Respiration and Osmoregulation in Rainbow Trout with Gills Damaged by Zinc Sulphate

1. Damage to the gill epithelium occurs when hatched fish are killed rapidly by solutions of zinc sulphate. 2. The rate of routine oxygen uptake by lightly sedated, quiet, rainbow trout did not alter on exposure to a rapidly toxic solution of zinc sulphate. However, oxygen utilization decreased seven-fold, gill ventilation volume increased six-fold, heart rate was halved, coughing rate increased 18-fold and the Po2 of dorsal aortic blood declined. 3. Unsedated trout usually struggled on exposure to zinc. The survival time of struggling fish was reduced and oxygen uptake increased, but other physiological changes were similar to those in quiet fish. 4. The respiratory changes in poisoned trout were generally similar to changes observed earlier in the same fish under hypoxia. 5. The osmotic concentration and the concentrations of sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium and zinc in blood were largely unaffected by immobilization in zinc sulphate solution. Trout survived a four-fold increase in zinc concentration in the blood by injection. 6. The results suggest that epithelial damage decreased the permeability of the gills to oxygen, and did not increase their permeability to cations. Zinc was not a rapid internal poison. Death was probably caused by tissue hypoxia, when maximum gill ventilation was no longer sufficient to supply the oxygen needs of the fish.

Spermatozoa of rainbow trout and chum salmon, which have no potential for motility in the testis, acquire that potential in the sperm duct. This paper demonstrates that there is little difference between the levels of sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, chloride and osmolality of the seminal plasma in the testis and in the sperm duct. However, the bicarbonate concentration of the seminal plasma and the pH value of semen were higher in the sperm duct than in the testis. When immotile spermatozoa obtained from the testis were incubated in artificial seminal plasma with a high pH and containing HCO3-, spermatozoa became motile within 1 h. These results suggest that spermatozoa of salmonid fish acquire the potential for motility as a result of the increase in seminal bicarbonate concentration and pH that occurs as spermatozoa pass from the testis to the sperm duct.

Coffee brews, made by pouring water on coffee grounds or brewing in an espresso machine, are among the most popular beverages. The aim of this study was to summarize data on the content of macroelements (sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus) in coffee brews prepared with different methods, as well as to review the factors influencing the content of the elements. Studies from 2000 to 2020, published in the PubMed and Google Scholar databases, were reviewed. Taking into account the results presented by the authors, we calculated that one portion of coffee brew can cover 7.5% or 6.4% (for women and men) and 6.6% of the daily requirement for magnesium and potassium, respectively. Coffee provides slightly lower amounts of phosphorus (up to 2.2%), sodium (up to 2.2%), and calcium (up to 0.7% of the daily requirement for women and 0.6% for men). If coffee is drunk in the quantity of three to four cups, it can be an important source of magnesium, considering the risk of magnesium deficiency in modern societies.

1. The rate of oxygen uptake by single specimens of Branchiostoma lanceolatum has been shown to vary considerably. Some animals in sealed vessels at 50° C. were able to utilize the oxygen linearly down to less than 20% of air saturation. Others ceased to absorb oxygen at high saturations while yet others displayed two different rates in a sequence starting initially with a high rate. 2. There are three possible rates of oxygen utilization, as well as a zero rate, for an animal at any temperature between 10 and 19° C. Animals in gravel exhibit only two rates at lower temperatures. 3. The slowest rate varies exponentially with temperature but the two faster rates show a rapid increase between 10 and 15° C. with little change outside this temperature range. 4. The effect of size and temperature on the increased oxygen uptake during the faster rates of respiration are discussed. It is suggested that ciliary activity of the pharynx could be associated with the extra oxygen utilization. 5. It has been found that there are three inhalant stream velocities, a fast, a slow and a zero rate with no intermediate rates. 6. Study of the isolated portions of the pharyngeal wall confirm that the fast inhalant current is set by the activity of all the cilia to give a feeding stream. The slow stream is set up by the lateral cilia, which continue to beat when the frontal cilia and most of the lateral cilia have been inhibited by lowered oxygen concentrations. 7. The lateral cilia have been shown to be under nervous control and to be inhibited by pressure on the pharyngeal bars. This mechanism depends on the presence of a connexion between the pharyngeal bars and the endostyle.

