Structural ultimate strength analysis of a first stage fan blade in a turbine jet engine RD-33

Statistical data clearly points out compressor train outage as one of the main reasons for the breakdown of aircraft power units. Outages are caused by various factors, including material conditions as the main one. Therefore, structural ultimate strength analysis of constructional raw material properties used in the production process of such an important part of an engine is not only of tremendous significance during the designing phase but also in a research phase and expertise associated with emergency situations. Considering the above-mentioned factors the article presents the outcomes of chemical composition, morphology, and phase structure of metallic material used to produce first row fan blades of RD-33 turbine jet engine, which is (currently) used by the Polish Air Force. Apart from typical material structure analysis, also the basic mechanical strength properties of materials have been determined including hardness, tensile, and impact tests. These may now constitute the basis for the analysis of substitute materials selection allowing the production of analyzed engine part.

The structural and strength analysis of the material used to construct such an important engine element as the turbine is of great significance, both at the design stage as well as during tests and expertises related to emergency situations. Bearing in mind the conditions above mentioned, the paper presents the results of research on the chemical composition, morphology and phased structure of the metallic construction material used to produce the blades of the high and low pressure turbine of the RD-33 jet engine, which is the propulsion unit of the MiG-29 aircraft. The data obtained as a result of the material tests of the blades allowed, on the basis of the analysis of chemical composition and phased structure, to determine the grade of the alloy used to construct the tested elements of the jet engine turbine. The structural stability of the material was found to be lower in comparison with engine operating conditions, which manifested itself as a clear decrease in the resistance properties of the blade material. The results obtained can be used as a basis for analyzing the life span of an object or a selection of material replacements, which enable to produce the analyzed engine element.

Abstract The paper discusses the influence of the initial parameters on the strength parameters of S235JR steel at low stress triaxiality. The analysis was performed using the Gurson-Tvergaard-Needleman (GTN) material model, which takes into consideration the material structure. The initial material porosity was defined as the void volume fraction f0. The fully dense material without pores was assumed and the typical and maximum values of porosity were considered for S235JR steel in order to analyse the porosity effect. The strength analysis of S235JR steel was performed basing on the force-elongation curves obtained experimentally and during numerical simulations. Taking into consideration the results obtained, the average values of the initial void volume fraction f0 = 0.001 for S235JR steel is recommended to use in a common engineering calculations for elements operating at low stress triaxiality. In order to obtain more conservative results, the maximum values of f0 = 0.0024 may be used.

A high rate of production of complex microparts is increasingly required by fields like electronics and micromechanics. Handling is one of the main problems, limiting those forming processes of small metal components consisting of multiple forming stages. A forming chain in which a metal strip acts both as raw material and support of the workpiece through the different stages of the process, is seen as a solution that radically simplifies the positioning of microparts. Each workpiece stays connected to the strip through all the forming steps, being separated just at the end of the process chain. In this work, a tooling system for the bulk forming from copper strips has been set up and employed in a full forward extrusion process of a micro-billet. The same die, with a diameter of 1 mm, has been used with three different strip thicknesses (1, 2 and 3 mm) and three different material conditions. The use of thinner and hard-as-rolled strips has resulted in achieving a higher ratio of the billet length to strip thickness.

In this study, FE modeling method for the buckling/ultimate strength analysis of a continuous stiffened panel under combined shear and thrust is proposed. In order to validate the proposed method, shear buckling collapse tests of a stiffened panel and FEM analysis are carried out. As the result of these, it is confirmed that the buckling collapse behavior and the ultimate strength estimated by the proposed method are in good agreement with the test results.
