In strongly coupled supersymmetric SO (Nc) gauge theories with Nf-quarks for Nc-2≤Nf(≤3(Nc-2)/2), their low-energy physics can be described by Nambu–Goldstone superfields associated with dynamical flavor symmetry breaking, which should be compared with the absence of flavor symmetry breaking in the conventional description in terms of magnetic degrees of freedom. The presence of the flavor symmetry breaking is confirmed by the well-known instanton effects in SO (Nc) with Nf=Nc-2, which are also described by our proposed effective superpotential. For Nf≥Nc-1, our effective superpotentials utilize baryonic configurations as well as mesons composed of two quarks. The baryonic configurations are supplied by "diquarks" made of Nc-1 quarks for Nf=Nc-1 and by baryons composed of Nc quarks for Nc≥Nf. It is argued that our effective superpotentials exhibit the holomorphic decoupling property, the anomaly-matching property and correct description of instanton effects in SO (Nc) when Nf-Nc+2 quarks become massive if Nf≥Nc-1.

Abstract In previous work, [arXiv:1905.01909], we have calculated the mϱ/fπ ratio in the chiral and continuum limit for SU(3) gauge theory coupled to Nf = 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 fermions in the fundamental representation. The main result was that this ratio displays no statistically significant Nf-dependence. In the present work we continue the study of the Nf-dependence by extending the simulations to Nf = 7, 8, 9, 10. Along the way we also study in detail the Nf-dependence of finite volume effects on low energy observables and a particular translational symmetry breaking unphysical, lattice artefact phase specific to staggered fermions.

Abstract In Part I of this series of papers, we described a general method for determining the flavor symmetry of any 5d SCFT which can be constructed by integrating out BPS particles from some 6d SCFT compactified on a circle. In this part, we apply the method to explicitly determine the flavor symmetry of those 5d SCFTs which reduce, upon a mass deformation, to some 5d$$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = 1 gauge theory carrying a simple gauge algebra. In these cases, the flavor symmetry of the 5d gauge theory is often enhanced at the conformal point. We use our method to determine this enhancement.

Abstract We explore 6d (1, 0) superconformal field theories with SU(3) and SU(2) gauge symmetries which cascade after Higgsing to the E-string theory on a single M5 near an E8 wall. Specifically, we study the 2d $$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = (0, 4) gauge theories which describe self-dual strings of these 6d theories. The self-dual strings can be also viewed as instanton string solitons of 6d Yang-Mills theories. We find the 2d anomaly-free gauge theories for self-dual strings, amending the naive ADHM gauge theories which are anomalous, and calculate their elliptic genera. While these 2d theories respect the flavor symmetry of each 6d SCFT only partially, their elliptic genera manifest the symmetry fully as these functions as BPS index are invariant in strongly coupled IR limit. Our consistent 2d (0, 4) gauge theories also provide new insights on the non-linear sigma models for the instanton strings, providing novel UV completions of the small instanton singularities. Finally, we construct new 2d quiver gauge theories for the self-dual strings in 6d E-string theory for multiple M5-branes probing the E8 wall, and find their fully refined elliptic genera.

We discuss the gauge theory approach to consideration of the Nambu–Goldstone bosons as gauge and vector fields represented by the Cartan forms of spontaneously broken symmetries. The approach is generalized to describe the fundamental branes in terms of [Formula: see text]-dimensional worldvolume gauge and massless tensor fields consisting of the Nambu–Goldstone bosons associated with the spontaneously broken Poincaré symmetry of the [Formula: see text]-dimensional Minkowski space.
