Objective: Although numerous studies have assessed patient satisfaction in diverse settings, in the realm of nursing surgical care, standardization of measurement for patient experience and satisfaction is lacking. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess the satisfaction of surgical patients with perioperative nursing care. Method: A descriptive cross-sectional survey was conducted. Sociodemographic characteristics and clinical data were recorded. Patient satisfaction was measured with a modified version of the La Monica–Oberst Patient Satisfaction Scale (LOPSS-12). Results: 150 patients (73 women, 49% and 77 men; 51%) completed the survey. The mean age was 63 years (standard deviation, 16 years). The mean overall satisfaction score on the La Monica–Oberst Patient Satisfaction Scale was 3.17 (standard deviation, 0.21). The scale showed adequate content validity (Lawshe’s Content Validity Index was 0.76) and moderate reliability (Cronbach’s alpha = 0.70). Two variables—patient sex and the presence of comorbidities—were significantly associated with overall satisfaction: men and patients with comorbidities were more satisfied with the care received. Patients with university studies were significantly more likely than patients with less education to consider nurses “impatient,” but also considered the nurses’ advice to be “useful.” Patients with hospital-acquired complications were more likely to perceive nurses to be “more interested in completing tasks than in listening,” although they also felt that nurses worked “conscientiously.” Conclusion: Overall, patient satisfaction with perioperative nursing care was good. This study identified several areas of nursing care in need of improvement, particularly the need to spend more time with patients and to keep them better informed about the perioperative process. The modified La Monica–Oberst Patient Satisfaction Scale is suitable for measuring surgical patient satisfaction with perioperative nursing care. The findings presented here may be of value to nursing administrators, educators, and nursing care providers to improve patient satisfaction and to develop strategies to prevent patient dissatisfaction.

PurposePromoting patient satisfaction is crucial for healthcare quality improvement. However, literature on patient satisfaction with nursing care in Ghana is limited. The aim of this study was to assess patient satisfaction with perioperative nursing care in Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, the largest tertiary hospital in Ghana.Design/methodology/approachThe study was a cross-sectional study. A sample of one hundred (n = 100) in-patients in the surgical department were interviewed. Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS), version 22, was used to analyze the data. The results were presented using univariate, bivariate and multivariate analyses.FindingsIt was found that majority of the respondents were males (53%), employed (56%) and insured (85%). It was also found that eight in ten respondents were satisfied with the perioperative nursing care. Overall patient satisfaction with perioperative nursing care was significantly associated with information provision (p < 0.001), nurse–patient relationship (p < 0.001), fear and concern (p < 0.05) and discomfort and need (p < 0.05). At the multivariate level, overall patient satisfaction was significantly influenced by nurse–patient relationship (β = 0.430, p = 0.002).Originality/valueThere is limited literature on nursing care in surgical departments and rarely are patients' views considered in assessing quality of perioperative care, especially in Low- and Middle- Income Countries (LMICs). This study is a modest contribution to the literature on patient satisfaction with perioperative nursing care in Ghana.

AbstractPlatelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections are often used for the treatment of knee osteoarthritis (OA), despite clinical value and cost-effectiveness not being definitely established. PRP injections are considered as a potential means of reducing pain and improving function in patients with knee OA, in the hope of delaying or avoiding the need for surgical intervention. Centers that offer PRP injections usually charge patients out of pocket and directly market services. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to quantify the current (1) prices and (2) marketed clinical efficacy of autologous PRP injections for knee OA. A prospective cross-sectional study was performed based on 286 centers identified in the United States offering PRP injections for knee OA. A total of 179 (73.4%) centers were successfully contacted via e-mail or phone, using a simulated 52-year-old male patient with knee OA. Scripted questions were asked by the simulated patient to determine the current marketed prices and clinical efficacy, either reported as “good results” or “symptomatic improvement,” claimed by each treating center. The mean price for a single unilateral knee same-day PRP injection was $714 with a standard deviation of $144 (95% confidence interval [CI]: $691–737, n = 153). The mean claim of clinical efficacy was 76% with a standard deviation of 11% (95% CI: 73.5–78.3%, n = 84). Out of the 84 clinics, 10 claimed “90 to 100% efficacy,” 27 claimed “80 to 90%,” 29 claimed “70 to 80%,” 9 claimed “60 to 70%,” 8 claimed “50 to 60%,” and 1 claimed “40 to 60%.” These findings provide a unique perspective on the PRP market for the treatment of knee OA that is valuable to physicians and health care providers in providing better education to patients on the associated costs and purported clinical benefits of PRP injections.

