The impact of social influences on food choices in college settings is of great importance because students are vulnerable to new forming identities at this time. The purpose of this pilot study is to determine the degree to which social influences impact food choices in a sample of college students. A 22-item survey instrument was created to determine the extent to which students have experienced being influenced by others when making food related purchasing decisions. A total of 257 out of a 323 students invited (80% response rate) in 11 sections of a personal health course responded to the survey. The overwhelming majority of respondents were reportedly comfortable ordering whatever they wanted when in the presence of their friends (n=249; 97%). Students were more likely to feel pressure to make a healthy choice than an unhealthy choice if everyone else was (45.1% vs. 31.5%), but fewer felt this way when asked specifically if their friends were ordering (28.4% vs. 21%). Social influences surrounding food choices are a topic that has gained momentum recently, however more research needs to be conducted to determine the reasons why social influences affect certain college students especially in comparing healthy versus unhealthy food choices.

College students may be particularly stressed as they struggle to balance college life, work, family, and relationships, while engaging in career exploration and attempting to find meaning and purpose in their lives. The current practitioner action research project explored incorporating mindfulness and contemplative practices into the higher education classroom to uncover students’ perceptions of how useful the activities might be for managing their personal stress and anxiety. Thirty-two freshman and sophomore students from a regional campus of a large university consented to participate in the semester-long study, where brief, weekly mindfulness activities were integrated into in-class and out-of-class assignments during an introductory Personal Health course. Study findings indicated that the majority of student participants found mindfulness practices were helpful when it came to decreasing stress and anxiety or relaxing. Making time outside the classroom to practice mindfulness behaviors, however, was a barrier. These findings have both practical and positive implications for future higher education classroom interventions. As such, the authors contend that college-level instructors should incorporate mindfulness and contemplative activities into the curricula of their health education courses to help college students master mindfulness strategies and encourage their use in reducing stress and anxiety.

Background: Suicide is one of the leading causes of death in the United States and is escalating in some populations, such as college students. Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death among college students (Caruso, 2018). The number one cause of suicide is depression (Caruso, 2018).Aim: The aim of the Promoting Understanding and Peer Success (PUPS) project is to explore innovative approaches to teaching and learning in a psychiatric mental health course and to provide early identification and intervention for students or staff who are identified as “at risk” for suicide, depression, anxiety, and substance abuse. Methods: Researchers are utilizing a qualitative approach when collecting data from nursing students involved in this study. The Nursing Students are asked to engage in focus group interview questions and to complete a self-reflection activity focused on the PUPS project. Results: Nursing students have conducted suicide, depression, anxiety and substance abuse screenings on approximately 500 campus student and staff participants thus far. Many of these screenings have resulted in distribution of educational resources, referral and follow up with counseling services. Conclusions: Researchers are continuing to collect data in the form of focused group interview questions, anecdotal comments, and end of the term course evaluations from the nursing students. Thematic coding is pending. Based upon anecdotal comments from the nursing students, the course faculty/researchers of this study believe the PUPS Project is successful.

In recent years, the phenomenon of college students’ indifference to life occurs frequently which seriously damages the healthy growth of college students. Life education should be integrated into mental health education courses in colleges. Experiential teaching is a type of teaching activity that is characterized by students’ personal experiences and initiative, focusing on the participation of practical activities. Compared with traditional lectures, it improves students’ interest and enthusiasm. In the mental health course, experiential teaching applies theoretical knowledge to real life and promote the improvement of students’ mental health to shape stable and mature personalities and eventually, promotes the development of life. College students’ mental health course should be integrated with experiential teaching practice in the perspective of life education, so as to better improve the teaching effect and guide students to form a correct outlook of life.

The aim of this study was to explore the students’ perception of the development of smart healthcare, especially the experience of using 3C products in the maintenance of personal health. This helps us understand the capacity health managers should be endowed with in the modern era of smart medicine. And, we unraveled the college students’ subjective feelings about using APP in health. Our results provide references for incorporating health maintenance platform resources into basic healthcare curriculums.

Background:This study examined the effect of using physical activity homework on physical activity levels of college students. Methods:Students in randomly assigned sections of a university health course were assigned 30 minutes of physical activity homework 3 days a week or no homework for 12 weeks. Participants completed self-reports of physical activity before the homework intervention and again at the conclusion of the 12 weeks of physical activity homework. Results:Participants in all course sections reported significant increases in the number of days per week of moderate and vigorous physical activity. Participants in homework sections additionally showed significant increases in the days they engaged in muscular strength/endurance training and activities to manage weight. Participants in sections without homework showed a significant increase in the number of days engaged in flexibility training. Comparison of gain scores showed statistically significant increases by the homework group in the days they participated in activities designed to manage weight. Conclusion:Physical activity homework was deemed to be an effective method of increasing college students’ levels of physical activity.
