In today's world of global competition and high-speed product development, linkage among R&D, manufacturing, and marketing is more vital to successful business than ever before. Delivering a competitive product to the market at the right time, with the right specifications and feature benefits, all at a manufacturing cost that allows for profit, is one tough assignment. Add to this the global complexity of marketing, R&D, and manufacturing not being located in the same place, along with competing in an environment where world-class product development time is under 50 weeks, and you have a challenge that few companies are dealing with appropriately today. International marketing executives can no longer have the luxury of time to consider R&D and manufacturing as activities remotely related and remotely relevant to them. They have to deal with all of this complexity and be fully aware that without adequate understanding of the linkages necessary among marketing, R&D, and manufacturing, their businesses run a very high risk of failure ( Kotabe 1992 ). Based on my executive experience at three different companies, I have seen the same lingering problems. In this article, I will explore the essence of these problems and solutions based on my own experiences.

Abstract Developing the right products of good quality in a short period of time at a low cost is what every product development team dreams about. Developing multiple products with a common proven-in engine or “platform” is a powerful process that can help the team achieve the dream. In 1996, Lucent Technologies redesigned an entire family of outdoor electronic cabinets based on platforms. The impact of platform far exceeded expectation of all team members, both in terms of the development interval and manufacturing cost. For example, the first cabinet of the family took about the same development interval as in the pre-platform era. The second and third cabinets needed only about 25% of the development interval of the first. The fourth cabinet, however, consumed less than 10%; it required only 16 new parts to be designed out of an assembly total of 202 parts. In addition, all cabinets now have far fewer parts, most parts are common, and the assembly architecture is identical. The purpose of this paper is to share the experiences of the development team and describe a robust, step-by-step process that ensures the success of platform development. The emphasis has been placed on the business and process side of the project rather than technical details.

High-speed running on the Italian railway has been recently developed. One of the main problems to be solved for good high-speed running is the current pick-up with a pantograph from an overhead contact line. This problem can be solved by biasing, at very high values, the stiffness of the springs acting on pantograph arms. Unfortunately, in this way the pantographs developed up to now, based on previous experience, gave bad results due to excessive contact force (that is, after 2000 km it is necessary to change the worn contact shoe). A simple approach to easily and quickly solve this problem is the use of a servo actuated pantograph able to maintain the contact force at a given value. In this way the main problem to be solved is the right choice of the force actuator kind. Starting from the existing pantograph the authors show how it should be possible to have an almost constant contact force using an optimized servo actuated pantograph.

Silicon-on-insulator (SOI) structures have excellent potential for future use in radiation hardened and high speed integrated circuits. For device fabrication in SOI material a high quality superficial Si layer above a buried oxide layer is required. Recently, Celler et al. reported that post-implantation annealing of oxygen implanted SOI at very high temperatures would eliminate virtually all defects and precipiates in the superficial Si layer. In this work we are reporting on the effect of three different post implantation annealing cycles on the structure of oxygen implanted SOI samples which were implanted under the same conditions.

‘Marketing’ is not just an activity. It is a process, a philosophy and a phenomenon. The evolution of marketing has produced tremendous benefits to business and end consumers. The innovation in this field has been steady and yet at high speed. From ‘word of mouth advertising’ which was the only option earlier we are now at the mercy of what consumers are sharing about their experience on the internet. Social Media has become more powerful than what we think and this article shows how we can leverage this to benefit the top-line and customer delight. We dive deep to understand the influence Social Media can create towards purchase of residential property. As much complex it is to make the purchase decision of a property, it is equally difficult for marketers to send the right message to their target audience. Through this article, we are trying to see how marketers have transformed their traditional marketing strategies to address the needs of the millennial population, who are the most potential customers for property purchase.
