Ad interpretation is a central issue in nearly every false advertising case before both the Federal Trade Commission and the federal courts (under the Lanham Trade-Mark Act). Part of ad interpretation is the ancillary issue of whether to require extrinsic evidence supporting a disputed interpretation, particularly where the false claim alleged to be made is implicitly rather than explicitly stated. The authors first discuss the legal standard concerning when extrinsic evidence is required. Though the FTC and most federal courts apply different standards in requiring extrinsic proof of an ad's meaning, some federal courts appear to be moving toward the FTC's standard—namely, that extrinsic proof is required only for those implied claims that the decision maker cannot himself interpret with confidence from the face of the ad itself. The authors then use a Bayesian decisionmaking perspective to examine the implementation of the FTC's legal standard. This perspective leads to the conclusion that measures of variability will often be as important to decisionmaking as the mean estimate provided in statistical evidence.

The chapter addresses challenges from empirical psychology and psychiatry that called into question some of the inherited conceptions of sin and guilt. Those relatively new sciences caused some in the Catholic tradition to oppose the psychological approaches as a threat to the confessional tradition and others to reconsider confession in the face of the emerging sciences and to emphasize the benefits of the new psychology for understanding neuroses and mental illnesses that confessors periodically encountered in the confessional. Some, too, underlined the therapeutic and psychological benefits of auricular confession that were consistent with the new sciences. The moral issue of birth control also arose for Catholics in the early 1930s when Pope Pius XI condemned the use of all artificial means of birth regulation. Anecdotal and statistical evidence seems to indicated that significant numbers of childbearing Catholics practiced birth control and a few ceased going to confession because of it.

Abstract Background Our understanding of the functional anatomy of the face is constantly improving. To date, it is unclear whether the anatomic location of the line of ligaments has any functional importance during normal facial movements such as smiling. Objectives It is the objective of the present study to identify differences in facial movements between the medial and lateral midface by means of skin vector displacement analyses derived from 3D imaging and to further ascertain whether the line of ligaments has both a structural and functional significance in these movements. Methods The study sample consisted of 21 healthy volunteers (9 females & 12 males) of Caucasian ethnic background with a mean age of 30.6 (8.3) years and a mean BMI of 22.57 (2.5) kg/m 2. 3D images of the volunteers’ faces in repose and during smiling (Duchenne type) were taken. 3D imaging-based skin vector displacement analyses were conducted. Results The mean horizontal skin displacement was 0.08 (2.0) mm in the medial midface (lateral movement) and was -0.08 (1.96) mm in the lateral midface (medial movement) (p = 0.711). The mean vertical skin displacement (cranial movement of skin toward the forehead/temple) was 6.68 (2.4) mm in the medial midface whereas it was 5.20 (2.07) mm in the lateral midface (p = 0.003). Conclusions The results of this study provide objective evidence for an antagonistic skin movement between the medial and the lateral midface. The functional boundary identified by 3D imaging corresponds to the anatomic location of the line of ligaments.

The CO2 concentration in the atmosphere of a potato clamp varied between 0·06 and 0·86%. The sum of CO2 and oxygen concentrations remained approximately constant at 21%. The CO2 concentration increased with time from December to April. This was attributed to increase in the rate of respiration of the potatoes caused by rise of temperature. Wind blowing in the direction normal to the face of the clamp reduced the COa concentration, presumably by causing external air to flow through the clamp coverings. A multiple regression of CO2 concentration on temperature of the potatoes at the time of sampling, and on the mean component of wind velocity normal to the clamp face estimated over a period of 3 hr. before the time of sampling, accounted for 64% of the variance between sampling occasions.Unsaturated compounds were detected in the clamp atmosphere by absorption in bromine; the concentration of these, expressed as ethylene, varied between 0·004 and 0·025%.The magnitude of CO2 accumulation and oxygen depletion in the clamp atmosphere was too small to produce effects of practical importance on the storage behaviour of the potatoes. If the unsaturated compounds were ethylene, the concentration present was sufficient to cause appreciable retardation of sprouting.

Justice Stewart’s 1966 dictum about the inevitability of government success in challenging mergers under Section 7 of the Clayton Act held true for another fifteen years or so. In the early 1980s, however, federal enforcement agencies, the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), began to find the federal courts less hospitable to antitrust merger cases as more sophisticated economic inquiries and changing proof burdens complicated the task of identifying anticompetitive mergers. Indeed, since the early 1980s, the government has lost more litigated merger cases than it has won and has come under criticism from some quarters for becoming gun shy and not adequately policing the wave of consolidations that have occurred over the past decade.Hospital mergers, however, are a different story. Until two years ago, the government rode a streak of important victories in federal courts and FTC administrative proceedings, and had obtained consent decrees from scores of hospitals that had announced plans to merge.

