A Comparison of the Application of ‘Energy from Municipal Solid Waste’ Technology in Three Countries—the United Kingdom, Sweden and Canada

The United Kingdom, Sweden and Canada are participants in an International Energy Agency programme designed to co-ordinate R and D activity on energy from waste (EFW) technologies. The scope and content of the individual national R and D programmes are a direct result of the different institutional, economic and environmental factors that govern application of such technologies in each country. A description of these factors is given together with an assessment of their influence in shaping the existing and likely future role of landfill gas, refuse-derived fuel and mass incineration in each country.

ABSTRACTThis article, in which we examine developments in public expenditure on social policy in relation to total public spending in the United Kingdom (UK) in the period after the Second World War, is part of a larger international study on developments in social welfare spending on which we are currently engaged.In Section 1 we briefly sketch in the theoretical background to the study of public expenditure growth in general and social welfare spending in particular. We shall not in this article attempt to evaluate the validity of the competing hypotheses – this exercise is in hand as part of the international study, and we shall report the findings at a later date. Section 2 examines the growth of public expenditure in the UK at the aggregate level. In Section 3 we analyse public expenditure at the individual programme level and in Section 4 we summarize the conclusions.

These conditions are seen within the United Kingdom (UK) Armed Forces population at home and abroad and may endanger life, with significant implications for both the individual and the chain of command. Recognition and management from initial presentation to return to duty is discussed and guidance given on occupational considerations.

The paper proposes the presentation of the public participation item in the regulatory standards of CCS in Australia, Canada, the European Union, the United Kingdom and the United States and their possible relations with the Brazilian configuration. The choice of territories is due to the existence of the item in its legal norms and or regulations. The standards available from the International Energy Agency (IEA) database on Carbon Capture, Transport and Storage were used. The methodology used is the comparative, cumulatively with the deductive method, assuming that public participation is a fundamental issue for the governance of CCS activities and that Brazil, when inserting such activities into its code, should take into account the adoption of the best practices of public participation, which, in addition to being consultative, provides deliberative powers to citizens.

This is an analysis of the effects of economic factors on voting behavior in the United Kingdom. Aggregate- and individual-level data are used. When the results are compared to findings generated by the United States case, some intriguing differences appear. To mention just two examples, unemployment and inflation seem to be much more important in the United Kingdom than in the United States, and changes in real per capita income are positively related to election results in the United States and negatively related in the United Kingdom. More generally, while the aggregate results are strong and the individual-level results weak in the United States, in the United Kingdom the situation is practically reversed.

Abstract. We present a mass balance approach to estimate the seasonal and annual budgets of carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) of the United Kingdom (excluding Scotland) and the Republic of Ireland from concentration measurements taken on a ferry along the east coast of the United Kingdom over a 3-year period (2015–2017). We estimate the annual emissions of CH4 to be 2.55±0.48 Tg, which is consistent with the combined 2.29 Tg reported to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change by the individual countries. The net CO2 budget (i.e. including all anthropogenic and biogenic sources and sinks of CO2) is estimated at 881.0±125.8 Tg, with a net biogenic contribution of 458.7 Tg (taken as the difference between the estimated net emissions and the inventory value, which accounts for anthropogenic emissions only). The largest emissions for both gases were observed in a broad latitudinal band (52.5–54∘ N), which coincides with densely populated areas. The emissions of both gases were seasonal (maxima in winter and minima in summer), strongly correlated with natural gas usage and, to a lesser extent, also anti-correlated with mean air temperature. Methane emissions exhibited a statistically significant anti-correlation with air temperature at the seasonal timescale in the central region spanning 52.8–54.2∘ N, which hosts a relatively high density of waste treatment facilities. Methane emissions from landfills have been shown to sometimes increase with decreasing air temperature due to changes in the CH4-oxidising potential of the topsoil, and we speculate that the waste sector contributes significantly to the CH4 budget of this central region. This study brings independent verification of the emission budgets estimated using alternative products (e.g. mass balance budgets by aircraft measurements, inverse modelling, inventorying) and offers an opportunity to investigate the seasonality of these emissions, which is usually not possible.

The judgment of the European Court of Human Rights in Eweida and others v United Kingdom1 related to two pairs of cases.2 The first pair concerned a British Airways check-in clerk and a nurse, each of whom complained that dress codes at their respective places of work prevented them from openly wearing a small cross on a chain around their neck. In the second pair, a registrar of marriages and a relationship counsellor refused to offer their respective services to same-sex couples on the basis that homosexual acts were incompatible with their religious beliefs. Having failed to obtain relief in the domestic courts, all four applicants took their claims to Strasbourg, which heard oral argument last September. Judgment was pronounced on 15 January 2013. This Comment considers the broad thrust of the judgment, particularly the threefold manner by which the Court has clarified and embedded the right to freedom of religion, the practical outcome in the individual cases, and the likely effect of the judgment upon future litigation in the domestic courts of the United Kingdom.

The purpose of this paper is to present the study developed jointly by TRANSPETRO/Natural Gas Department and Det Norske Veritas in association with Jardine Asset & Risk Management Solutions (Jardine) from the United Kingdom. The study was carried out with the objective of evaluating the security of supply of the overall TRANSPETRO Southeast gas supply network in 2005, 2006 and 2007, that provide gas in the Southeast region of Brazil to thermo plants, to vehicles and to industrial and residential consumers. The occurrence of contract shortfalls imply in heavy fines for the suppliers. To provide best in class analysis, state of the art software was used in order to count on powerful tools to model the gas supply system and to quantify the availability and the efficiency of the overall network and of the individual components.
