The growth of mobile and wearable technologies has enabled a host of new applications, including remote situational awareness, in which a device worn by a remote partner can simulate being present in the remote location for an observer. We illustrate this idea by constructing the HomCam, a helmet-based omnidirectional video system that gives an observer the 360-degree perspective of a remote wearer. To our knowledge, the HomCam was the first wearable system that enabled real-time streaming of 360-degree video to a remote location built from commercial-of-the-shelf hardware. This paper describes related efforts, the HomCam prototype, its visual display, and an initial test of network performance. This prototype demonstrates some of the challenges of remote situation awareness and contributes to designers’ implementation of related systems.

Timely and intuitive display of network service state has very important value for network management.In this paper,a display mechanism based on Server Push is proposed and implemented.The mechanism implements the real-time and visual display of the network state changes through dynamic awareness of network state and state projection method of active updating state to the Web browse,which implement situational awareness of network service state.At present, C/S mode or the Web way with plug-in is adopted to obtain the network object status changes information, compared to which the mechanism in this paper can achieve better real-time response.

AbstractReal time monitoring and control of a modern power system has achieved significant development since the incorporation of the phasor measurement unit (PMU). Due to the time-synchronized capabilities, PMU has increased the situational awareness (SA) in a wide area measurement system (WAMS). Operator SA depends on the data pertaining to the real-time health of the grid. This is measured by PMUs and is accessible for data analytics at the data monitoring station referred to as the phasor data concentrator (PDC). Availability of the communication system and communication delay are two of the decisive factors governing the operator SA. This paper presents a pragmatic metric to assess the operator SA and ensure optimal locations for the placement of PMUs, PDC, and the underlying communication infrastructure to increase the efficacy of operator SA. The uses of digital elevation model (DEM) data of the surface topography to determine the optimal locations for the placement of the PMU, and the microwave technology for communicating synchrophasor data is another important contribution carried out in this paper. The practical power grid system of Bihar in India is considered as a case study, and extensive simulation results and analysis are presented for validating the proposed methodology.

In automated driving, the user interface plays an essential role in guiding transitions between automated and manual driving. This literature review identified 25 studies that explicitly studied the effectiveness of user interfaces in automated driving. Our main selection criterion was how the user interface (UI) affected take-over performance in higher automation levels allowing drivers to take their eyes off the road (SAE3 and SAE4). We categorized user interface (UI) factors from an automated vehicle-related information perspective. Short take-over times are consistently associated with take-over requests (TORs) initiated by the auditory modality with high urgency levels. On the other hand, take-over requests directly displayed on non-driving-related task devices and augmented reality do not affect take-over time. Additional explanations of take-over situation, surrounding and vehicle information while driving, and take-over guiding information were found to improve situational awareness. Hence, we conclude that advanced user interfaces can enhance the safety and acceptance of automated driving. Most studies showed positive effects of advanced UI, but a number of studies showed no significant benefits, and a few studies showed negative effects of advanced UI, which may be associated with information overload. The occurrence of positive and negative results of similar UI concepts in different studies highlights the need for systematic UI testing across driving conditions and driver characteristics. Our findings propose future UI studies of automated vehicle focusing on trust calibration and enhancing situation awareness in various scenarios.

Warning pedestrians of oncoming vehicles is critical to improving pedestrian safety. Due to the limitations of a pedestrian’s carrying capacity, it is crucial to find an effective solution to provide warnings to pedestrians in real-time. Limited numbers of studies focused on warning pedestrians of oncoming vehicles. Few studies focused on developing visual warning systems for pedestrians through wearable devices. In this study, various real-time projection algorithms were developed to provide accurate warning information in a timely way. A pilot study was completed to test the algorithm and the user interface design. The projection algorithms can update the warning information and correctly fit it into an easy-to-understand interface. By using this system, timely warning information can be sent to those pedestrians who have lower situational awareness or obstructed view to protect them from potential collisions. It can work well when the sightline is blocked by obstructions.

Natural disasters cause significant damage, casualties and economical losses. Twitter has been used to support prompt disaster response and management because people tend to communicate and spread information on public social media platforms during disaster events. To retrieve real-time situational awareness (SA) information from tweets, the most effective way to mine text is using natural language processing (NLP). Among the advanced NLP models, the supervised approach can classify tweets into different categories to gain insight and leverage useful SA information from social media data. However, high-performing supervised models require domain knowledge to specify categories and involve costly labelling tasks. This research proposes a guided latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA) workflow to investigate temporal latent topics from tweets during a recent disaster event, the 2020 Hurricane Laura. With integration of prior knowledge, a coherence model, LDA topics visualisation and validation from official reports, our guided approach reveals that most tweets contain several latent topics during the 10-day period of Hurricane Laura. This result indicates that state-of-the-art supervised models have not fully utilised tweet information because they only assign each tweet a single label. In contrast, our model can not only identify emerging topics during different disaster events but also provides multilabel references to the classification schema. In addition, our results can help to quickly identify and extract SA information to responders, stakeholders and the general public so that they can adopt timely responsive strategies and wisely allocate resource during Hurricane events.

To help automated vehicles learn surrounding environments via V2X communications, it is important to detect and transfer pedestrian situation awareness to the related vehicles. Based on the characteristics of pedestrians, a real-time algorithm was developed to detect pedestrian situation awareness. In the study, the heart rate variability (HRV) and phone position were used to understand the mental state and distractions of pedestrians. The HRV analysis was used to detect the fatigue and alert state of the pedestrian, and the phone position was used to define the phone distractions of the pedestrian. A Support Vector Machine algorithm was used to classify the pedestrian’s mental state. The results indicated a good performance with 86% prediction accuracy. The developed algorithm shows high applicability to detect the pedestrian’s situation awareness in real-time, which would further extend our understanding on V2X employment and automated vehicle design.
