Degumming of pre-chlorite treated jute fiber was studied in this paper. The effects of sodium hydroxide concentration, treatment time, temperature, sodium silicate concentration, fiber-to-liquor ratio, penetrating agent TF-107B concentration, and degumming agent TF-125A concentration were the process conditions examined. With respect to gum decomposition, fineness and mechanical properties, sodium hydroxide concentration, sodium silicate concentration, and treatment time were found to be the most important parameters. An orthogonal L9(34) experiment designed to optimize the conditions for degumming resulted in the selection of the following procedure: sodium hydroxide of 12g/L, sodium silicate of 3g/L, TF-107B of 2g/L, TF-125A of 2g/L, treatment time of 105 min, temperature of 100°C and fiber to liquor ratio of 1:20. The effect of the above degumming process on the removal of impurities was also examined and the results showed that degumming was an effective method for removing impurities, especially hemicellulose.

Kerstin Thomas revaluates the famous dispute between Martin Heidegger, Meyer Schapiro, and Jacques Derrida, concerning a painting of shoes by Vincent Van Gogh. The starting point for this dispute was the description and analysis of things and artworks developed in his essay, “The Origin of the Work of Art”. In discussing Heidegger’s account, the art historian Meyer Schapiro’s main point of critique concerned Heidegger’s claim that the artwork reveals the truth of equipment in depicting shoes of a peasant woman and thereby showing her world. Schapiro sees a striking paradox in Heidegger’s claim for truth, based on a specific object in a specific artwork while at the same time following a rather metaphysical idea of the artwork. Kerstin Thomas proposes an interpretation, which exceeds the common confrontation of philosophy versus art history by focussing on the respective notion of facticity at stake in the theoretical accounts of both thinkers. Schapiro accuses Heidegger of a lack of concreteness, which he sees as the basis for every truth claim on objects. Thomas understands Schapiro’s objections as motivated by this demand for a facticity, which not only includes the work of art, but also investigator in his concrete historical perspective. Truth claims under such conditions of facticity are always relative to historical knowledge, and open to critical intervention and therefore necessarily contingent. Following Thomas, Schapiro’s critique shows that despite his intention of giving the work of art back its autonomy, Heidegger could be accused of achieving quite the opposite: through the abstraction of the concrete, the factual, and the given to the type, he actually sets the self and the realm of knowledge of the creator as absolute and not the object of his knowledge. Instead, she argues for a revaluation of Schapiro’s position with recognition of the arbitrariness of the artwork, by introducing the notion of factuality as formulated by Quentin Meillassoux. Understood as exchange between artist and object in its concrete material quality as well as with the beholder, the truth of painting could only be shown as radically contingent. Thomas argues that the critical intervention of Derrida who discusses both positions anew is exactly motivated by a recognition of the contingent character of object, artwork and interpretation. His deconstructive analysis can be understood as recognition of the dynamic character of things and hence this could be shown with Meillassoux to be exactly its character of facticity – or factuality.

Background and Objective: Jute fiber is highly sensitive to the action of light. Significant features of the photochemical changes lose its tensile strength and develop a yellow color. It has been proved that the phenolic structure of lignin is responsible for the yellowing of jute fiber. In order to remove lignin, jute yarns were treated with laccase enzyme in different treatment times and ultrasonic powers. Lower whiteness index and higher yellowness index values were obtained by the laccase-ultrasound system in contrast to conventional laccase treatment. Methods: The laccase enzyme which entered the fibers by applying ultrasound, decreased the tensile strength while the loss in tensile strength was lower at high ultrasound intensities. FT-IR spectrum showed that the band at 1634 cm-1 assigned to lignin completely disappeared after laccase treatment in the presence of ultrasound. The absence of this peak in the laccase-ultrasound treated jute yarn suggests complete removal of lignin. Change in the morphology of fibers was observed by SEM before and after enzymatic delignification. The laccase-ultrasound treated yarns showed a rougher surface and more porosity. On the other hand, it was more effective in fibrillation of the jute fibers than the conventional method. Finally, bio-treated jute yarns were dyed with basic and reactive dyes. Results: The results indicated that at low intensities of ultrasound and relatively long reaction times, lignin can be more effectively removed and dye strength (K/S) increased to a higher extent. Laccase-ultrasound treatment increased the color strength by 33.65% and 23.40% for reactive and basic dyes respectively. Conclusion: In the case of light fastness, the conventional laccase treated yarns provided better protection than laccase-ultrasound treated yarns.

