The activities of the crude acetonic extract of red bean and its two fractions were determined using a β-carotene-linoleate model system as well as the total antioxidant activity (TAA), the total phenolics content (TPC), the DPPH radical-scavenging activity, and the reducing power assays. Results from the in vitro assays showed the highest values when tannins (fraction II) were tested. Specifically, the TAA of the tannins fraction was 4.37 mmol Trolox eq./g fraction; whereas, the crude extract and fraction I were 0.481 and 0.093 μmol Trolox eq./mg extract or fraction, respectively. The content of total phenolics in fraction II was the utmost (612 mg/g); the tannins content, assayed by the vanillin method and expressed as absorbance units at 500 nm per 1 g, was 938. RP-HPLC-PAD-MS profiling revealed the presence of 33 compounds: quercetin arabinoglucoside, quercetin rutinoside, quercetin, p-hydroxybenzoic acid, and kaempferol rutinoside were the most abundant phenolics in the extract.

Background: Curcumin, as the substantial constituent of the turmeric plant (Curcuma longa), plays a significant role in the prevention of various diseases, including diabetes. It possesses ideal structure features as enzyme inhibitor, including a flexible backbone, hydrophobic nature, and several available hydrogen bond (H-bond) donors and acceptors. Objective: The present study aimed at synthesizing several novel curcumin derivatives and further evaluation of these compounds for possible antioxidant and anti-diabetic properties along with inhibitory effect against two carbohydrate-hydrolyzing enzymes, α-amylase and α-glucosidase, as these enzymes are therapeutic targets for attenuation of postprandial hyperglycemia. Methods: Therefore, curcumin-based pyrido[2,3-d]pyrimidine derivatives were synthesized and identified using an instrumental technique like NMR spectroscopy and then screened for antioxidant and enzyme inhibitory potential. Total antioxidant activity, reducing power assay and 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH• ) radical scavenging activity were done to appraisal the antioxidant potential of these compounds in vitro. Results: Compounds L6-L9 showed higher antioxidant activity while L4, L9, L12 and especially L8 exhibited the best selectivity index (lowest α-amylase/α-glucosidase inhibition ratio). Conclusion: These antioxidant inhibitors may be potential anti-diabetic drugs, not only to reduce glycemic index but also to limit the activity of the major reactive oxygen species (ROS) producing pathways.

The aim of this study was to investigate the biological and chemical activity on two species of fungi of the genus Penicillium isolated from wastewater. On the selected species of fungi the different antioxidant activity assays were carried out: DPPH free-radical scavenging activity, total antioxidant activity, Fe2+- chelating ability and Fe3+- reducing power. Total phenol content was also determinate for ethanolic extract of mycelia. Penicillium chrysogenum ethanolic extract contained higher total phenolic content and better total antioxidant capacity as well as ferrous ion chelating ability. Penicillium fumiculosum ethanolic extract showed higher DPPH free-radical scavenging activity, as well as reducing power. Based on the obtained results it can be concluded that two types of fungi are potential new sources of natural antioxidants.

The foods from plants were known to ensure against degenerative diseases and maturing because of their antioxidant activitycredited to their high content. Information on antioxidant activity of Indian medicinal plant is abundant. To the best of our knowledge, biological properties have not been accounted in the literature for this species of . As a point, this is the first results to assess the anti-oxidant activity of the plant which belongs to the family . The antioxidant activity of Methanol, , Ethyl acetate and Aqueous extracts of E. was determined using the DPPH free radical scavenging activity, ABTS radical scavenging activity and reducing power assay. The DPPH scavenging activity showed higher activity observed in extract (63%) of E. than (54%), (44%) and aqueous (30%). the ABTS assay inhibition in extract (58%) than (43%), (38%) and aqueous (32%) extracts. The reducing power assay of different extracts was increased in extract (54%) than (40%), (34%) and aqueous (28%) extracts. Overall, the and ethyl acetate extract had higher antioxidant properties than other extract. However, in this study, extracts exhibit great potential for antioxidant activity and may be useful for their nutritional and medicinal functions.

Dibenz[b,f]azepine and its five derivatives bearing different functional groups were synthesized by known methods. The compounds thus synthesized were evaluated for antioxidant potential through different in vitro models such as (DPPH) free radical scavenging activity,ß-carotene-linoleic acid model system, reducing power assay and phosphomolybdenum method. Under our experimental condition among the synthesized compounds dibenz[b,f]azepine (a) and 10-methoxy-5H-dibenz[b,f]azepine (d) exhibited potent antioxidant activity in concentration dependent manner in all the above four methods. Butylated hydroxyl anisole (BHA) and ascorbic acid (AA) were used as the reference antioxidant compounds. The most active compounds like dibenz[b,f]azepine and its methoxy group substituent have shown more promising antioxidant and radical scavengers compared to the standards like BHA and ascorbic acid. It is conceivable from the studies that the tricyclic amines,i.e. dibenz[b, f]azepine and some of its derivatives are effective in their antioxidant activity properties.

Coleonema album, a member of the South African ‘Fynbos’ biome, was evaluated for its antioxidant and free radical scavenging activity. Ethanol- and acetone-based extracts from plant material obtained from two different geographical areas were analysed. A bioassay-guided fractionation methodology was followed for screening of active compounds. The 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH)-TLC method revealed the presence of a number of antioxidants which were quantified by the DPPH-spectrophotometric assay and the oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) assay. The C. album extracts possessed significant in vitro antioxidant activity, a large portion of which appeared to be contributed by the phenolic compounds. In contrast, the reducing power of the extracts could not be correlated with the observed antioxidant activity. Identification and structural information of the active components were obtained by a combination of preparative TLC and LC-MS which revealed the presence of coumarin aglycones and glycosides. The results of this study indicate that C. album contains strong antioxidants that warrant further investigation into the relationship between the structure and activity of the active coumarin metabolites.

