Active Music Making Facilitates Prosocial Behaviour in 18-month-old Children

Whenever we celebrate in a group, music and dance are usually part of it. Music making is a highly social activity and even listening to recorded music in a group still gives us a sense of feeling as a unit. Recently, studies have shown that joint music making promotes prosocial feelings and behaviour in children and preschoolers. Active music making led to more prosocial behaviour than a similar non-musical activity. Until now, however, the impact of joint active music making on prosociality has not been studied in infants. Only the effect of passive bouncing to the beat has been studied so far. Therefore, in the current study we investigated whether the joint activity of music making in a natural multimodal way can evoke prosocial behaviour in infants. In our study, 50 18-month-olds were randomly assigned to one of three groups: active music, passive music or non-musical activity (joint book reading). Afterwards, we measured helping behaviour towards the experimenter. We found that joint music making led to more helping behaviour than listening to music or joint book reading, indicating that the prosocial effect of joint music making arises even in 18-month-olds.

Queen Elizabeth I’s musical talents and the elaborate music of her courtly entertainments are widely acknowledged. However, while the effect of Elizabeth’s gender on her authority as a ruler has been the subject of much historical research, the impact of this musical activity on the creation and representation of her authority has not been recognized. Gender stereotypes were both exploited and subverted as music became a symbol and tool of Elizabeth’s queenship. Poets and courtiers drew inspiration from Elizabeth’s music-making, combining traditional notions of the erotic power of female music with the idea of a musical harmony that governed the heavens, the political world, and the human soul to legitimize female power. By blending the talents of Elizabeth’s natural body with those of her political body, and by merging practical musicianship with speculative harmony, Elizabeth and her courtiers used music as a source of political authority.

The research presented in this paper describes an evaluation of the impact of spatial interventions in public spaces, measured by social media data. This contribution aims at observing the way a spatial intervention in an urban location can affect what people talk about on social media. The test site for our research is Domplatz in the center of Hamburg, Germany. In recent years, several actions have taken place there, intending to attract social activity and spotlight the square as a landmark of cultural discourse in the city of Hamburg. To evaluate the impact of this strategy, textual data from the social networks Twitter and Instagram (i.e., tweets and image captions) are collected and analyzed using Natural Language Processing intelligence. These analyses identify and track the cultural topic or “people talking about culture” in the city of Hamburg. We observe the evolution of the cultural topic, and its potential correspondence in levels of activity, with certain intervention actions carried out in Domplatz. Two analytic methods of topic clustering and tracking are tested. The results show a successful topic identification and tracking with both methods, the second one being more accurate. This means that it is possible to isolate and observe the evolution of the city’s cultural discourse using NLP. However, it is shown that the effects of spatial interventions in our small test square have a limited local scale, rather than a city-wide relevance.

At a time when academic activity in the area of communication is principally assessed by the impact of scientific journals, the scientific media and the scientific productivity of researchers, the question arises as to whether social factors condition scientific activity as much as these objective elements. This investigation analyzes the influence of scientific productivity and social activity in the area of communication. We identify a social network of researchers from a compilation of doctoral theses in communication and calculate the scientific production of 180 of the most active researchers who sit on doctoral committees. Social network analysis is then used to study the relations that are formed on these doctoral thesis committees. The results suggest that social factors, rather than individual scientific productivity, positively influence such a key academic and scientific activity as the award of doctoral degrees. Our conclusions point to a disconnection between scientific productivity and the international scope of researchers and their role in the social network. Nevertheless, the consequences of this situation are tempered by the nonhierarchical structure of relations between communication scientists. En un momento en que la actividad académica en el ámbito de la comunicación se valora principalmente por el impacto de las revistas y los medios de comunicación científica y por la productividad de los investigadores, surge la cuestión de si los factores sociales pueden condicionar la actividad científica con la misma fuerza que estos elementos objetivos. Esta investigación analiza la influencia de la productividad científica y de la actividad social en el ámbito de la comunicación. Se ha identificado la red social de los investigadores de comunicación a partir de las tesis doctorales. Para los 180 investigadores más activos en los tribunales de tesis se ha calculado su producción científica. Se utiliza el análisis de redes sociales para estudiar las relaciones que se producen en los tribunales de tesis doctorales. Los resultados muestran que los factores sociales influyen positivamente en una actividad académica y científica tan relevante como la obtención del grado de doctor, mientras que la productividad científica individual no lo hace. Como conclusiones cabe señalar que existe una desconexión entre la productividad científica y la proyección internacional de los investigadores y su papel en la red social. Las implicaciones de este hecho están matizadas por una estructura no jerarquizada de las relaciones entre los científicos de comunicación.