The composition of breast milk from brazilian mothers delivering low birthweight infants and its adequacy as a source of nutrients for this group has not yet been fully elucidated. A total of 209 milk samples from 66 women were analysed. The mothers were divided into three groups: G1, mothers delivering term babies of low birthweight (TSGA, n=16); G2, mothers delivering preterm babies of appropriate birthweight (PTAGA, n=20); G3, mothers delivering term babies of appropriate birthweight (TAGA, n=30). The following factors were analysed: osmolarity, total proteins and protein fractions, creamatocrit, sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium. Milk samples were collected 48 h and 7, 15, 30 and 60 days after delivery. The groups did not differ significantly in terms of osmolarity, total proteins and fractions, creamatocrit, calcium, magnesium or potassium throughout the study period. Sodium levels were higher in all samples from mothers of TSGA infants and in samples from mothers of PTAGA infants on the 7th, 15th and 30th days than in milk from the TAGA group. The authors consider the needs of the low birthweight and TAGA infants and that these high sodium levels may be necessary for growth of low birthweight infants.

An experiment was conducted to determine if the hyperglycemia that is observed in zinc-stressed fish is also accompanied by changes in the levels of plasma insulin and liver glycogen. Juvenile rainbow trout were exposed to three concentrations of zinc sulphate along with a control group over 31 days. Plasma glucose levels were monitored in each group over the course of the experiment. The group demonstrating the most acute and sustained hyperglycemia (0.352 ppm zinc) was then analyzed along with the controls for changes in plasma insulin (using a teleost insulin radioimmunoassay) and liver glycogen levels. Significant depressions in plasma insulin and liver glycogen levels were observed in the zinc-exposed fish when compared with the controls. These changes are discussed with respect to possible influences of epinephrine, which is elevated in stressed fish, and (or) a direct effect of zinc metal on the pancreatic beta cells.

Background. Oxygen uptake efficiency slope (OUES) is a reproducible, objective marker of cardiopulmonary function. OUES is reported as being relatively independent of exercise intensity. Practical guidance and criteria for reporting OUES from submaximal tests has not been established.Objective. Evaluate the use of respiratory exchange ratio (RER) as a secondary criterion for reporting OUES.Design. 100 healthy volunteers (53 women) completed a ramped treadmill protocol to exhaustive exercise. OUES was calculated from data truncated to RER levels from 0.85 to 1.2 and compared to values generated from full test data. Results. Mean (sd) OUES from full test data and data truncated to RER 1.0 and RER 0.9 was 2814 (718), 2895 (730), and 2810 (789) mL/min per 10-fold increase in VE, respectively. Full test OUES was highly correlated with OUES from RER 1.0 (r=0.9) and moderately correlated with OUES from RER 0.9 (r=0.79).Conclusion. OUES values peaked in association with an RER level of 1.0. Sub-maximal OUES values are not independent of exercise intensity. There is a significant increase in OUES value as exercise moves from low to moderate intensity. RER can be used as a secondary criterion to define this transition.

Pigeons were made anosmic by unilateral treatment of their olfactory mucosa with a zinc sulphate solution and by plugging the contralateral nostril. In a series of releases at unfamiliar sites, 55­79 km from the home loft, the experimental birds' homing behaviour was compared with that of two control groups: unmanipulated control birds, and birds subjected to unilateral zinc sulphate treatment and equipped with an ipsilateral nasal plug. The experimental pigeons exhibited homing behaviour ­ in terms of both homeward initial orientation and homing performance ­ significantly poorer than that of both unmanipulated and treated control pigeons. In addition, the homing behaviour of the treated controls turned out to be only slightly, and not significantly, poorer than that of the unmanipulated birds. The results show that the impaired homing capabilities of the zinc-sulphate-treated birds are due to the lack of navigational information and not to non-specific brain damage caused by the experimental treatment.