Background: Gujarat Medical Education Research society started GMERS medical college and tertiary care Hospital in Valsad since last 4 years. As civil Hospital is converted in to tertiary care hospital and many of the departments running in different buildings so, searching the concern OPDs is difficult for patients, waiting time and patients satisfaction is important to avail the services. Patient satisfaction is one of the important goals of any health system, but it is difficult to measure the satisfaction. Aims & objectives were (1) to study the waiting time at various Out Patient Department (OPDs). and various investigation; (2) To study the accessibility of various department of hospital;  (3) To study the patient satisfaction on hospital process, behavior of hospital staff and treatment cost.Methods: This was a cross sectional observational study conducted in G.M.E.R.S. Hospital-Valsad for the period of 2 months and total 135 patients were interviewed availing the OPD Services.Results: The mean age of patient attending the OPD was 30.31±15.65 years and majority of them are female patient (54.07%). Hospital staff (48.89%) was main source of guidance for searching the OPDs for consulting the doctor. 54.07% patient registered 20 min after standing in queue. The mean waiting time was 12.16±2.35 min. 94.07% and 98.52% patients were satisfied with treatment cost and behavior of staff respectively.Conclusions: Many patients face the difficulties in finding the various departments. On an average 12 minutes of waiting time outside the various O.P.Ds. They were also satisfied with the treatment cost and behaviour of hospital staff.

Objectives: We aim to evaluate the level of satisfaction after total knee arthroplastyprocedure in the patient population at a tertiary care hospital in Karachi, Pakistan, and to assessthe relationship between patient satisfaction and the outcome based on traditional scores.Methods: Study Design: Case series for determination of patient satisfaction. Period: Oneyear duration from April 2015 to May 2016. Setting: Tertiary care centre in Karachi, Pakistan.The inclusion criteria was all the patients with late stage osteoarthritis of the knee joint andunderwent total knee arthroplasty at our institute. Data was analyzed using SPSS version 22.Results: A total of n= 102 patients were included in the study while n= 109 knee surgerieswere done in total (n= 95 patients had unilateral surgery, while n= 7 patients had bilateralsurgeries on both the knee joints) n= 58 patients were females while n= 44 patients weremales, the median age was 60 years, patients had a mean body mass index (BMI) of 27kg/m2. Of the total surgeries performed n= 100 were in the satisfaction group while n= 9 were inthe dissatisfaction group. The majority of the patients reported that they would recommend theprocedure. The co morbid conditions did not affect the patient’s level of satisfaction having ap value of 0.678. In the dissatisfied group, there was no significant difference when it comes togender, the mean age of patients in the dissatisfaction group was higher than the mean age ofpatients in the satisfaction. We found that WOMAC scores for functioning and the final WOMACscores were correlated with patient satisfaction and that was statistically significant, similarlySF-36 form patients were satisfied about the improvement in the physical health while they didnot improve the mental health aspect of their disease. Conclusion: According to our studytotal knee arthroplasty is an effective treatment for osteoarthritis of the knee, patient satisfactionis correlated with post-operative WOMAC function and overall scores, and SF-36 physicalcomponent. It is important to keep patients expectations in check through proper counseling.

