions and the thermal stresses of SBR modified asphalt pavement was given at the last part of this paper. The study indicated that SBR modified asphalt mixtures have the advantage over common asphalt mixture in low-temperature performance.

In this paper, recycled PE was added directly to the asphalt mixture to prepare high modulus asphalt mixture. To study the influence of the dosage and molecular weight of recycled PE on the performance of asphalt mixture, three kinds of recycled PE with different molecular weight and three asphalt binders (Conventional, SBS Modified and PE Modified) were used to prepare eight kinds of asphalt mixture. Various tests, including dynamic modulus, wheel tracking and Lottman test, were conducted to evaluate the performance of them. The results showed that 1) the dynamic modulus of asphalt mixture modified by recycled PE is higher than the normal mixture and mixture prepared with SBS modified asphalt binder; 2) adding recycled PE directly into the asphalt mixture during mixing is more effective than preparing asphalt mixture with PE modified asphalt binder in making high modulus asphalt mixture; 3) the recycled PE used to produce high modulus asphalt mixture should have certain big molecular weight, more than 27,000, and the dosage of recycled PE should be no less than 0.4% of the total weight of asphalt mixture. The performance tests indicted the good high temperature deformation resistance property of asphalt mixture modified by recycled PE.

In order to analyze the characteristics of high modulus asphalt mixture dynamic modulus, Universal Testing Machine (UTM-25) was used for dynamic modulus test of three kinds of mixtures, which were PR Module modified asphalt mixture and PR PLAST.S modified asphalt mixture and virgin asphalt mixture, to investigate dynamic modulus and phase angle at different temperatures and frequencies. The results indicate that: the dynamic modulus order of the three asphalt mixtures is PR MODULE > PR PLAST.S > Virgin. PR MODULE asphalt mixture dynamic modulus is much larger than the other two.

Natural mineral fiber with good performances of mechanical properties and environmentally friendly, pollution-free especially have gradually aroused extensive concern. In order to improve the quality of asphalt pavement, explore the applicability of nature basalt fiber in enhanced asphalt mixture performance, this paper investigates two typical asphalt mixtures and contrastive studies pavement performance of asphalt mixture by high temperature stability, water stability, low temperature anti-cracking and fatigue performance between basalt fiber modified asphalt mixture and base asphalt mixture, and then study the basic principle of fiber reinforcing asphalt mixture. The research show that basalt fiber modified asphalt mixture has a better pavement performance than base asphalt mixture, its dynamic stability is 1.6 times than base asphalt mixture, low temperature anti-cracking performance increased by more 25% and fatigue life is more 2 times than base asphalt mixture. And the basalt fiber can be used in the road engineering as an additive material that enhances the comprehensive performance of asphalt pavement.
