In this study, we investigated how Finnish children used photographs and drawings to discuss their preschool day experiences in focus groups. Building on sociocultural perspectives on mediated action, we specifically focused on how these visual tools were used as mediational means in sharing experiences. The results of our embodied interaction analysis highlight the relevance of visual tools for the participants and the task at hand in the moment-to-moment, micro-level flow of interaction and its material environment. More specifically, our analysis illuminates different ways in which the visual tools were relevant for participating children and adults when sharing and talking about their experiences. In all, our study advances present-day understanding regarding how sociocultural and embodied interaction frameworks can guide visual research with children.

Practical guidelines for characterization of soil-structure interaction (SSI) effects for shallow foundations are typically based on representing foundation-soil interaction in terms of viscoelastic impedance functions that describe stiffness and damping characteristics. Relatively advanced tools can describe nonlinear soil-foundation behavior, including temporary gap formation, foundation settlement and sliding, and hysteretic energy dissipation. We review two tools that describe such effects for shallow foundations and that are implemented in the computational platform OpenSees: a beam-on-nonlinear-Winkler foundation (BNWF) model and a contact interface model (CIM). We review input parameters and recommend parameter selection protocols. Model performance with the recommended protocols is evaluated through model-to-model comparisons for a hypothetical shear wall building resting on clay and model-data comparisons for several centrifuge test specimens on sand. The models describe generally consistent moment-rotation behavior, although shear-sliding and settlement behaviors deviate depending on the degree of foundation uplift. Pronounced uplift couples the moment and shear responses, often resulting in significant shear sliding and settlements. Such effects can be mitigated through the lateral connection of foundation elements with tie beams.

The present paper investigates three-part appliques from the ensemble of archaeological sites of Shivera Prospikhino, which was located in the Lower Angara region. The variants of this type of jewelry have been indicated, and their territorial distribution in the region and Northern Eurasia have been determined. The chronological frame of the extent of appliques during the research archaeological complex is presented. The highest diversity of variants of appliques are recorded in the burials of the 12th — middle 13th century. In the burials of the Mongol period (the 13th –14th century) appliques with a plain shield and items with a drawn line on shield predominate. Jewelry with a convex figured nose, with «pearls’ on the ears and with a drawn line in the center of the shield have not been not marked in the materials of nearby and distant archaeological complexes of Northern Eurasia. The paper puts forward a position on the universal using of three-part appliques. Visual research of the appliques allowed us to record technological traces that reflect the techniques of making jewelry. The characteristic of the recipe of the alloys used has been presented. At the moment, the published materials indicate that the territory of the Lower Angara region is the north-eastern border of the mass distribution of three-part appliques. Drawing as a form of analytical inscription can provide researchers with highly flexible methods for exploring embodied interaction. Graphical techniques can combine spatial layouts, trajectories of action and anatomical detail, as well as rich descriptions of movement and temporal effects. This paper introduces some of the possibilities and challenges of adapting graphical techniques from life drawing and still life for interaction research. We demonstrate how many of these techniques are used in interaction research by illustrating the postural configurations and movements of participants in a ballet class. We then discuss a prototype software tool that is being developed to support interaction analysis specifically in the context of a collaborative data analysis session.

Abstract The present paper takes an ethnomethodological and conversation analytical perspective on assisted shopping as it is done by a person with acquired brain injury in collaboration with her caregiver. My interest is directed towards the interactional and embodied organization of the situated selecting and decision-making processes, while I am aiming to understand the interactional organization of assistance and agency. The embodied interaction analysis is based on two video-recorded examples in which a caregiver treats the institutional resident’s shopping choice as either unproblematic or undesirable. I will differentiate five phases in which the participants systematically organize the selection process. In these phases, the participants take different roles either as shopper or as assistant caregiver; as to the later, I will distinguish between moral and instrumental assistance. The analysis demonstrates an inherent tension in the assistance during shopping activities, as it is oriented to both the incompetence that justifies the need for assistance and to the interactional construction of a competent and independent shopper.

A design may not be created instantly, without going through a process of creation. At the beginning it all starts from nothing, blank. It requires a visual research to make a visual communication. Without a visual research, the design will not have a strong meaning to be communicated. When an idea is created, the next step is to generate the idea to become a design. The first thing a designer to do is drawing a line. Line is one of the design basic elements. In the journey to make a good design, a designer requires a visual record to assist her/him in remembering what is important. A visual record contains not only visual things seen by eyes, but also the perceived things. What is felt at the moment is important because it is easier to forget than visual memory. Sense is an important element in design. A good work will easily be communicated not only by visuals but also from senses. The study was conducted as an insight into the process of making a visual record of nirmana using visual recording method in the exploration of dots and dashes. This method was used to sharpen the sensitivity of students to dots and lines. Initially, the students visited a traditional market to do the visual research. After that, they created a visual record in the form of the composition of dots and lines in nirmana to remember the taste, smell, and visual experiences.

A Self-Supported Shelter is a building that has an area about 100 m2 to 1000 m2 designated as a temporary vertical shelter for tsunami evacuation. The Self-Supported Shelter is built and managed by the community. That size of shelter is fit for mosques or mushollas (small Mosques) which is about 700 units spreading in the districts of Padang City. The Self-Supported Shelters are proposed since the number of vertical shelter is very limited at the moment. There are only four vertical shelters available in Padang City which are built by Government with capacity 2000-3000 people. Meanwhile, there is at least 600,000 people of Padang City must be evacuated in case of tsunami. There are four reasons for proposing the mosques or mushollas to be vertical shelters: First, that kind of building are available to small sub-district. Second, the land may be free to be developed. Third, they have an organization chosen by the community. Forth, it is easy to get construction funding for the religion reason. However, the community does not have guidance for developing a shelter for tsunami evacuation. This study is purposing to develop the optimum design of shelter in term of structural analysis. Here, the shelters are categorized into three types base on the area of the mosque or musholla: 10m x10m, 20m x20m and 30m x30m. Frame Structural Systems are used for the main structure of the building with or without the bracing system are involved. The optimum structural design is taken based on the strongest structure to restrain the applied loads. The soil-structure interaction analysis is also considered in to get a more reliable design. The results of the study may be used to guide the communities to build a proper shelter in their area