Background: To provide quantitative objective data demonstrating the longevity and amount of volume augmentation in the fatty dystrophy of the facial tissue obtained with autologous lipofilling.   Methods: In our clinic had been operated 8 patients for last 2 years with fatty dystrophy of the facial tissue. A prospective analysis of all patients who underwent at our private practice and were followed up for at least 1,5 year. Surgery was performed under general anesthesia it is necessary for clear results tissue correction. We based on the literature has seen numerous clinical reports highlighting the benefits of autologous fat transfer for face from that areas, fat was collected from the abdomen (most frequently used donor site), hips, outer thighs (saddle-bags), internal knee or thigh, with quantitative volume measurements evaluating the amount of postoperative volume change.   Results: Twenty eight patients were included in the study. The mean follow-up time was 18 months. The mean amount of autologous fat injected into each face region was 10-70 mL. Hypercorrection was performed after 3 months and it was 20-50% of the initial injected fat volume. Overall, the mean absolute volume augmentation measured at their last (after 6 month) post operative visit was 10-25%. There was variability between patients in the volume amount and percentage that remained. The resorption process was observed in two patients after 6 month. We made correction with hyaluronic acid and silicone implants.   Conclusion: To our knowledge, this study is the first clinical quantification in our practise of autologous fat transfer and/or grafting in the literature that provides definitive evidence on the amount as well as the resultant longevity in the face. Autologous fat transfer to the face has definite long-term volume augmentation results. On average, approximately 25-35% of the injected volume remains at 18 months. However, some variability exists in the percentage of  volume that remains that may require a touch-up procedure.

AbstractFacial flap surgery depends strongly on thorough preoperative planning and precise surgical performance. To increase the dimensional accuracy of transferred facial flaps, the methods of ultrasound and three-dimensional (3D) surface scanning offer great possibilities. This study aimed to compare different methods of measuring distances in the facial region and where they can be used reliably. The study population consisted of 20 volunteers (10 males and 10 females) with a mean age of 26.7 ± 7.2 years and a mean body mass index of 22.6 ± 2.2 kg/m2. Adhesives with a standardized length of 20 mm were measured in various facial regions through ultrasound and 3D surface scans, and the results were compared. Regardless of the facial region, the mean length measured through ultrasound was 18.83 mm, whereas it was 19.89 mm for 3D surface scans, with both p < 0.0001. Thus, the mean difference was 1.17 mm for ultrasound measurements and 0.11 mm for 3D surface scans. Curved facial regions show a great complexity when it comes to measuring distances due to the concavity and convexity of the face. Distance measurements through 3D surface scanning showed more accurate distances than the ultrasound measurement. Especially in “complex” facial regions (e.g., glabella region and labiomental sulcus), the 3D surface scanning showed clear advantages.

AbstractThe use of the Washio retroauricular flap for nasal reconstruction has been infrequently covered in recent literature, particularly concerning the pediatric population. A retrospective study was conducted between 2014 and 2018 and included all pediatric patients who underwent a Washio retroauricular flap procedure for nasal reconstruction operated on by the same surgeon at a referral center for pediatric plastic and maxillofacial surgery. The mean age at the time of the first stage of the Washio procedure was just under 8 years of age (range: 6 years 3 months–8 years 10 months). The Washio retroauricular flap procedure was successfully employed in three patients with three different anatomical defects, including the nasal alae, nasal tip, and columella, without postoperative healing complications. Arguably, the Washio method is sufficiently versatile to be used in various defect types, allows space and planning for subsequent surgical corrections, avoids additional visible scarring of the face, and spares flaps that may be required at the end of the growth, such as the pedicled forehead flap. It is a safe procedure, provided that at least a two-stage procedure is performed, and a progressive postoperative verticalization is prescribed to limit venous drainage complications.

Background Epicrania fugax consists of brief paroxysms of pain, which radiate in a line or in zigzag trajectory across the surface of the scalp or the face. Methods A prospective, descriptive study was performed in five patients presenting with an epicrania fugax-type pain with extracephalic irradiation. Results All patients were women, and the mean age at onset was 59.8 (standard deviation, 10.9). They had unilateral paroxysms of electrical pain starting at a particular point in the head (parietal, n = 3; vertex, n = 1; frontal, n = 1) and rapidly radiating downwards in a lineal trajectory to reach extracephalic regions (ipsilateral limbs, n = 2; shoulder, n = 2; low neck, n = 1) in 1–3 seconds. Pain intensity was moderate or severe. Three patients had nummular headache at the point where the paroxysms originated. One patient had spontaneous remission, and four patients achieved complete or almost complete response with therapy (onabotulinumtoxinA, n = 2; indomethacin, n = 1; amitriptyline, n = 1; lamotrigine, n = 1). Conclusion The spectrum of epicrania fugax may include paroxysms with extracephalic irradiation. The propagation of pain beyond the head and the face supports the involvement of central mechanisms in the pathophysiology of this entity.

Abstract Background Aesthetic treatment of the lower face is increasingly in demand, particularly owing to age-related changes in appearance. VYC-25L is a novel hyaluronic acid filler with high G′ and high cohesivity, specifically designed for sculpting and contouring of the chin and jaw. Objectives The aim of this study was to assess the use of a grid traced onto the chin and jaw for guiding treatment with VYC-25L. Methods This was a retrospective, single-center analysis of data from adult patients undergoing treatment of the lower third of the face with VYC-25L. A grid system of horizontal and vertical lines was used to systematize the process of treatment planning and performance. Results Thirty subjects were enrolled (53.3% female; mean [standard deviation] age, 34.4 [2.8] years). The mean quantity of VYC-25L used was 4.0 [0.8] mL. Based on the 5-point Global Aesthetic Improvement Scale, 29 patients (96.7%) rated their appearance at 20 days posttreatment as “much improved” or “very much improved.” The only complications recorded were early transient soft-tissue edema (n = 14; 46.7%) and bruising (n = 6; 20.0%). There were no cases of infection, paresthesia, asymmetry, hematoma, necrosis, or skin discoloration. Conclusions Treatment of the chin and jawline with VYC-25L, with injection locations determined by a standardized grid-based approach, appears to be effective and safe with high rates of patient satisfaction. Injection of this filler offers a potentially high-impact approach for patients across a variety of biological and economic circumstances. Level of Evidence: 4
