Abstract We point out the necessity of resolving the apparent gauge dependence in the quantum corrections of cosmological observables for Higgs-like inflation models. We highlight the fact that this gauge dependence is due to the use of an asymmetric background current which is specific to a choice of coordinate system in the scalar manifold. Favoring simplicity over complexity, we further propose a practical shortcut to gauge-independent inflationary observables by using effective potential obtained from a polar-like background current choice. We demonstrate this shortcut for several explicit examples and present a gauge-independent prediction of inflationary observables in the Abelian Higgs model. Furthermore, with Nielsen’s gauge dependence identities, we show that for any theory to all orders, a gauge-invariant current term gives a gauge-independent effective potential and thus gauge-invariant inflationary observables.

The geometrization of the Electroweak Model is achieved in a five-dimensional Riemann–Cartan framework. Matter spinorial fields are extended to 5 dimensions by the choice of a proper dependence on the extracoordinate and of a normalization factor. U (1) weak hypercharge gauge fields are obtained from a Kaluza–Klein scheme, while the tetradic projections of the extradimensional contortion fields are interpreted as SU (2) weak isospin gauge fields. SU (2) generators are derived by the identification of the weak isospin current to the extradimensional current term in the Lagrangian density of the local Lorentz group. The geometrized U (1) and SU (2) groups will provide the proper transformation laws for bosonic and spinorial fields. Spin connections will be found to be purely Riemannian.

Events in 2008 suggest that the Koizumi era is over and the Liberal Democratic Party will lose the lower house election that must be called before its current term expires in September 2009. The Democratic Party of Japan became the favorite to win the election and laid out the new domestic and foreign policy directions in which it will take Japan.

Significance The Algerian army is under mounting pressure to take a stand on whether President Abdelaziz Bouteflika should remain president after his current term expires at the end of April. Bouteflika himself has not yet announced his plans. The army is officially neutral, but as an institution it has a legacy of having the last word on key political issues. Impacts An intervention by Gaid Salah may stir up rivalries within the army command and between the army and intelligence services. A constitutional crisis may provoke street protests, which could turn violent. Bouteflika’s re-election would merely postpone the day of reckoning over the succession.

Significance The ADMM-Plus is primarily a confidence-building forum, but Esper will need to navigate various issues that will affect US security relations in South-east Asia for the remainder of President Donald Trump’s current term. Impacts The forthcoming US election could further diminish Trump’s attention towards multilateral meetings. US defence ties with Singapore and Vietnam will grow more easily than with Thailand and the Philippines. US counterterrorism cooperation with South-east Asian states will likely grow.

In Korea, defect disputes regarding apartment buildings are becoming social issues. In particular, the term of warranty liability, which is an important criterion for defect disputes, lacks sufficient groundings for its establishment, leading to increased number of conflicts about the timing of defect occurrence as well as responsibilities for the defects. In the present research, we compare the trend of defect occurrence between painting work and finish work in apartment buildings during the last ten years to determine the validity of the current term of warranty liability. As a result, defect occurrence in painting work occurs from the first year to the fifth year. This trend is different from the finish work as a whole and also from the work which has one or two years of the term of warranty liability. Therefore, we recommend establishing a separate criterion for the term of warranty liability of painting work, which is different from other types of finish work.

Pinellas County has completed the first two phases of a four-phase project intended to preserve the life of the Pinellas County Resource Recovery Facility (PCRRF) for years to come. This project, called the Capital Replacement Project (CRP), is designed to restore key portions of the County’s investment, and prepare the facility for a smooth transition to a new operating contract when the current term expires in 2007. By the end of 2004, with the scheduled completion of the CRP project, key plant systems and components are expected to be in robust condition and capable of many years of additional service.

Subject The US political influence of the religious right. Significance By determining which party holds a majority in the House of Representatives and the Senate, November's midterm elections will influence the final two years of President Donald Trump’s current term. Given the historically relatively low voter turnouts in off-presidential-election-cycle election years, Trump’s fortunes depend heavily on his ability to mobilise core conservative voters on behalf of the Republican Party. The religious right is currently Trump’s most intensely loyal constituency and his best hope for retaining Republican majorities in Congress. Impacts Trump will nominate more social conservatives to federal judgeships. Recent gains in special elections do not prove a Democratic resurgence but imply turnout will be higher in November than normal. A Democratic gain of one or both houses of Congress would dent the religious right’s national influence. If the Republicans retain Congress, the religious right will increase its influence further at the federal level. So far, allegations against Trump over his private life do not appear likely to diminish his core support.

The ‘ Tigernach ’ Annals—the name is preferable to the current term ‘ Annals of Tigernach ’, which has grown out of a misunderstanding of an anonymous gloss—is one of the many varieties of a document which needs some such specific name as ‘ The Irish Annals ’ All the books of annals—‘ Ulster ’, ‘ Boyle ’, ‘ Inisfallen ’, ‘ Clonmacnois ’, ‘ Chronicum Scotorum ’, and the rest—are merely diversified forms of one fundamental text; this would be obvious if they were printed in parallel columns. The differences between them are due chiefly to interpolations, made not so much by compilers or scribes as by an endless succession of glossators.
