This case study presents the process of developing a multi-entity Research Coalition to evaluate the new Parkland Hospital. The field of evidence-based design has made progress in systematically investigating relationships between healthcare facility design and a range of human outcomes. Yet healthcare facility evaluation is not typically included in the scope of building contracts. Lack of clear responsibility for evaluation and limited funding have been long-term barriers that the industry has yet to overcome. Firms engaged in design research at Parkland Hospital agreed with hospital representatives to collaborate on an integrated facility evaluation. Each participating entity contributed resources toward the effort. To formalize shared goals and priorities, the group developed a Research Coalition Charter. Goals included streamlining evaluation efforts to minimize burden on the hospital, leveraging multiple expertise areas to vet research aims and approaches, contributing knowledge to inform healthcare design, and innovating a model for multi-firm collaboration. The Coalition also developed guidelines for sharing data and disseminating research findings. To date, the Research Coalition has achieved key milestones including institutional review board exemption, data use and research collaboration agreements, and data collection. The research aims encompass patient and staff outcomes hypothesized to improve in the new facility. Both primary and secondary data are being analyzed to test the hypotheses. Publications of findings are forthcoming. Collaborative research among competitors may be a viable approach to realizing evaluation that is critical to learning for healthcare facility decision makers and design practitioners.

Our purpose is to present and test a typology of land reform theories as a means of understanding and interrogating the motives behind land reform and to better equip land administrators and policymakers to enact land reform programs that are appropriate for their contexts. Here, land reform is understood to include the related concepts of land redistribution, land restitution, land tenure reform and land administration reform. The theory typology thus has application for land restitution programs specifically operating in the global South. The continuum of theories is derived from literature and tested through a multiple case study of land reform in Nigeria, Mozambique, and South Africa, drawing from a combination of primary and secondary data. The findings suggest an over-reliance on replacement theories in all three contexts, although the Mozambican experience draws on theories towards the middle of the continuum (the adaptation theories). This is recommended as the most viable approach for the context.

Digital food technologies carry promise for better food futures but they are often problematic in their impact on food cultures. While proponents suggest that food-tech products such as smart kitchenware or diet personalisation services can support efficient food practices, critics highlight various risks. This paper presents our findings from Edible Speculations, a long-term design research project exploring the contested space of food-tech innovation through a series of speculative design (SD) events situated in everyday public contexts. We illustrate the opportunities and limits of eventful SD in supporting critical engagements with food-tech issues through an Edible Speculations case study called the Parlour of Food Futures. Our discussion of selected Parlour events can inform readers interested in food-tech themes as well as those keen on experimenting with eventful approaches to SD research.

Costa Rica has pledged to become the first nation to become carbon neutral. This event raises the important question of how to understand this contemporary form of climate politics, given that Costa Rica has made an almost negligible contribution to the problem of global climate change. To understand this pledge, a case study spanning about 200 years situates the pledge within the country’s unique historical profile. An analysis of interview data, archival research, and secondary data reveals that the pledge is the latest instance in Costa Rica’s unusual political tradition. This political tradition dates back to the area’s experience as a Spanish colony and as a newly independent nation. Several events, including the abolition of the army, the work on green development, and being awarded a Nobel Peace Prize were all foundational in forming Costa Rica’s tradition as a place that leads by example and stands for peace and protection of nature. The carbon neutral pledge extends the political tradition that has been established through these earlier events. This case highlights the importance of understanding contemporary environmental politics through an analysis of long-term, historical data.

ABSTRACT: Bussiness competition in the textile and garment industry is now increasingly high, need to be managed properly, especially it’s financial performance. This study aims to determine the effect of capital structure on financial performance on textile and garment companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange in 2016-2018 both partially and simultaneously. Capital structure is measured by Debt to Asset Ratio (DAR) (X1), Debt to Equity Ratio (DER) (X2), and Long term Debt to Equity Ratio (LtDER)(X3). Company performance is measured by Return on Investment (ROI) (Y). This research is a quantitative case study. Secondary data obtained from the annual financial statetments. The population of the research are 21 companies. The number of samples in this study were 8 companies. The analysis technique used is multiple regression to test the effect of independent variables on the dependent variable. The results showed that partially DAR and DER variables significantly influence the ROI, while the LtDER variable has no significant effect on ROI. All three variables have a significant effect on ROI simultaneousl.

This case study examines the phenomenon of dakwahtainment, a concept amalgamating Islamic propagation and entertainment. It focuses on the highly popular daily live programme entitled Hati ke Hati Bersama Mamah Dedeh (literally: Heart to Heart with Mother Dedeh). The programme involves a female penceramah (preacher) providing taws}iyyah or nasehat (spiritual advice) to the jamaah (congregation), while offering religious verdicts on various aspects of life confronting Indonesian women. One of the main pillars of the programme’s success has been its tightly observed winning formula held dearly by the producer and the creative team, which stipulates 70% tuntunan (spiritual guidance) and 30% tontonan (entertainment viewing). Based on an exploratory, single case study design, research findings suggest that the Hati ke Hati Bersama Mamah Dedeh programme is constructed on a gendered understanding that is inconsistent and contradictory, which tend to simultaneously empower and disempower Muslim women viewers.[Tulisan ini merupakan studi kasus mengenai dakwahtainmen yang mempertemukan dakwah pada satu sisi dan hiburan pada sisi lainnya.

As societies around the world experience ageing, the issue of providing required levels of health and social care for elderly people is becoming more urgent. Since governments are unlikely to be able to provide the level of care required without significant increases in taxation levels, there arises a need for private sector responses. This case study considers the provision of long-term residential care for people in Thailand and the business opportunities this provides. It concerns in particular the Golden Age Residential Healthcare facility, which is located in a country which has prioritized the wellness industry as a sector of potential high growth in the economy. Relatively low labour costs combined with good medical education and investment in medical facilities mean Thailand is a potentially important location for elderly healthcare. However, there are some practical and commercial issues to overcome before success can be realized and this case study focuses on these issues.

E-government development has put pressure on public organizations to work with electronic information. Records from complex e-government services have to be captured and managed in order to be accessible both in the present and in the long term. The data and analysis presented is based on a multiple case study of nine Swedish local governments (municipalities) identified as good ex-amples of best practice of e-government. An analytical model for recordkeeping awareness in three arenas: the legal, the political and the workplace has been created in order to identify how political decisions and new technology impact on professional archivists’ practice and status. The research findings demonstrate a gap between the legal and workplace arenas in both directions caused by lack of recordkeeping awareness primarily within the political arena. Archivists´ profes-sional status seems to be limited, which opens up possibilities for other profes-sional groups to replace them.

This paper presents findings from a qualitative case study that explored long term integration of internationally educated nurses in an Ontario healthcare facility. Using critical social theory as the philosophical underpinnings for this research, we selected the case based on the hospital’s history of employing and supporting internationally educated professionals. Data sources included: documents review, twenty-eight interviews, socio-demographic survey and five focus groups involving IENs and other stakeholders. An overarching theme points to a ‘two-way’ notion of workplace integration whereby efforts are required on the part of the employer as well as the IENs. An in-depth analysis of the data reveals sub-processes of two-way integration: respecting diversity and difference, adopting inclusive practices and striving to achieve equity. Challenges in achieving two-way integration are discussed. Implications for nursing leaders to tap into IENs’ diverse talents for the benefit of their local healthcare systems are highlighted.