The present study was designed to confirm the traditional use of the fruits of Ficus hispida Linn. (Moraceae) as an antioxidant agent. Fruits of the plant extracted with methanol and crude methanol extract (CME) were further fractionated with n-hexane, chloroform, and ethyl acetate. All the fractions, n-hexane (NHF), chloroform (CHF), ethyl acetate (EAF), aqueous (AQF) and CME were preliminary screened for in vitro antioxidant activity and total phenolic and total flavonoid content. In DPPH radical scavenging assay, CME exhibited highest scavenging activity (IC50 = 11.20 µg/mL) as compared to other fractions. In this assay, IC50 of reference standard BHT was 5.10 µg/mL. The reducing power of the samples was in the order as AQF > CME > CHF > EAF > NHF. The results for hydrogen peroxide scavenging activity indicated that CME, EAF and AQF had almost the same scavenging activity except NHF. Total antioxidant capacity of CME and other fractions were ranked as CHF > AQF > CME > EAF > NHF.  In the assay of antioxidant constituents (total phenol and total flavonoids content), the CME had highest phenolic and flavonoids content. The results indicate that Ficus hispida fruits could be considered as a potential source of natural antioxidant.

Phenolic compounds were extracted from <I>Mallotus philippinensi</I> bark using methanol. Six fractions (I–VI) were separated from the extract on a Sephadex LH-20 column using ethanol and acetone-water as the mobile phases and were evaluated for their total antioxidant activity, antiradical activity against DPPH<sup>•</sup> (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical), and reducing power. The total phenolics and tannin contents in the fractions were determined. The content of total phenolics in the fractions ranged from 54 mg/g (fraction I) to 927 mg/g (fraction VI). Condensed tannins were detected in fractions II–VI. Total antioxidant activity (TAA) of phenolic fractions of <I>Mallotus philipinensis</I> bark extract ranged from 0.58 mmol Trolox/g (fraction I) to 6.82 mmol Trolox/g (fraction IV). Fraction IV also showed the strongest antiradical activity against DPPH<sup>•</sup> and reducing power. Several phenolic constituents in the fractions were detected by RP-HPLC using a gradient solvent system with UV-DAD detection.

The aerial parts of Micromeria juliana (L.) Bentham ex Reichb. were extracted with light petroleum, acetone and methanol, successively. The antioxidant activity of different concentrations of the extracts was evaluated using different antioxidant tests, namely total antioxidant (lipid peroxidation inhibition activity), DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) radical scavenging, ferric reducing power, and metal chelating. Total antioxidant activity was determined using the β-carotene-linoleic acid assay. Unexpectedly, the light petroleum extract exhibited strong lipid peroxidation inhibition activity. The extract was fractionated on a silica gel column and the antioxidant activity of the fractions was determined by the β-carotene-linoleic assay at 25 μg/mL concentration. The fractions that exhibited more than 50% inhibition activity were analysed by GC and GC/MS; thus, the structure of fourteen compounds were elucidated. In addition, acetyl- and butyrylcholinesterase inhibitory activities of the extracts were also determined in vitro. The light petroleum and acetone extracts were found to have mild butyrylcholinesterase inhibitory activity.

Objective: : The objective of the present study was to measure antioxidant activity and to evaluate the phytochemical constitution of Helichrysum lacteum growing in Algeria. Methods: : The structure elucidation of the isolated compounds was performed by spectroscopic methods. Antioxidant activity of the extracts the crude extracts (PE, EtOAc, and n-BuOH) and pure compound (noryangonin (3)) was investigated by 5 methods, including DPPH free radical scavenging activity, reducing power and ferric thiocyanate methods, hydrogen peroxide scavenging capacity, and total antioxidant activity by phosphomolybdate assay. Results: : The chemical investigation of the EtOAc extract of the aerial parts of H. lacteum led to the isolation of two flavonoids, astragalin (1) and isoquercitrin (2), together with a styryl pyrone, noryangonin (3), and a cyclobutane dimer, achyrodimer C (4) as well as two triterpenoid compounds, β-sitosterol (5) and oleanolic acid (6). The highest phenolic and flavonoid contents were detected in the ethyl acetate extract. Noryangonin exhibited the highest antioxidant activity than those of the references and all the tested extracts, with a value of IC50 at 1.45±0.44 μg/mL in DPPH scavenging. In hydrogen peroxide scavenging essay, the results revealed that EtOAc extract exhibited the highest percent inhibition (63.15 %) as compared to the ascorbic acid (63.36 %) at the concentration of 100 μg/mL. In the phosphomolybdenum method, the EtOAc extract showed the strongest activity (36.85±0.02 μg EAA/mg ex) as compared to those of n-BuOH and PE extracts. Conclusion: : The antioxidant property shown in these findings needs further investigation, especially with the pure compound (3).

The total anthocyanin content (TAC) of pigment extracted from fruits of Padus racemosa and Padus virginiana was determined by pH-differential method. TAC in pigment from fruits of Padus racemosa was higher than that in Padus virginiana. The vitro antioxidant activity of the two kinds of pigment was evaluated by different assays, including DPPH• assay, ABTS•+assay, OH• assay and reducing power assay. The results showed that except for reducing power, pigment from fruit of Padus racemosa showed stronger ABTS•+, DPPH• and OH• radical scavenging activity than pigment from fruit of Padus virginiana. The study concluded that pigment extracted from fruit of Padus racemosa and Padus virginiana can be used as a source of natural antioxidants instead of synthetic antioxidants.
