This study develops two scales, namely, the outside school social media behavior (OSSMB) scale and inside school social media behavior (ISSMB) scale, to measure the types of behavior that adolescent students engage in on social media in two separate contexts: outside school and inside school. Data collected from 814 students in four Hong Kong secondary schools were divided into two equal data sets ( n = 407 for each) by random selection and then analyzed. Principle component analysis (PCA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) were used to generate and test the structures of the two scales on the different data sets. The PCA results showed good factor loadings for all items (all above .60), and satisfactory total variance were explained by the both structures (69.06% for the OSSMB and 75.30% for the ISSMB). The CFA results showed acceptable model fits for both first- and second-order CFA for both scales. The internal consistency for all factors (and subdimensions) and the two scales were also acceptable. The 21-item OSSMB scale has four subdimensions: Consuming, Communicating, Creating, and Sharing. The 10-item ISSMB scale has three subdimensions: Consuming, Creating, and Sharing. In conclusion, this study provides new tools and conceptual frameworks for assessing students’ social media behavior in two contexts (i.e., outside and inside of school).

This study evaluated the psychometric properties of a Chinese version of the 24-item Social Environment Questionnaire (SEQ-C). Confirmatory factor analysis was used to examine the factor validity and measurement invariance (Purpose 1) of the SEQ-C in 453 older adults in Hong Kong. Convergent validity (Purpose 2) and test–retest reliability (Purpose 3) were also measured. The results of the confirmatory factor analysis and measurement invariance supported the four-factor structure (representing companionship, encouragement, neighborhood social cohesion, and role models) of the SEQ-C, in a 15-item model that closely fitted the data. The SEQ-C was also found to have acceptable to satisfactory internal consistency, test–retest reliability, composite reliability, and moderate convergent validity in correlating perceived social support. This study showed that the SEQ-C is a suitable means of measuring the social environments of older adults in Hong Kong.

AbstractThis study was conducted to determine the significance of the influence of trust information, media literacy, HEXACO personality and Husnudzon towards the tendency of using social media for seeking information at student college. The subject of this research was 280 students taken by probability sampling technique, namely cluster sampling. CFA (Confirmatory Factor Analysis) was used to test the validity of measuring instruments and logistic regression analysis is used to test the research hypothesis. The results showed that there was a significant joint effect of trust, media literacy, HEXACO's personality and Husnudzon towards the tendency of using social media for seeking information. Hypothesis test results show that six variables namely trust, structure of media literacy knowledge, personal media literacy locus, extraversion personality type, Husnudzon towards God, and Husnudzon towards others have a significant influence on the tendency of using social media for seeking information. Meanwhile, media literacy competencies, personality types; honesty-humility, emotionality, agreeableness, conscientiousness, and openness to experience do not have a significant influence on the tendency of using social media for seeking information. The results also show the proportion of variance from the tendency of using social media for seeking information explained by all independent variables is 18.0% while the remaining 82.0% is influenced by other variables outside of this study.

It has been widely acknowledged that empathy plays an important role in school education, but empathy as a part of school organizational culture has not been extensively studied in the Indian context. This study explores empathy as the driver for school organizational culture and strives to create a platform for school organizational designs with empathy as the core construct. The study was conducted with two main objectives: (a) to establish and validate a model of empathy-driven school organizational culture and (b) to develop a valid and reliable instrument to measure organizational empathy in Indian schools. A random sample of 441 students participated in the study. The empathy-driven model was validated through exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis. A part of the questionnaire used for the first part of the study was used for the second part as an independent instrument and validated through confirmatory factor analysis. The instrument was further validated for convergent, discriminant and concurrent validity. Thus, a model for empathy-driven school organizations was validated and a reliable and valid instrument for measuring empathy-driven cultures in schools was developed.

Objective: Understanding the construct of hopelessness in the context of a life-threatening or terminal illness is a complex and challenging undertaking. The objective of this study was to examine the construct of hopelessness in patients with advanced AIDS by examining the structure of the Beck Hopelessness Scale in this specific population. Methods: For the past three decades, the primary measure used to study hopelessness in a variety of populations has been the Beck Hopelessness Scale. Several factor analytic studies have been published using this scale, with studies of nonclinical samples typically describing a two-factor model (optimism and pessimism), whereas clinical samples have consistently generated a third factor (lack of motivation to make changes). We used confirmatory factor analysis to analyze two data sets in patients with AIDS.Results: Confirmatory factor analysis of the Beck Hopelessness Scale in two samples of patients with far advanced AIDS revealed a clear superiority for a three-factor model.Significance of results: The Beck Hopelessness Scale has unique characteristics when applied to a terminally ill population. The implications of these results for studies of terminal illness are discussed.

The present study is based on the development of scale to measure schadenfreude in adolescents. The objectives of the study are twofold i.e., the development of an indigenous scale to measure schadenfreude among adolescents and to establish the validity of this scale. To achieve these goals, study comprised of two phases. Item pool was generated on the basis of literature as well as content analysis of the information obtained through focus groups and it was finalized through committee approach. Factor structure of the scale was determined by conducting Exploratory Factor Analysis (N=330). In Phase-II, psychometric properties of the scale were established by conducting Confirmatory Factor Analysis on an independent sample (N=320). Descriptive statistics, alpha reliabilities and item total correlations were computed. The final scale comprised of 28 statements with six domains included Rivalry, Negative Emotions, Unfairness, Worthlessness, Comparison Bias, and Helplessness. It is a measure schadenfreude among adolescents.

Abstract. This investigation provides evidence of the structural validity related to scores from the Online Self-Assessment (OSA) Figures scale. This scale was constructed for the assessment of figural reasoning as part of an online self-assessment battery. Since the appropriateness of confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) of data obtained by dichotomous items has been questioned, two suitable methods including different link transformations were considered: (1) confirmatory factor analysis including the congeneric model of measurement with tetrachoric correlations as input and (2) confirmatory factor analysis according to the weighted congeneric model with probability-based covariances as input. The models tested a unidimensional structure for the scale. Support for structural validity was identified through acceptable model-data fit indices and convergence of the parameter estimates across analysis methods. Furthermore, the OSA Figures scale showed an acceptable degree of homogeneity according to McDonald’s Omega and substantial correlation with course scores.
