An innovative beam-to-column composite joint with adapter-bracket was proposed and its behavior was investigated through finite element analysis. The special adapter-bracket is to facilitate the assembly of the steel box beam and the concrete-filled steel tube column through high-strength blind bolts. In the adapter-bracket, two endplates are welded to the beam and bolted to the column, respectively. First, two finite element models of the bolted extended endplate joint were developed in ABAQUS and validated by available experimental results. Then, based on modified models, parametric analyses were conducted to evaluate the novel joint performance, in terms of the initial stiffness, rotation capacity, moment capacity, failure mode, and joint classification. The variables included flange thickness, endplate thickness, and bolt size. Results demonstrated that the joint behavior was significantly affected by the flange thickness, the endplate-A thickness, and bolt size while slightly influenced by the endplate-B thickness. Additionally, these joints had favorable rotation and moment capacity.

Abstract Hollow concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) member is mainly adopted in power transmission and transformation structures, but when it is used in the superstructure with complex stress, the hollow CFST member has a low bearing capacity and is prone to brittle failure. To improve the mechanical performance of hollow CFST members, a new type of reinforced hollow high strength concrete-filled square steel tube (RHCFSST) was proposed, and its axial compression performance was researched. 18 finite element analysis (FEA) models of axially loaded RHCFSST stub columns were established through FEA software ABAQUS. The whole stress process of composite columns was studied, and parametric studies were carried out to analyze the mechanical performance of the member. Parameters of the steel strength, steel ratio, deformed bar and sandwich concrete strength were varied. Based on the simulation results, the stress process of members can be divided into four stages: elastic stage, elastoplastic stage, descending stage and gentle stage. With the increase of steel strength, steel ratio, the strength of sandwich concrete and the addition of deformed bars, the ultimate bearing capacity of members also increases. Additionally, the increment of those parameters will improve the ductility of the member, except for the sandwich concrete strength.

The steel tube confined concrete (STCC) column exhibits excellent mechanical performance. A 3-D finite element model (FEM) using ABAQUS was established to simulate the performance of the composite joints with STCC column and RC beam. Accurate material model, rational element type, and solution method were discussed. Some STCC columns and composite joints with concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) column and STCC column were modeled based on the model, respectively. The results from FEM are good agreement with the test results. The mechanism of the composite joint was investigated based on the FEM.

Rational finite element models established by ABAQUS to analysis the mechanical properties of square steel tubular beam-column joints under low cyclic loading. The two beam-column joints are connected with bolts, one is with welding extended steel sheets at the beam root and the other has no welding extended steel sheets. The calculation and analysis results show that the new joint style using concrete filled steel tube structure both in beams and columns has advantage on the seismic performance. The load-displacement hysteresis curve of the beam end is plump without significant pinching and the joint specimens showed good ductility. The comparative analysis reveals that the joint with welding extended steel sheets at the beam root is more superior in the seismic performance respected to the joint without welding extended steel sheets.

Based on the characteristics of the special-shaped concrete-filled steel tubes and consideration of material nonlinearity of constitutive relation, stimulation of 6 T-shaped thin-walled ribbed and un-ribbed concrete-filled steel tube short columns is implemented, as well as comparable analysis of stress, strain, displacement and bearing capacity, through the finite element analysis software ANSYS. The result indicates that the rib can effectively improve the ductility, delaying the buckling occurs, which enhances the core concrete confinement effect, so as the stimulated ultimate bearing capacity which is greater than nominal ultimate bearing capacity.

A new composite strengthening method that the CFST short column was strengthened with concrete filled steel tube was presented. Through the finite element analysis of five specimens with strengthening circular concrete filled steel tube columns and a specimen without strengthening circular concrete filled steel tube to explore the impact of the outer layer of concrete strength grade, external pipe wall thickness for the ultimate bearing capacity of concrete filled steel tube columns. The results show that with the increase of the outer pipe wall thickness, double concrete filled steel tube column yield strength and ultimate strength have increased. As the outer concrete strength grade increased as the specimen bearing capacity increased. When the concrete strength grade greater than C40, the improvement of concrete strength for specimen ultimate bearing capacity is not great.

Concrete Filled Steel structures (CFST) offers wide benefits like high strength, ductility, and energy absorption with the combined benefits of steels and concrete. It also reduces the complexity of the production, as it does not require the shuttering of work, and so it is not commonly used. In addition to CFST elements, are more efficient, and allow for rapid construction and cost savings due to the elimination of the shape and material of component part. Concrete-filled-steel-tube is currently gaining more and more popularity in the construction industry. Concrete-filled-steel-tube it is a component of a good performance, as a result of the impact of the steel and holds it with concrete, and the question of structural diversity. In this paper, it presents a study of the evolution of the load carrying capacity, used for the connection of a variety of sizes and shapes, with a different position. The composite action of steel and concrete there is a need for a strong bond between the steel and concrete interface. Analysis of CFST column using the Finite element method and the numerical study is done on the selected case under axial loading condition.
