Costa Rica has pledged to become the first nation to become carbon neutral. This event raises the important question of how to understand this contemporary form of climate politics, given that Costa Rica has made an almost negligible contribution to the problem of global climate change. To understand this pledge, a case study spanning about 200 years situates the pledge within the country’s unique historical profile. An analysis of interview data, archival research, and secondary data reveals that the pledge is the latest instance in Costa Rica’s unusual political tradition. This political tradition dates back to the area’s experience as a Spanish colony and as a newly independent nation. Several events, including the abolition of the army, the work on green development, and being awarded a Nobel Peace Prize were all foundational in forming Costa Rica’s tradition as a place that leads by example and stands for peace and protection of nature. The carbon neutral pledge extends the political tradition that has been established through these earlier events. This case highlights the importance of understanding contemporary environmental politics through an analysis of long-term, historical data.

This case study presents the process of developing a multi-entity Research Coalition to evaluate the new Parkland Hospital. The field of evidence-based design has made progress in systematically investigating relationships between healthcare facility design and a range of human outcomes. Yet healthcare facility evaluation is not typically included in the scope of building contracts. Lack of clear responsibility for evaluation and limited funding have been long-term barriers that the industry has yet to overcome. Firms engaged in design research at Parkland Hospital agreed with hospital representatives to collaborate on an integrated facility evaluation. Each participating entity contributed resources toward the effort. To formalize shared goals and priorities, the group developed a Research Coalition Charter. Goals included streamlining evaluation efforts to minimize burden on the hospital, leveraging multiple expertise areas to vet research aims and approaches, contributing knowledge to inform healthcare design, and innovating a model for multi-firm collaboration. The Coalition also developed guidelines for sharing data and disseminating research findings. To date, the Research Coalition has achieved key milestones including institutional review board exemption, data use and research collaboration agreements, and data collection. The research aims encompass patient and staff outcomes hypothesized to improve in the new facility. Both primary and secondary data are being analyzed to test the hypotheses. Publications of findings are forthcoming. Collaborative research among competitors may be a viable approach to realizing evaluation that is critical to learning for healthcare facility decision makers and design practitioners.

In view of the lack of coordination or guidance of green road concept and relevant evaluation to encourage sustainability, we redefined the concept of green road and its characteristics, and then reviewed some cross-sector targets of various departments related to green development. The history of green road related policies and studies were reviewed, and a green road evaluation indices system were established with 2 broad categories-compulsory and selective. The compulsory category contains 8 indices; and the selective category includes 76 indices, which are divided into 7 categories and 31 subcategories, covering design, construction and operation. In order to improve the evaluation continually, rating principles, grading methods and main reference literature were given. Then we selected 30 indices and design in a questionnaire to trial evaluation, and 11 projects of Hubei province were collected and used for analysis. Finally, based on the long-term and complexity of the evaluation system, we suggest some key improving strategies of green road evaluation in China. The establishment of the green road system is an attempt to bridge the requirements of different departments, and to stimulate the progressing technology to meet various challenges.

This study aims to analyze the ability of its own capital owned by Bisi International Tbk to guarantee all of its debts. So the approach used is a case study. Data collection is done by documentation method and the data taken is secondary data. The data comes from the 2017- 2019 financial statements. The analysis technique in this study uses financial ratios, namely comparing total debt with own capital. The results of research and studies reveal that the company's financial condition, especially the guarantee of capital on debt, tends to be in good condition. This can be seen from the amount of each rupiah of own capital that is able to cover every rupiah of costs. This research needs to be expanded by analyzing the relationship and the influence of other components that affect the improvement of the company's financial performance.   Keywords: Current Debt, Long-Term Debt, Own Capital

Climate change is emerging as one of the most miscellaneous expressions of the global change nowadays. It potentially affects ecosystems including water resources. The change of climate also has significant impacts on the availability of water, as well as the quality and quantity of water that is available and accessible. Aiming at studying the effect of climate change on water resources, 25 years collected secondary data of both climatic and hydro-meteorological stations were used and Statistical analysis was performed using ORIGIN PRO 8.0 Software. The study linked the surface elevation of Lake Kivu variation with respect to climate change where the level of the lake matches to pluviometric and anomalies values. Finally, the statistical analysis could not directly link the temperature variation with that of surface water level in the lake. Climate change is real and happening now and surely affects water resources among others making an urgent need to control anthropogenic inputs into the atmosphere, one of the factors forcing climate change.