The is chapter argues that to understand the distributed nature of musical creativity we need to examine its connection to large-scale social structure and to capitalist relations of labour. These relations have a ‘downward’ causal impact on creative acts. Firstly, this is through the division of labour, which plays out in different ways across genres from classical to pop. Secondly, creative musical labour involves engagement with the concrete, material world. The distributed nature of creativity is determined not only by the drive to divide or consolidate music-making tasks but also depends on the nature of the musical materials to hand, and methods of dealing with them. Two methods are described in this chapter: translation and intensification. Each (sometimes they are combined) entails the making of relatively autonomous creative choices which are emergent from the structural and material conditions of musical labour.

Based on the superiority avoiding the matrix equation to be morbid for those fitting functions constructed by orthogonal base, the Legendre orthogonal polynomial is adopted to fit the experimental data of concrete uniaxial compression stress-strain curves under the frame of least-square. With the help of FORTRAN programming, 3 series of experimental data is fitted. And the fitting effect is very satisfactory when the item number of orthogonal base is not less than 5. What’s more, compared with those piecewise fitting functions, the Legendre orthogonal polynomial fitting function obtained can be introduced into the nonlinear harden-soften character of concrete constitute law more convenient because of its uniform function form and continuous derived feature. And the fitting idea by orthogonal base function will provide a widely road for studying the constitute law of concrete material.

Jute is the golden fiber of Bangladesh, but its production is declining due to the involvement of higher production and processing costs, where a major portion of the cost is needed for fiber extraction. Labor unavailability and increasing labor cost have led to higher jute fiber production cost. To address these issues, this study looks at the development of a power-operated and cost-effective fiber extraction machine aiming at reducing the production cost. The study was conducted at the Rangpur regional office premises of Practical Action in Bangladesh, and the developed machine was branded as “Aashkol”, which had the following major parts: a feeding tray, a primary extraction roller, a secondary extraction roller, grabbing rollers, fiber collection stand, base frame, protection cover, and a spring-loaded tray under the primary extraction roller. The Aashkol can extract green ribbon from the jute stem, but jute sticks were broken down into smaller pieces (3–6 cm). The performance evaluation of the machine was conducted using different types of jute (Deshi, Kenaf, and Tossa) and compared with another jute extraction machine (KP model, introduced by Karupannya Rangpur Ltd.). The Aashkol-based extraction and improved retting systems were also evaluated and compared with traditional jute extraction systems. The jute stem input capacity (4.99 t h−1) of the Aashkol was 47.6% higher than the KP model (3.38 t h−1). Compared with the traditional system, across jute types, the Aashkol produced a 9% higher fiber yield and saved 46% retting time. Overall, the Aashkol reduced 90% of the labor requirement and saved 11.6 USD t−1 in jute fiber extraction and retting than the traditional method.

Natural renewable materials can play a big role in reducing the consumption of synthetic materials for environmental sustainability. Natural fiber-reinforced composites have attracted significant research and commercial importance due to their versatile characteristics and multi-dimensional applications. As the natural materials are easily rotten, flammable, and moisture absorbent, they require additional chemical modification for use in sustainable product development. In the present research, jute fibers were treated with rot-, fire-, and water-retardant chemicals and their corresponding polymer composites were fabricated using a compression molding technique. To identify the effects of the chemical treatments on the jute fiber and their polymeric composites, a Fourier transformed infrared radiation (FTIR) study was conducted and the results were analyzed. The presence of various chemicals in the post-treated fibers and the associated composites were identified through the FTIR analysis. The varying weight percentage of the chemicals used for treating the fibers affected the physio-mechanical properties of the fiber as well as their composites. From the FTIR analysis, it was concluded that crystallinity increased with the chemical concentration of the treatment which could be contributed to the improvement in their mechanical performance. This study provides valuable information for both academia and industry on the effect of various chemical treatments of the jute fiber for improved product development.

nfluences on properties of the concrete highway pavement were analyzed in this paper, and the optimal formulation materials were gotten to use in the repair of used-broken cement blocks in the experiment. Polyurethane concrete material was prepared, combing the ordinary concrete technology with one-step method of the synthesis of polyurethane hard bubble, and then its mechanical properties of the relevant parameters were measured to determine the optimal preparation program. The results show that the polyurethane concrete also has sufficiently good mechanical properties while it has the characteristic of fast patching.