The article is devoted to the identification of ways of increasing the efficiency of the implementation of administrative and legal measures for the prevention of offenses by officials of public administration bodies. Ways to increase the efficiency of the implementation of administrative and legal measures for the prevention of offenses of officials of public administration bodies are differentiated into organizational, methodological, information, technical and legal. The article substantiates that organizational factors of increasing the efficiency of the implementation of administrative and legal measures for the prevention of offenses of officials of public administration are aimed at neutralizing and reducing the impact of the negative consequences of violation of the performance of official duties by these officials. Among the organizational ways of improving the efficiency of the implementation of administrative and legal measures for the prevention of offenses of officials of public administration, bodies are the improvement of the system of subjects of such activity, forms and methods of preventive work, coordination of their efforts in counteracting offenses in the system of public administration. It is determined that the key to improving the implementation of administrative and legal measures for the prevention of offenses of officials of public administration is the systematic development of methodological recommendations for subdivisions (officials) of public administration on the prevention of offenses of official nature, the implementation of special training for the purpose of training which may lead to the commission of offenses by an official. The article is devoted to the analysis of technical measures of prevention of offenses of officials of public administration bodies, covering special technologies, rules, means that prevent the occurrence of negative consequences in the process of social activity of people, committing offenses. The article substantiates that improving the implementation of administrative and legal measures for the prevention of offenses of officials of public administration requires the development of a clear regulatory framework for the neutralization of conditions that facilitate the commission of administrative offenses. The competitiveness of an insurance company depends on the competitiveness of the products and services it introduces in the market. The competitive advantages of the insurance company are expressed in the attractiveness and competitiveness of insurance policies. An economic and mathematical model of increasing the competitiveness of the insurance company is proposed, which allows to calculate the integrated indicator of competitiveness of the insurance policy based on a comprehensive system of indicators characterizing the reliability of the insurance company, quality of its services, competitiveness, social activity. To analyze the impact of these indicators on the competitiveness of the insurance policy and identify areas for improving the efficiency and competitiveness of the insurance company. The competitiveness of an insurance company depends on the competitiveness of the products and services it introduces in the market. The assessment of the quality of insurance company services is compliance with the needs, requirements, and insurance interests of customers. This assessment is performed each time an individual client chooses to cooperate with an insurance company that meets his insurance interests and wishes. Therefore, the overall competitiveness of the enterprise depends on the competitiveness of products and services offered on the market. The competitive advantages of the insurance company are expressed in the attractiveness and competitiveness of insurance policies. The insurance market in recent years has shown consistently high growth, which makes it attractive for doing business. In these conditions, the task of modeling the activities of the insurance company in a highly competitive market environment becomes relevant. A mathematical model of increasing the competitiveness of the insurance company is proposed, which allows to calculate the integrated indicator of competitiveness of the insurance policy based on a comprehensive system of indicators characterizing the reliability of the insurance company, quality of its services, competitiveness, social activity. With the proposed model, insurance companies can objectively assess their weaknesses and strengths to ensure continuous growth and decent competition in a competitive market environment. The model allows you to select performance indicators and perform modeling and determine the consequences of changes in this indicator, analyze the impact of these indicators on the competitiveness of insurance policies and identify areas for improving the efficiency and competitiveness of the insurance company. By conducting such experiments, insurance companies can make more informed choices and decisions, analyze areas of competitiveness, and more efficiently allocate resources.

Marketing and advertising play a significant role in the adoption of attitudes and societal norms, which have been shown to have a direct impact on behavioural intentions, ultimately leading to behavioural execution. Concurrent with other attempts to inform policy strategy with respect to harm minimisation in gambling there is a paucity of evidence pertaining to the impact that gambling advertising has on gambling behaviour, gambling-related harm, and the efficacy of advertising regulations to minimise harm. There appears to be an overwhelming portrayal of gambling as a normative, legitimate social activity, at the expense of highlighting the potential risks involved. Furthermore, new marketing techniques utilising the social media platform are able to instil emotive and positive attitudes towards gambling brands and products, as well as enabling consumers to widely share and recommend gambling products across their online community, sometimes exposing under-age and vulnerable populations to gambling. The following paper critically reviews existing research investigating the impact of current gambling advertising and marketing campaigns on both vulnerable (i.e. adolescents and problem gamblers) and normal adult populations, looking specifically at the impact of exposure, the positive framing of gambling, and the transparency of marketing techniques. It is concluded that marketing and advertising in gambling needs to facilitate more informed choice for consumers, and a more balanced approach in the framing of gambling. It is suggested that risk information is presented asynchronously to gambling promotions, as opposed to being delivered as peripheral information, and moreover future strategies need to be based on robust empirical evidence demonstrating the impact of responsible gambling advertising and marketing on behaviour.

The global COVID-19 pandemic has been an extraordinary situation. Social distancing has impacted the vast majority of people, reorganising society, physically separating us from friends, family and colleagues. Collectively we found ourselves in a distributed state, reliant upon digital technologies to maintain social and professional connections. Some activities can translate unabated to a digital medium, with benefits, such as the convenience inherent in many online shopping and banking services. Other activities, particularly those which are socially engaged, including inclusive music-making or design, may need to be re-framed and re-thought due to the absence of in-person contact.In Northern Ireland, the Performance Without Barriers (PwB) research group works with disabled artists from the Drake Music Project Northern Ireland (DMNI) to identify ways in which technology can remove access barriers to music-making. Since disabled people are experts in their unique lived experience of disability, they must be involved in the design process, an approach known as participatory design. At the end of 2020, many of us are still adjusting to the new normal, only beginning to understand the impact of distributed digital living. In this article, we examine how the socially engaged work of PwB has been affected, changed and adapted during the pandemic throughout 2019 to 2020, expanding ideas of distributed creativity to the notion of distributed design. The authors formalise the concept of socially engaged distributed participatory design, an approach that classifies PwB’s current research activities in the area of accessible music technology design and improvised musicking. Consideration is given to the impact the notion of ‘distribution’ has on degrees of participation.
