A common acquisition scenario in microseismic monitoring is the deployment of large areal receiver arrays at or near the surface. This recording geometry has the advantage of providing coverage of the source’s focal hemisphere as well as characterization of the arrival time moveout curve; however, the accuracy of many location techniques applied to these data sets depends on the accuracy of the depth velocity model provided prior to location. We have developed a simple oriented time-domain location technique so that full knowledge of the velocity model is not required a priori. The applicability of the technique is limited to horizontally layered models and also to models with dipping interfaces of small angles; however, this restriction is acceptable in many unconventional reservoirs. Implementation of the technique includes three steps: (1) smoothing of the observed time arrivals by fitting a hyperbolic moveout curve with a broad set of constraints, (2) updating and restricting the constraints using a local-slopes-based location workflow, and (3) estimation of the focal coordinates of passive sources using the updated constraints for the final least-squares fitting of the moveout curves. We have tested the performance of the proposed technique on several 2D examples and a 3D field data set. The results from synthetic examples suggest that, despite the assumption of the method that the arrival moveout can be modeled using a constant effective velocity, a reliable event location is achieved for layered models without considerable lateral heterogeneities. Our tests on the field data set find that the focal point coincides with a previously derived estimate of the source location. To assess the uncertainty of the proposed technique, bootstrap statistics was also used and applied to the field data set.

In downhole microseismic monitoring, the velocity model plays a vital role in accurate mapping of the hydraulic fracturing image. For velocity model uncertainties in the number of layers or interface depths, the conventional velocity calibration method has been shown to effectively locate the perforation shots; however, it introduces non-negligible location errors for microseismic events, especially for complex geological formations with inclinations. To improve the event location accuracy, we exploit the advantages of the reversible jump Markov chain Monte Carlo (rjMCMC) approach in generating different dimensions of velocity models and propose a transdimensional Bayesian simultaneous inversion framework for obtaining the effective velocity structure and event locations simultaneously. The transdimensional inversion changes the number of layers during the inversion process and selects the optimal interface depths and velocity values to improve the event location accuracy. The confidence intervals of the simultaneous inversion event locations estimated by Bayesian inference enable us to evaluate the location uncertainties in the horizontal and vertical directions. Two synthetic examples and a field test are presented to illustrate the performance of our methodology, and the event location accuracy is shown to be higher than that obtained using the conventional methods. With less dependence on prior information, the proposed transdimensional simultaneous inversion method can be used to obtain an effective velocity structure for facilitating highly accurate hydraulic fracturing mapping.

A precise velocity model is necessary to obtain reliable locations of microseismic events, which provide information about the effectiveness of the hydraulic stimulation. Seismic anisotropy plays an important role in microseismic event location by imposing the dependency between wave velocities and its propagation direction. Building an anisotropic velocity model that accounts for that effect allows for more accurate location of microseismic events. We have used downhole microseismic records from a pilot hydraulic fracturing experiment in Lower-Paleozoic shale gas play in the Baltic Basin, Northern Poland, to obtain accurate microseismic events locations. We have developed a workflow for a vertical transverse isotropy velocity model construction when facing a challenging absence of horizontally polarized S-waves in perforation shot data, which carry information about Thomsen’s [Formula: see text] parameter and provide valuable constraints for locating microseismic events. We extract effective [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text] for each layer from the P- and SV-wave arrivals of perforation shots, whereas the unresolved [Formula: see text] is retrieved afterward from the SH-SV-wave delay time of selected microseismic events. An inverted velocity model provides more reliable location of microseismic events, which then becomes an essential input for evaluating the hydraulic stimulation job effectiveness in the geomechanical context. We evaluate the influence of the preexisting fracture sets and obliquity between the borehole trajectory and principal horizontal stress direction on the hydraulic treatment performance. The fracturing fluid migrates to previously fractured zones, while the growth of the microseismic volume in consecutive stages is caused by increased penetration of the above-lying lithologic formations.

Prestack depth migration still suffers from the problems associated with building appropriate velocity models. The two main after‐migration, before‐stack velocity analysis techniques currently used, depth focusing and residual moveout correction, have found good use in many applications but have also shown their limitations in the case of very complex structures. To address this issue, we have extended the residual moveout analysis technique to the general case of heterogeneous velocity fields and steep dips, while keeping the algorithm robust enough to be of practical use on real data. Our method is not based on analytic expressions for the moveouts and requires no a priori knowledge of the model, but instead uses geometrical ray tracing in heterogeneous media, layer‐stripping migration, and local wavefront analysis to compute residual velocity corrections. These corrections are back projected into the velocity model along raypaths in a way that is similar to tomographic reconstruction. While this approach is more general than existing migration velocity analysis implementations, it is also much more computer intensive and is best used locally around a particularly complex structure. We demonstrate the technique using synthetic data from a model with strong velocity gradients and then apply it to a marine data set to improve the positioning of a major fault.

