Modern identity has been shaped by technology, which has in turn shaped theories in understanding identity. How one communicates who they are to others is given limitless possibilities by the advent of the Internet and computer-mediated environments. Thus, identity theory today must take into account computer-mediated communication theory and research. Such research indicates four ways in which identity is affected by technology. First, researchers have discussed the differences between an individual’s true identity and the virtual identity he or she presents, via self-selected text and images, to an online world. Second, researchers have discussed how the Internet can provide both protective anonymity for those who seek it and cathartic disclosure for those who need it. Third, researchers have discussed ways in which users pursue both reflective virtual lives online and role-play with identities, often multiple identities. Fourth, researchers have conducted experiments that reflect the impact that virtual identity has on the practice of communication and the impact communication has on the presentation of the self.

Computer mediated communication (CMC) is fundamentally different from other modes of informational exchange. The presence of those with whom one communicates is not completely known. Their identities are in question, easily created, and changed by CMC users themselves who are not constricted by geographical or political boundaries. CMC represents a new form of communication—a “cyborg discourse” consisting of dynamic interplay of words, symbols, and metaphors. Participants in CMC engage in a unique human/technology interface that operates in a disembodied environment. It appears as a world without a history, dominated by connections. This chapter seeks to briefly describe and assess CMC’s philosophical significance and its influence upon communication theory. Once regarded as either the advent of a blissful utopia or the death of human intercourse, CMC has come to be seen as a phenomenon with wide-ranging possibilities, one that has recast communications as a coding problem.

Omnibus Law is the merging of several different rules into one law. RUU Cipta Kerja is one part of the Omnibus Law that attracts attention because it is considered detrimental to society. This caused a lot of rejection and protests from the society. The protest was held directly in the form of demonstrations in various regions of Indonesia and also in Twitter through #BatalkanOmnibusLaw. The purpose of this research is to find out the analysis of communication networks and identify influential actors in #BatalkanOmnibusLaw on Twitter. This research uses Social Network Analysis (SNA) methods and Computer-mediated Communication theory. Data is collected through Twitter from August 1-October 31, 2020. The process of analyzing and retrieving data is using Netlytic.org and Gephi software. The results showed that there were 62 actors with 153 interactions. Proximity between actors is worth 3, meaning close proximity and easy interaction between actors. The interactions created between actors are very few, uneven ,and the interactions that occur only one way. The #BatalkanOmnibusLaw is centered on ten actors, the most dominant account is @fraksirakyatid. Based on degree centrality analysis, closeness centrality, betweenness centrality, and eigenvector centrality the most influential actors in #BatalkanOmnibusLaw network are @fraksirakyatid and @walhinasional. Keywords: #BatalkanOmnibusLaw, Twitter, Actor, Communication Network

What has been referred to as the crisis of trust in social institutions has deep connections with communications, whether it be declining trust in news media and journalism, debates about the power of digital platforms and trust in online environments, questions surrounding media effects, the rise of political populism, or how trust or mistrust shapes interpersonal and intergroup communication. At the same time, trust in communications research has something of a “hidden history” when compared to disciplines such as philosophy, sociology, political science, and economics. Through a systematic literature review of uses of the concept of trust in six journals published by the International Communication Association—Journal of Communication; Communication Theory; Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication; Human Communication Research; Communication, Culture & Critique; and Annals of the International Communication Association (formerly Communication Yearbook)—this article undertakes a chronological and thematic analysis of how research into trust has evolved among communication researchers from the 1950s to 2020. It concludes with a discussion of the distinctive contributions of communications as a scholarly field to trust studies more broadly.

AbstractInformation and Communication Technology facilitates to accsess global information thorugh internet. This facility is indicated to increase growth of plagiarism actions. Asosiasi Penyelenggara Jasa Internet Indonesia (APJI) survey has published that the penetration of using internet Indonesia increase about 132,7 millons and 69,8% using by students in 2016. This research is purposed to find out and measure the strength of influence on easily accesing informastion through internet to the tendency of plagiarism action in student. This research is based on computer mediated communication theory consequently this research examine 3 (three) variables, indenpendent variables (the easiness of accessing information through internet), dependent variables (the tendency of plagiarim actions in writing scientifi papers, and interverning variabel (the social contexts of students). This method uses quantitative method and regression analyze tehnic. Then this method uses propotional strata sampling technic, so this research sample about 55 students. This research result verifies the influence power of easiness accessing information to the tendency of plagiarism action in students is weakness about 19.9%. This result happens because of interverning variable (student social contexts). In this result, we can say that the sophisticated of communication and information technology not directly present implications toward negative actions because the individual which determine to use this techologies.

Avatars are growing in popularity and present in many interfaces used for computer-mediated communication including social media, ecommerce, and educational applications. Communication researchers have been investigating avatars for over twenty years, and an examination of this literature reveals similarities but also notable discrepancies in conceptual definitions. The goal of this chapter is to provide a general overview of current debates, methodological approaches, and trends in findings. Our review synthesizes previous research in four areas. First, we examine how scholars have conceptualized the term “avatar,” identify similarities and differences across these definitions, and recommend that scholars use the term consistently. Next, we review theoretical perspectives relevant to avatar perception (e.g., the computers as social actors framework). Then, we examine avatar characteristics that communicators use to discern the humanity and social potential of an avatar (anthropomorphism, form realism, behavioral realism, and perceived agency) and discuss implications for attributions and communication outcomes. We also review findings on the social categorization of avatars, such as when people apply categories like sex, gender, race, and ethnicity to their evaluations of digital representations. Finally, we examine research on avatar selection and design relevant to communication outcomes. Here, we review both motivations in CMC contexts (such as self-presentation and identity expression) and potential effects (e.g., persuasion). We conclude with a discussion of future directions for avatar research and propose that communication researchers consider avatars not just as a topic of study, but also as a tool for testing theories and understanding critical elements of human communication. Avatar-mediated environments provide researchers with a number of advantageous technological affordances that can enable manipulations that may be difficult or inadvisable to execute in natural environments. We conclude by discussing the use of avatar research to extend communication theory and our understanding of communication processes.