Patient satisfaction with nursing is an important indicator of the quality of the nursing services. This study used The Patient Perception of Hospital Experience With Nursing (PPHEN) scale (Dozier, Kitzman, Ingersol, Holmberg, & Schultz, 2001) to determine the nursing care perception of patients in a Turkish tertiary care hospital. The study design was descriptive comparative and used convenience sampling. In total, 566 patients volunteered to take part in the study. The patient satisfaction level with nursing was found to be below average; patient satisfaction showed no meaningful differences between genders, marital status, or the clinics where the patient was hospitalized, but significantly higher levels of satisfaction were found with higher levels of education, younger age, higher incomes, and being employed. Overall, the patients considered that nursing care needs improvement, especially in terms of the provision of information and psychosocial support.

Objectives: To evaluate the standard deviation of the nasalance scores in patients having normal and abnormal nasal resonance and to determine its potential value for clinical use. Additionally, the mean nasalance scores were examined across varying degrees of hypernasality. Design: Prospective study design. Setting: Pediatric tertiary care hospital. Patients: One hundred and forty-eight subjects, ranging in age from 4;0 to 37;0 years, having repaired cleft lip and/or palate and normal resonance, inconsistent, mild, or moderate/severe hypernasality. Procedures: Oral-nasal acoustic measurements were made using the Nasometer. The standard deviation and mean nasalance scores were calculated for subjects reading three standard passages (Zoo Passage, Rainbow Passage, Nasal Sentences). Results: The major finding in this study showed that the standard deviation score cannot distinguish speakers beyond a gross normal and abnormal resonance diagnostic category. The values obtained could not be used to distinguish among the varying degrees of hypernasality. A secondary finding was that a mean nasalance score in the high 20s could be used to differentiate speakers with borderline velopharyngeal function from those who were non-nasal. Conclusions: In general, the standard deviation value serves little overall clinical utility; however, it may be of benefit in some specific clinical situations. In support of previous research, the mean nasalance score continues to be the best measure of nasalance. It should serve as a supplement to but not a sub stitute for clinical judgments.

ABSTRACT Objectives: to analyze the perioperative thirst concept for the development of a new diagnostic structure according to NANDA International. Methods: a concept analysis study based on the framework proposed by Walker and Avant, instrumentalized through an integrative literature review based on SCOPUS, CINAHL, PUBMED, LILACS, and WOS. The elaboration of the diagnostic structure followed NANDA International guidelines. Results: 41 studies were analyzed revealing that perioperative thirst is prevalent and intense, having visceral and behavioral attributes as the core of the concept. Antecedents indicate that surgical patients are vulnerable to thirst; and consequents 16 signs and symptoms were organized and model cases were developed. A diagnostic structure has been developed for perioperative thirst. Final Considerations: concept analysis allowed language standardization that describes thirsty patients, helping the identification, planning of actions and communication of perioperative nursing care.

Background: Severe acute malnutrition (SAM) places extraordinary challenges in the way of survival, growth and development of the child under five years of age. Our aim was to evaluate the functioning and performance of facility based management of SAM children admitted in the nutrition rehabilitation centre (NRC) and to identify the existing bottlenecks in the NRC.Methods: Children above 1 month and less than 5 years of age with severe acute malnutrition were included during the study period. Demographic details of the SAM children, clinical features during admission were recorded. Anthropometric measurements like MUAC, weight, height/length and WHZ scores were taken at admission and compared with the findings at discharge. Statistical analysis: the data after collection, compilation was analysed by SPSS.Results: Majority 277 (78.47%) of them belonged to rural areas. 300 (85%) SAM children were referred by medical officers. Bilateral oedema was recorded in 12 (17.9%) admitted children during 2014-2015, 22 (17.9%) children in 2015-2016 and in 37 (22.7%) children during 2016-2017. There was significant improvement in the mean weight (kg) and mean MUAC (cm) at discharge was in comparison to the weight and MUAC of the children at admission and this difference in increase in the mean weight and MUAC were found to be statistically significant.Conclusions: Implementation of WHO feeding guidelines resulted in adequate weight gain of inpatient malnourished children, however the frontline workers in the community and health care providers of PHCs should be trained and given hands on training for early identification and referral of SAM cases.