In complex geology, the presence of highly dipping structures can complicate impedance inversion. We have developed a structurally constrained inversion in which a computationally well-behaved objective function is minimized subject to structural constraints. This approach allows the objective function to incorporate structural orientation in the form of dips into our inversion algorithm. Our method involves a multitrace impedance inversion and a rotation of an orthogonal system of derivative operators. Local dips used to constrain the derivative operators were estimated from migrated seismic data. In addition to imposing structural constraints on the inversion model, this algorithm allows for the inclusion of a priori knowledge from boreholes. We investigated this algorithm on a complex synthetic 2D model as well as a seismic field data set. We compared the result obtained with this approach with the results from single trace-based inversion and laterally constrained inversion. The inversion carried out using dip information produces a model that has higher resolution that is more geologically realistic compared with other methods.

SUMMARY Quantitative estimation of pore fractions filled with liquid water, ice and air is crucial for a process-based understanding of permafrost and its hazard potential upon climate-induced degradation. Geophysical methods offer opportunities to image distributions of permafrost constituents in a non-invasive manner. We present a method to jointly estimate the volumetric fractions of liquid water, ice, air and the rock matrix from seismic refraction and electrical resistivity data. Existing approaches rely on conventional inversions of both data sets and a suitable a priori estimate of the porosity distribution to transform velocity and resistivity models into estimates for the four-phase system, often leading to non-physical results. Based on two synthetic experiments and a field data set from an Alpine permafrost site (Schilthorn, Bernese Alps and Switzerland), it is demonstrated that the developed petrophysical joint inversion provides physically plausible solutions, even in the absence of prior porosity estimates. An assessment of the model covariance matrix for the coupled inverse problem reveals remaining petrophysical ambiguities, in particular between ice and rock matrix. Incorporation of petrophysical a priori information is demonstrated by penalizing ice occurrence within the first two meters of the subsurface where the measured borehole temperatures are positive. Joint inversion of the field data set reveals a shallow air-rich layer with high porosity on top of a lower-porosity subsurface with laterally varying ice and liquid water contents. Non-physical values (e.g. negative saturations) do not occur and estimated ice saturations of 0–50 per cent as well as liquid water saturations of 15–75 per cent are in agreement with the relatively warm borehole temperatures between −0.5  and 3 ° C. The presented method helps to improve quantification of water, ice and air from geophysical observations.

We have developed and implemented a robust and practical scheme for anisotropic 3D acoustic full-waveform inversion (FWI). We demonstrate this scheme on a field data set, applying it to a 4C ocean-bottom survey over the Tommeliten Alpha field in the North Sea. This shallow-water data set provides good azimuthal coverage to offsets of 7 km, with reduced coverage to a maximum offset of about 11 km. The reservoir lies at the crest of a high-velocity antiformal chalk section, overlain by about 3000 m of clastics within which a low-velocity gas cloud produces a seismic obscured area. We inverted only the hydrophone data, and we retained free-surface multiples and ghosts within the field data. We invert in six narrow frequency bands, in the range 3 to 6.5 Hz. At each iteration, we selected only a subset of sources, using a different subset at each iteration; this strategy is more efficient than inverting all the data every iteration. Our starting velocity model was obtained using standard PSDM model building including anisotropic reflection tomography, and contained epsilon values as high as 20%. The final FWI velocity model shows a network of shallow high-velocity channels that match similar features in the reflection data. Deeper in the section, the FWI velocity model reveals a sharper and more-intense low-velocity region associated with the gas cloud in which low-velocity fingers match the location of gas-filled faults visible in the reflection data. The resulting velocity model provides a better match to well logs, and better flattens common-image gathers, than does the starting model. Reverse-time migration, using the FWI velocity model, provides significant uplift to the migrated image, simplifying the planform of the reservoir section at depth. The workflows, inversion strategy, and algorithms that we have used have broad application to invert a wide-range of analogous data sets.

Conventionally, interval velocities are derived from picked stacking velocities. The velocity‐analysis algorithm proposed in this paper is also based on stacking velocities; however, it eliminates the conventional picking stage by always considering stacking velocities from the point of view of an interval‐velocity model. This view leads to a model‐based, automatic velocity‐analysis algorithm. The algorithm seeks to find an interval‐velocity model such that the stacking velocities calculated from that model give the most powerful stack. An additional penalty is incurred for models that differ in smoothness from an initial interval‐velocity model. The search for the best model is conducted by means of a conjugate‐gradient method. The connection between the interval‐velocity model and the stacking velocities plays an important role in the algorithm proposed in this paper. In the simplest case, stacking velocity is assumed to be equal to rms velocity. For the more general case, a linear theory is developed, connecting interval velocity and stacking velocity through the intermediary of traveltime. When applied to a field data set, the method produces an interval‐velocity model that explains the lateral variation in both stacking velocity and traveltime.
