Construction practice in San Salvador, as in the rest of El Salvador, had remained practically unchanged since the time of Spanish colonization up to around 1942. From then on, building practices from many other countries have been introduced, and they have exerted a major influence. The last four decades can be divided into five stages or periods induced by events such as earthquakes in El Salvador and neighboring countries, as well as the incorporation of foreign codes in lieu of a local one and the introduction of new techniques, such as soil mechanics and microseismic investigation. The incorporation of practices based on foreign codes contributed significantly to the improvement of construction practice but occasionally led to misinterpretations, e.g. in the evaluation of seismic actions. At present, a number of studies and records are available that can be used as a basis for the elaboration of an earthquake resistant design code.

In the long history of mankind's existence, nature's forces have influenced human existence to a great extent. Of all natural disasters, the least understood and most destructive are earthquakes. Their claim of human lives and material losses constantly force people to search for better protection, still a great challenge for engineers and researchers worldwide. Although important progress has been done in understanding seismic activity and developing buildings technology, a better way of protecting buildings on large scale is still in search. The essential features of earthquake resistance structure are stable foundation design, regularity, ductility, adequate stiffness, redundancy, and ruggedness. The chapter focuses on increasing the knowledge dictum of earthquake resistant design and discusses the various sorts of issues and challenges. It also presents a wide view on optimization techniques that are required to be done in the latest technology currently in practice so as to achieve the optimum design techniques.

The Brian Friel Papers at the NLI reveal a long and relatively unexplored history of major and minor influences on Friel's plays. As the archive attests, these influences manifest themselves in ways that range from the superficial to the deeply structural. In this article, I draw on original archival research into the composition process of Friel's genre-defining play Faith Healer (1979) to bring to light a model of influence that operates at the level of artistic practice. Specifically, I examine the extent to which Friel's officially unacknowledged encounter with a book of interviews with painter Francis Bacon influenced the play in terms of character, language, and form. I suggest that Bacon's creative process – incorporating his ideas on the role of the artist, the workings of chance, and the extent to which art does violence to fact – may have had a major influence on both the play's development and on Friel's development as an artist.

In earthquake-resistant design of structures, for certain structural configurations and conditions, it is necessary to use accelerograms for dynamic analysis. Accelerograms are also needed to simulate the effects of earthquakes on a building structure in the laboratory. A new method of generating artificial earthquake accelerograms is presented through adroit integration of neural networks and wavelets. A counterpropagation (CPN) neural network model is developed for generating artificial accelerograms from any given design spectrum such as the International Building Code (IBC) design spectrum. Using the IBC design spectrum as network input means an accelerogram may be generated for any geographic location regardless of whether earthquake records exist for that particular location or not. In order to improve the efficiency of the model, the CPN network is modified with the addition of the wavelet transform as a data compression tool to create a new CPN-wavelet network. The proposed CPN-wavelet model is trained using 20 sets of accelerograms and tested with additional five sets of accelerograms available from the U.S. Geological Survey. Given the limited set of training data, the result is quite remarkable.

AbstractThe present study evaluates a combination prevention intervention for crack users in San Salvador, El Salvador that included social network HIV testing, community events and small group interventions. We examined the cumulative effects of the social network HIV testing and small group interventions on rates of HIV testing, beyond the increase that we saw with the introduction of the social network HIV testing intervention alone. HIV test data was converted into the number of daily tests and analyzed the immediate and overtime impact of small group interventions during and in the twelve weeks after the small group intervention. The addition of the small group interventions to the baseline of monthly HIV tests resulted in increased rates of testing lasting 7 days after the small group interventions suggesting a reinforcing effect of small group interventions on testing rates.

AbstractWe describe circumstances at the Hospital Rosales, located in San Salvador, El Salvador, and some salient observations from an infection control program begun in 1978. Findings include overuse of antibiotics, especially of penicillin and chloramphenicol; a predominance of gram-negative rod infections, especially Pseudomonas aeruginosa; a relative infrequency of Staphylococcus aureus infections; an apparent doubling of the mean duration of hospitalization for patients with nosocomial infections compared with other patients (22.1 days versus 11.0 days); documentation and partial correction of deficiencies in aseptic and antiseptic practices; an outbreak of Pseudomonas aeruginosa endophthalmitis traced to the hospital's factory for the manufacturing of intravenous fluids; and attitudinal problems such as the care of patients with rabies on open wards. Prevalence surveys conducted during 1981 and 1986 suggest a dramatic increase in the recent incidence of surgical wound infection (44% v 28%, P < 0.001). This latter observation suggests a direct relationship between infection rates and the hardships imposed by poverty and civil war.

In recent years, frequent earthquakes have caused great casualties and economic losses in China. And in the earthquake, damage of buildings and the collapse is the main reason causing casualties. Therefore, in the design of constructional engineering, a seismicity of architectural structure is the pressing task at issue. Through time history analysis method, this paper analyzes the time history of building structural response and then it predicts the peak response of mode by response spectrum analysis. Based on this, this paper constructs a numerical simulation model for the architecture by using finite element analysis software SATWE. At the same time, this paper also calculates the structure seismic so as to determine the design of each function structure in architectural engineering design and then provides reference for the realization of earthquake-resistant building.
