Abstract We aimed to perform three-dimensional imaging of the underlying geothermal system to a depth of 2 km using magnetotellurics (MT) at around the Yugama crater, the Kusatsu–Shirane Volcano, Japan, which is known to have frequent phreatic eruptions. We deployed 91 MT sites focusing around the peak area of 2 km × 2 km with typical spacings of 200 m. The full tensor impedances and the magnetic transfer functions were inverted, using an unstructured tetrahedral finite element code to include the topographic effect. The final model showed (1) low-permeability bell-shaped clay cap (C1) as the near-surface conductor, (2) brine reservoir as a deep conductor (C3) at a depth of 1.5 km from the surface, and (3) a vertical conductor (C2) connecting the deep conductor to the clay cap which implies an established fluid path. The columnar high-seismicity distribution to the east of the C2 conductor implies that the flushed vapor and magmatic gas was released from the brine reservoir by breaking the silica cap at the brittle–ductile transition. The past magnetization/demagnetization sources and the inflation source of the 2014 unrest are located just below the clay cap, consistent with the clay capped geothermal model underlain by brine reservoir. The resistivity model showed the architecture of the magmatic–hydrothermal system, which can explain the episodic volcanic unrest.

Flexible pavement design procedures use maximum mechanistic strains to predict service life via empirical transfer functions. The conventional method of using predefined point locations for potential damage may not accurately represent realistic pavement scenarios. For instance, flexible airfield pavement analysis mainly considers the critical strain at the bottom of the asphalt concrete (AC), which may not characterize near-surface cracking potential. In lieu of point strains, domain analysis, a new method, accounts for the multi-axial behavior of pavements, as inherently excited by three-dimensional (3-D) and nonuniform aircraft tire–pavement contact stresses. Initially applied on highway pavements considering truck tire loading, this approach is an initial breakthrough for implementing domain analysis on flexible airfield pavements; in this study, A-380 and F-16 landing gear tire loads were considered. As anticipated, speed and temperature had significant influence on cumulative domain stress and strain ratios. The decrease in speed and increase in temperature not only increased the cumulative ratios up to 1.81, but nonlinearity of the problem became more prevalent at worst loading conditions (8 kph and 45°C). Minimal difference in ratios for F-16 cases suggests that the National Airport Pavement Test Facility pavement structure became less sensitive to conditions under low loads. Point response analysis revealed that critical strains were not significantly influenced by the tire-inflation pressure, for example, tensile strain at the bottom of the AC only increased up to 13.6% (considering 8 kph speed), whereas domain analysis quantified the increase with respect to 3-D stress or strain states.

A thermomechanical coupling between a hyper-viscoelastic tire and a representative pavement layer was conducted to assess the effect of various temperature profiles on the mechanical behavior of a rolling truck tire. The two deformable bodies, namely the tire and pavement layer, were subjected to steady-state-uniform and non-uniform temperature profiles to identify the significance of considering temperature as a variable in contact-stress prediction. A myriad of ambient, internal air, and pavement-surface conditions were simulated, along with combinations of applied tire load, tire-inflation pressure, and traveling speed. Analogous to winter, the low temperature profiles induced a smaller tire-pavement contact area that resulted in stress localization. On the other hand, under high temperature conditions during the summer, higher tire deformation resulted in lower contact-stress magnitudes owing to an increase in the tire-pavement contact area. In both conditions, vertical and longitudinal contact stresses are impacted, while transverse contact stresses are relatively less affected. This behavior, however, may change under a non-free-rolling condition, such as braking, accelerating, and cornering. By incorporating temperature into the tire-pavement interaction model, changes in the magnitude and distribution of the three-dimensional contact stresses were manifested. This would have a direct implication on the rolling resistance and near-surface behavior of flexible pavements.

Magnetotelluric (MT), radiomagnetotelluric (RMT), and, in particular, controlled-source audiomagnetotelluric (CSAMT) data are often heavily distorted by near-surface inhomogeneities. We developed a novel scheme to invert MT, RMT, and CSAMT data in the form of scalar or tensorial impedances and vertical magnetic transfer functions simultaneously for layer resistivities and electric and magnetic galvanic distortion parameters. The inversion scheme uses smoothness constraints to regularize layer resistivities and either Marquardt-Levenberg damping or the minimum-solution length criterion to regularize distortion parameters. A depth of investigation range is estimated by comparing layered model sections derived from first- and second-order smoothness constraints. Synthetic examples demonstrate that earth models are reconstructed properly for distorted and undistorted tensorial CSAMT data. In the inversion of scalar CSAMT data, such as the determinant impedance or individual tensor elements, the reduced number of transfer functions inevitably leads to increased ambiguity for distortion parameters. As a consequence of this ambiguity for scalar data, distortion parameters often grow over the iterations to unrealistic absolute values when regularized with the Marquardt-Levenberg scheme. Essentially, compensating relationships between terms containing electric and/or magnetic distortion are used in this growth. In a regularization with the minimum solution length criterion, the distortion parameters converge into a stable configuration after several iterations and attain reasonable values. The inversion algorithm was applied to a CSAMT field data set collected along a profile over a tunnel construction site at Hallandsåsen, Sweden. To avoid erroneous inverse models from strong anthropogenic effects on the data, two scalar transfer functions (one scalar impedance and one scalar vertical magnetic transfer function) were selected for inversion. Compared with a regularization of distortion parameters with the Marquardt-Levenberg method, the minimum-solution length criterion yielded smaller absolute values of distortion parameters and a horizontally more homogeneous distribution of electrical conductivity.