ABSTRACT: Bussiness competition in the textile and garment industry is now increasingly high, need to be managed properly, especially it’s financial performance. This study aims to determine the effect of capital structure on financial performance on textile and garment companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange in 2016-2018 both partially and simultaneously. Capital structure is measured by Debt to Asset Ratio (DAR) (X1), Debt to Equity Ratio (DER) (X2), and Long term Debt to Equity Ratio (LtDER)(X3). Company performance is measured by Return on Investment (ROI) (Y). This research is a quantitative case study. Secondary data obtained from the annual financial statetments. The population of the research are 21 companies. The number of samples in this study were 8 companies. The analysis technique used is multiple regression to test the effect of independent variables on the dependent variable. The results showed that partially DAR and DER variables significantly influence the ROI, while the LtDER variable has no significant effect on ROI. All three variables have a significant effect on ROI simultaneousl.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to investigate how executives can rapidly gain employee acceptance for strategic change through reciprocal sensegiving. The author draw on a processual case study of a transformational European merger to study this question, highlighting the properties of reciprocity in making sense of urgent strategic change, then developing them through the lens of a gift exchange. Design/methodology/approach – The author draws on several qualitative methods to study sensegiving and sensemaking processes in Alpha and Beta from 2011 to 2014: insider-outsider team meetings at the beginning, mid-way and at the end of the merger integration process, ethnographic field notes during a four-month research internship, one focus group meeting with Alpha and Beta managers after the announcement of the redistribution of managerial positions, interviews with a carefully selected sample of top and middle managers, participant observation in key sensegiving meetings with top managers and “custodians,” triangulation with secondary data from the database Factiva, and finally follow-up insider corroboration of the findings by the research intern who took up a management position at Alpha in 2014. Findings – Likening executive and employee sensegiving to a gift-giving and gift-returning exchange, the author elucidates how executives induce employees to quickly “give in” to strategic change imperatives. the author single out the key third party role of custodians of reciprocity in the mechanism, using the metaphor of the Trojan horse to illustrate its executive use and point to the underexplored darker side of prosocial sensegiving dynamics. Research limitations/implications – Further research should clarify the long-term advantages and disadvantages of the mechanism. The Trojan horse mechanism possibly sacrifices long-term reciprocity for short-term purposes. Following the example of executives in this case study, use of the Trojan horse mechanism should be followed by attention to socio-political balance concerns, including new procedures that clarify the link between value creation aims and employees’ collective contribution. Without such a cohesion-building exercise, employees’ feelings of procedural injustice may build up, resulting in negative reciprocity in subsequent change projects. Practical implications – The work indicates that a leader’s visionary credentials are not the main source of her norm-shaping power in a project of urgent strategic change. Visionary credentials are welcomed by the dominant group of employees as long as they are framed as a symbolic management exercise that will not substantially impact socio-political balance. Substantively, employees make sense of the justice of urgent strategic change primarily through the lens of custodians and their “power from the past.” Social implications – All in all, executives should use the Trojan horse mechanism sparingly, in contexts of urgent strategic change and institutionalized employee behavior. Working with sources and voices of resistance from lower levels of management is more likely to yield symbiotic integration benefits. Originality/value – Applied to the problem of rapid strategic change in a non-crisis context, the Trojan horse mechanism is a solution to the question: how can executives avoid lengthy socio-political confrontations and quickly induce employee ownership of painful strategic changes?

An emotional relationship between business and consumers can create positive aspects. However, complexity of emotional processes can become a challenge concerning the long-term growth of companies pursuing to implement such a strategy. Therefore, this study aspires to evidence possible fragilities of organizational strategies, which create value through emotional aspects. Consequently, we conducted a case study of the Canadian company Cirque du Soleil, with data collection consisting of: an interview with the firm’s head publicist; in addition to interviews undertaken by secondary data; three months spent amongst one of the company’s shows; and by secondary data from both the electronic and press media. Data analysis and interpretation were established by using the content analysis technique. It was acknowledged that despite the rapid growth and success of the company, there are still certain challenges relating to the continued growth associated with the consolidation of emotional relationships.

Abstract Purpose: This study examined how social and cultural influences are affecting the government of Trinidad & Tobago's decision-making policies as it relates to the growth of the LGBTQ traveler tourism segment, which is currently threatening the sustainability and competitiveness of the country's tourism industry. This study also aimed to add to the literature on gay tourism in that nation and region as a whole. Research methodology: Data for this research were collected from various sources, including existing literature on the industry's competitiveness, followed by a review of official government surveys, reports and other media documents, and academic research literature. Results: The study's findings reveal that the leaders' lack of failure to understand the economic power of the LGBTQ traveler segment is short-sighted and has negative effects on the fragile nature of the industry's ability to compete globally, lack of long-term vision of the leaders. Limitations: This study relied on secondary data, limiting direct views from individuals in the local communities due to the country being on lockdown since March of 2020 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Contribution: This study makes a few suggestions for further improvement, such as leaders in that nation deciphering existing buggery laws publicly, to show urgency and commitment to this vulnerable traveler segment; conducting robust discussions with various interest groups that are presenting barriers to changes that could result in a more robust industry, and finally, consider the use of images of members of the LGBTQ community in all marketing promotions.
