One route toward career preparation for college students comes from work experience. Internships demonstrate benefits, but there is limited inquiry on the career development benefits of Federal Work Study (FWS). Archival data from nearly 600 students at one Southeastern research I institution suggest a significant and positive relationship between FWS participation and career clarity, decisiveness, and satisfaction. We outline the opportunity for further inquiry on process variables and the potential impact of FWS on the career development of our most vulnerable college student populations.

As an increasing number of emerging adults enter university as undergraduate students, and the relationship between higher education and the graduate employment market becomes ever more interconnected, it is critical to examine how this population can navigate their career development effectively in today's ever-changing world. This paper draws attention to the influence of uncertainty on the career development of emerging adults as undergraduate students. Three critical challenges that are related to uncertainty are examined, including: (a) ambiguity in the external environment; (b) inadequate management of uncertainty due to executive function deficits; and (c) mental health implications – specifically, anxiety—that arise from uncertainty. Then, I address these challenges with three postmodern career development approaches and their related interventions, including the Chaos Theory of Careers, the narrative approach, and the spiritual approach.

This study examines the relationship between emotional competence and student engagement of the first year undergraduate students in Kerala. Research into both student engagement and student emotional competence is on the increase, with widespread agreement that both are critical determinants of student success in higher education. Less researched are the complex, reciprocal relationships between these important influences. The study was conducted among 600 hundred first year undergraduate students from 12 colleges of the four districts of Kerala. The results demonstrate that there is a significant and positive relationship with the variables of the study. The study throws up conclusively that higher the emotional competence better will be the student engagement.

Abstract.VOCATIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND PREPARATION FOR CAREER IN COLLEGE STUDENTSPreparation for career emerges as a variable of interest in the university environment to the extent that these students pursue primarily their integration in the workplace for being formed. Moreover, the research reveals the importance of career development at the time of satisfaction and achievement in getting decisions made ??. Both variables are configured as highlights in the processes of counseling and vocational and career guidance. The aim of this study was to establish the relationship between preparation for career and vocational development considering gender as covariates and vocational group membership. For this biodata questionnaires (Rocabert & Martínez-Vicente, 2011a) and Career Preparation (Martinez-Vicente & Rocabert, 2011) to a sample of 1111 subjects with a mean age 21.9 years ( Sd = 3 were applied , 87) of different courses and university degrees distributed in five pre - professional (Humanistic, psychoeducational, health, sociolegal, Science and Technology). The results obtained indicated that career development was associated with preparation for professional careers. Likewise it found differences in some factors biodata regarding sex and pre-professional group. Were also found differences in preparing for careers in relation to sex, the pre-professional groups and the type of career development. Keywords University counseling, vocational behavior, counseling system, university orientation, preparation for professional careerResumen.

Purpose Current college students in the USA are reporting higher levels of anxiety over career planning than previous generations, placing pressure on colleges to provide effective career development opportunities for their students. Research has consistently found that increasing career-related self-efficacy is particularly effective at increasing career-related behaviors among college students. These studies, however, do not account for the potentially negative impact of anxiety on cognitive, mediational pathways, including self-efficacy. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to determine if anxiety plays a sequentially mediating role in the relationship between self-efficacy and job search intentions among college students. Design/methodology/approach Participants who were currently looking for a job or an internship were recruited to participate in an online study regarding career development preparation. Participants completed a job search behaviors “quiz” and were randomly assigned to either a “no feedback/control” condition or a “false-positive feedback/experimental” condition. Their career decision-making self-efficacy and state-trait anxiety were then assessed, as well as their intentions to engage in job search behaviors. A sequential mediational pathway analysis was performed to determine whether anxiety plays a mediational role in the relationship between self-efficacy and job search behaviors. Findings The hypothesized sequential mediational model was statistically significant. More specifically, participants who were randomly assigned to receive positive feedback experienced significantly lower levels of anxiety than participants in the control condition. In turn, lower levels of anxiety led to significantly higher levels of self-efficacy and significantly higher levels of job search intentions. Practical implications These findings have immediate implications for practitioners and educators who work with college students or any population that may be facing anxiety regarding the job search process. More specifically, these underscore the importance of lowering anxiety in order to lead to significantly higher levels of engagement in the career preparation process. Originality/value Currently, few studies (if any) have examined the potential mediating impact of anxiety on career-related self-efficacy and career development. Furthermore, no study has incorporated experimental methodology to test multiple pathways between anxiety, self-efficacy, and career preparation.

Purpose This exploratory study aimed to investigate the potential impact of sentence-level comprehension and sentence-level fluency on passage comprehension of deaf students in elementary school. Method A total of 159 deaf students, 65 students ( M age = 13.46 years) in Grades 3 and 4 and 94 students ( M age = 14.95 years) in Grades 5 and 6, were assessed for nonverbal intelligence, vocabulary knowledge, sentence-level comprehension, sentence-level fluency, and passage comprehension. Group differences were examined using t tests, whereas the predictive and mediating mechanisms were examined using regression modeling. Results The regression analyses showed that the effect of sentence-level comprehension on passage comprehension was not significant, whereas sentence-level fluency was an independent predictor in Grades 3–4. Sentence-level comprehension and fluency contributed significant variance to passage comprehension in Grades 5–6. Sentence-level fluency fully mediated the influence of sentence-level comprehension on passage comprehension in Grades 3–4, playing a partial mediating role in Grades 5–6. Conclusions The relative contributions of sentence-level comprehension and fluency to deaf students' passage comprehension varied, and sentence-level fluency mediated the relationship between sentence-level comprehension and passage comprehension.