DualBeam instruments that combine the imaging capability of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with the cutting and deposition capability of a focused ion beam (FIB) provide biologists with a powerful tool for investigating three-dimensional structure with nanoscale (1 nm-100 nm) resolution. Ever since Van Leeuwenhoek used the first microscope to describe bacteria more than 300 years ago, microscopy has played a central role in scientists' efforts to understand biological systems. Light microscopy is generally limited to a useful resolution of about a micrometer. More recently the use of confocal and electron microscopy has enabled investigations at higher resolution. Used with fluorescent markers, confocal microscopy can detect and localize molecular scale features, but its imaging resolution is still limited. SEM is capable of nanometer resolution, but is limited to the near surface region of the sample.

Abstract Discussion of a Performance - Based Engineering evaluation procedure for an existing interstate highway bridge in north Mississippi. The bridge is in a highly trafficked location near the Memphis Metropolitan area and is reflective of modern design practices in Mississippi. Results are presented of nonlinear damage response and displacement ductility performance of the reinforced concrete bents and their foundations predicted using static finite element (FE) computations. The model considers the composite action of the concrete and the reinforcing steel materials under axial force, shear, torsion and flexure. The performance-based evaluation includes three-dimensional computational simulations of the nonlinear bridge system, including substructures and superstructure. The response spectrum dynamic analysis method will also be carried out on the linear elastic three-dimensional model to predict the linear elastic behavior. Field vibration measurements, including ambient and hammer-impact, were performed to calibrate the models. The computed transfer functions are currently being evaluated to correlate vibration measurements and the Finite element models.

AbstractQuantitative understanding of the processes that couple the lower atmosphere to the upper surface of ice sheets is necessary for interpreting ice-core records. Of special interest are those processes that involve the exchange of energy or atmospheric constituents. One such process, wind pumping, entails both possibilities and provides a possible mechanism for converting atmospheric kinetic energy into a near-surface heat source within the firn layer. The essential idea is that temporal and spatial variations in surface air pressure, resulting from air motion, can diffuse into permeable firn by conventional Darcy flow. Viscous friction between moving air and the solid firn matrix leads to energy dissipation in the firn that is equivalent to a volumetric heat source.Initial theoretical work on wind pumping was aimed at explaining anomalous near-surface temperatures measured at sites on Agassiz Ice Cap, Arctic Canada. A conclusion of this preliminary work was that, under highly favourable conditions, anomalous warming of as much as 2°C was possible. Subsequent efforts to confirm wind-pumping predictions suggest that our initial estimates of the penetration depth for pressure fluctuations were optimistic. These observations point to a deficiency of the initial theoretical formulation — the surface-pressure forcing was assumed to vary temporally, but not spatially. Thus, within the firn there was only a surface-normal component of air flow. The purpose of the present contribution is to advance a three-dimensional theory of wind pumping in which air flow is driven by both spatial and temporal fluctuations in surface pressure. Conclusions of the three-dimensional analysis are that the penetration of pressure fluctuations, and hence the thickness of the zone of frictional interaction between air and permeable firn, is related to both the frequency of the pressure fluctuations and to the spatial coherence length of turbulence cells near the firn surface.

In the region of Siesławice (near Busko-Zdrój, Poland) there are unique phenomena of gypsum karst. Atmospheric factors caused numerous gypsum outcrops, canals and underground voids. The article presents the possibility of using non-invasive gravimetric surveys supplemented with geodetic measurements to illustrate karst changes occurring around the void. The use of modern geodetic measurement techniques including terrestrial and airborne laser scanning enables to generate a digital terrain model and a three-dimensional model of voids. Gravimetric field studies allowed to map the anomalies of the gravitational field of the near-surface zone. Geodetic measurement results have made it possible to accurately determine the terrain correction that supplemented the gravimetric anomaly information. Geophysical interpretation indicate the presence of weathered rocks in the near surface zone and fractures and loosened zones located surround the karst cave.
