As China’s infrastructure grows rapidly, the use of concrete-filled steel tubular structures for engineering applications is attracting increasing interest owing to their high section modulus, high strength and good seismic performance. However, for concrete-filled steel tubular members with large width-to-thickness ratio, steel tubes are prone to outward buckling when they are subjected to axial compression. Welding of longitudinal stiffeners on the steel tubes is one of the most efficient approaches for delaying local buckling and thus improving the mechanical performance of such type of concrete-filled steel tubular members. This study attempts to investigate the axial compression behaviour of concrete-filled stiffened steel tubular members with square sections through experimental study and finite element analysis. First, 14 concrete-filled steel tubular stub columns, with different width-to-thickness ratios of steel tube and depth-to-thickness ratios of stiffener, were subjected to axial compression loads and tested. It was found that the use of stiffeners increases the ultimate strength and improves the stability of the stub columns. Later, an investigation on the behaviour of the stiffened concrete-filled steel tubular stub columns was carried out through a three-dimensional finite element analysis. The accuracy of the finite element analysis model was verified by the test results. A parametric study was conducted to further evaluate the stiffening schemes that influence the axial compression strength. Finally, the research findings were synthesized into a new simplified model to predict the load-carrying capacity of stiffened concrete-filled steel tubular stub columns that allows for large width-to-thickness ratios.

Discontinuity Region Design method was recently extended to allow assessment of serviceability limit states (SLS) for regions of concrete structural members where the Bernoulli-Navier hypothesis does not hold, such as dapped ends, openings, frame corners, etc. The method uses material models which consider the impact of short- and long-term loading effects (creep) as well as the influence of tension stiffening, which are calculated from reinforcement ratios. The method can be used to perform assessment of stress limitation SLS as well as to calculate crack widths. Crack width calculations for both stabilized and non-stabilized cracks have been compared with real-world experiments. Calculations regarding deflection and strain in concrete and concrete rebars are compared with analytical calculations.

This paper studied the composite action of concrete-filled circular aluminum alloy tubular (CFCAT) stub columns under axial compression. A fine-meshed finite three-dimensional (3D) solid element model making use of a tri-axial plastic-damage constitutive model of concrete and elastoplastic constitutive model of aluminum alloy was established. A parametric study utilizing the verified finite element (FE) model was carried out and the analytical results were exploited to investigate the composite actions of concrete-filled circular aluminum alloy tubular stub columns subjected axial compression. Compared with the concrete-filled steel tube (CFCST) stub columns, the aluminum alloy tube exerted a weaker constraint effect on the infilled concrete due to its lower elastic modulus. Based on the FE analytical results and regression method, the composite action model of concrete-filled circular aluminum alloy tubular stub columns was proposed. By generalizing the stress nephogram of the concrete-filled circular aluminum alloy tubular stub column at the limit state, a design formula was proposed to estimate the ultimate bearing capacity the columns using the superposition method. The predicted results of the proposed formula show a good agreement with both the experimental and FE analytical results. The comparison between the proposed formula and current design methods indicates that the proposed formula is more accurate and convenient to use.

The objective of this study was to investigate the composite behavior of rectangular concrete-filled cold-formed steel (CFS) tubular stub columns under axial compression. A fine finite 3D solid element model of rectangular concrete-filled cold-formed steel tubular stub column was established by ABAQUS, which utilized a constitutive model of cold-formed steel considering the cold-forming effect and a triaxial plastic-damage constitutive model of the infilled concrete. Good agreement was achieved and the average discrepancy between the experimental and FE results was less than 5%. Based on the verified models, a further parametric analysis was carried out to reveal the influence of various factors on the strength and behavior of the concrete-filled rectangular cold-formed steel tubular stub columns. The factors included constitutive models adopted for cold-formed steel, length over width ratio of the rectangular section, wall-thickness and width, and concrete strength and yield strength of the cold-formed steel. A total of 144 FE models were analyzed. The stress nephogram was reasonably simplified in accordance with the limit state and a theoretical formula considering confinement coefficient was proposed to estimate the ultimate bearing capacity of concrete-filled rectangular cold-formed steel tubular stub columns using the superposition method. The calculated results showed satisfactory agreement with both the experimental and FE results, which proved the validity and accuracy of the formula proposed in this paper. In the proposed formula, the confinement coefficient of square concrete-filled cold-formed steel tubular stub columns is larger than that of hot-rolled steel counterparts but smaller than that of the stainless steel counterparts.

Ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) is a special concrete mixture with outstanding mechanical and durability characteristics. It is a mixture of portland cement, supplementary cementitious materials, sand, and high-strength, high-aspect-ratio microfibers. In this paper, the authors propose flexural design guidelines for precast, prestressed concrete members made with concrete mixtures developed by precasters to meet minimum specific characteristics qualifying it to be called PCI-UHPC. Minimum specified cylinder strength is 10 ksi (69 MPa) at prestress release and 18 ksi (124 MPa) at the time the member is placed in service, typically 28 days. Minimum flexural cracking and tensile strengths of 1.5 and 2 ksi (10 and 14 MPa), respectively, according to ASTM C1609 testing specifications are required. In addition, strain-hardening and ductility requirements are specified. Tensile properties are shown to be more important for structural optimization than cylinder strength. Both building and bridge products are considered because the paper is focused on capacity rather than demand. Both service limit state and strength limit state are covered. When the contribution of fibers to capacity should be included and when they may be ignored is shown. It is further shown that the traditional equivalent rectangular stress block in compression can still be used to produce satisfactory results in prestressed concrete members. A spreadsheet workbook is offered online as a design tool. It is valid for multilayers of concrete of different strengths, rows of reinforcing bars of different grades, and prestressing strands. It produces moment-curvature diagrams and flexural capacity at ultimate strain. A fully worked-out example of a 250 ft (76.2 m) span decked I-beam of optimized shape is given.

The work considers rods with a constant cross-section. The deformation law of each layer of the rod is adopted as an approximation by a polynomial of the second order. The method of determining the coefficients of the indicated polynomial and the limit deformations under compression and tension of the material of each layer is described with the presence of three traditional characteristics: modulus of elasticity, limit stresses at compression and tension. On the basis of deformation diagrams of the concrete grades B10, B30, B50 under tension and compression, these coefficients are determined by the method of least squares. The deformation diagrams of these concrete grades are compared on the basis of the approximations obtained by the limit values and the method of least squares, and it is found that these diagrams approximate quite well the real deformation diagrams at deformations close to the limit. The main problem in this work is to determine if the rod is able withstand the applied loads, before intensive cracking processes in concrete. So as a criterion of the conditional limit state this work adopts the maximum permissible deformation value under tension or compression corresponding to the points of transition to a falling branch on the deformation diagram level in one or more layers of the rod. The Kirchhoff-Lyav classical kinematic hypotheses are assumed to be valid for the rod deformation. The cases of statically determinable and statically indeterminable problems of bend of the rod are considered. It is shown that in the case of statically determinable loadings, the general solution of the problem comes to solving a system of three nonlinear algebraic equations which roots can be obtained with the necessary accuracy using the well-developed methods of computational mathematics. The general solution of the problem for statically indeterminable problems is reduced to obtaining a solution to a system of three nonlinear differential equations for three functions - deformation and curvatures. The Bubnov-Galerkin method is used to approximate the solution of this equation on the segment along the length of the rod, and specific examples of its application to the Maple system of symbolic calculations are considered.
