Architects and architectural students are exploring new ways of design using Computer Aided Architectural Design software. This exploration is seldom backed up from a design methodological viewpoint. In this paper, a design methodological framework for reflection on innovate design processes by architects that has been used in an educational setting is introduced. The framework leads to highly specific, weak design methods, that clarify the use of the computer in the design process. The framework allows students to grasp new developments, use them in their own design work, and to better reflect on their own position relative to CAAD and architectural design.

In this study, a design methodology based on prototyping is proposed. This design methodology is intended to enhance the functionality of the test, differentiating it from the prototyping that is being conducted in conventional architectural design projects. The objective of this study is to explore reference cases that enable designers to maximize the utilization of both digital models and physical models that have been currently used in architectural designs. Also, it is to explore the complementary roles and effects of digital models and physical models. Smart Building Envelopes (SBEs) are one of challenging topics in architectural design and requires innovative design process included tests and risk management. A conceptual prototyping-based model considering the topic is applied to the design studio (education environment in university). Designing SBEs is not difficult to conceive ideas, but it is impossible to “implement” using the conventional design method. Implementing SBEs requires to strengthen validities and improve responsibilities of ideas in the stages of architectural designs, with cutting-edge technologies and smart materials. The design methodology enables designers (represented by students) to apply materials and manufacturing methods using digital models (parametric design, simulation, BIM) and physical models, rather than representing vanity images that are considered simple science fiction.

The current trend in architectural design pedagogy favors research and innovation that pushes the field into new territories by triggering exciting debates and encouraging new speculative design experimentation. This can be attributed to the enormous increase in the mobility and accessibility of information. Internet and mobility have overwhelmed our design studios with data from different cultures and technologies, thus providing limitless possibilities and opportunities to students and teachers alike. However, architectural practice on the ground is hardly capable of keeping up with the fast-paced nature of academic innovation today because the highly experimental and speculative approaches powering these designs do not often consider the reality of constraints posed by factors such as budget, program, construction feasibility, or building law. It therefore can be argued that there is a growing gap between academia and the profession in architecture today.This paper therefore aims to introduce and discuss the benefits of action-oriented design methodology as opportunity in bridging the gap between pedagogy and practice. Applied successfully to Design Impact Laboratory (DI-Lab) at the American University of Beirut, such models bring innovative conceptual design work to life through its context in academia. Established in 2016 with the purpose of allowing design innovation to inform community-based projects, DI-Lab has since involved over fifty students in the design and execution of highly innovative, socially conscious projects.

<p class="Abstract"><em>Study in thematic architectural design studios for undergraduate students requires the participants to be able to convey the image and the meaning behind it through architectural design. Skills on comprehensive design process and utilization of appropriate methods are determine the success on implementing architectural meanings through design theme. This research aims to find exploring ideas methods which are effective be </em><em>used to</em><em> for generate thematic concepts. The research uses qualitative strategies to examine the processes and products outcomes of studio participant’s study that are controlled through design theories which studied by them. It was concluded that analogic design method is an effective category to be used, both analogy by sources inside architecture field and outside. Both analogy of form, meaning, and image. In addition, the level of diversity and depth understanding of design methods also influence the success of architectural design by themes.</em></p>

Abstract The following article summarizes a research with the intention to demonstrate the challenges that architecture students need to face throughout their design tasks. The study is also meant to contribute to the cognition of state-of-the-art methods that can help students with these emerging problems. The main source of information was a questionnaire. Students were asked about the duties they accomplish when completing a design, about their adopted design methods and about their thoughts on a future profession. As a complement, Interviews were conducted with professional architects from local studios. This allowed a deeper insight into the requirements that the two sides lay down for each other. The research charts how computer aided design could affect the difficulties that appear in the architectural design process.

<p>This paper presents the results of an experiment carried out on 21 subjects, all of whom had an engineering background, with the aim of determining the influence of the designer’s attitude on the design process and on the finished design. The participants were asked to solve a range of design problems by employing different methods while their emotional response parameters were being registered by a noninvasive neuroheadset. The recorded data was used firstly to compare the different reactions of the subjects when using different design methods. A second analysis was carried out to determine whether the variations in the emotional parameters bore any direct relation to the creativity of the outcomes. The results obtained indicate a relation between emotional parameters, individuals and the design method used. However, there does not appear to be any direct association between emotional parameters and the creativity of the results.</p>

With the rapid development of economy, dramatic changes have taken place in the highway tunnel industry. However, there is no professional computer aided design software for tunnel design available. Designers tend to spend lots of time to completing the design work. In order to reduce the repeating work of designers, this paper focuses on how to implement parametric design of highway tunnel inner contour with ObjectARX on the platform of CAD. In order to generate inner contour of highway tunnel automatically, parameterized design method is employed. Visual C++ 2010 is chosen as development environment of the computer aided contour design software. With proper control parameters inputted, it generates inner contour of highway tunnel automatically. According to the results, it is a promising approach to improve the design work of high design.

In the design process of building integration photovoltaic (BIPV), the architectural design, power system design and structure design are very important. Moreover, some kinds of suitable connection are required which should meet the requirements of bearing capacity and deformation. In this paper, the connections between photovoltaic system and buildings were discussed. Then based on the 1MW HIMOER photovoltaic support in Lianyungang technical college, we selected the suitable connection, and designed the space photovoltaic support .This results are useful for the development of the BIPV.

Abstract This contribution presents the proceedings from a series of transversal university projects, addressing bodily forms of knowledge concerning the perception, inquiry, and conception of architecture. It retraces the phases of different manners of investigation over a threesemester teaching cycle, addressing perceptions and experiences of architectural spaces. The proceedings of, and results from the seminar cycle are documented and framed with an introduction to the applied methods and ways of working as well as their reflection and evaluation. These varying approaches all center around the questions of how to bring body-based and incorporated knowledge concerning architectural space to awareness and how attention to sensual and corporeal ways of perception can be increased. Thus, it investigates how the spectrum of design methods in architecture can be extended in order to actively include bodily forms of knowledge in the anticipation of spatial experience in the design process. The article introduces a concept of »Architecture Imagery« as a way to include bodily ways of knowing and body-based practices in the perception and memory of lived experience and the process of architectural design.

Architecture and geometry share a mutual history, and their relationship precedes the introduction of digital and computer technologies in architectural theory and design. Geometry has always been directly related to the modalities of thinking in architecture through the problems of conceptualisation, representation, building, technology. Through the historical overview of these two disciplines, it is possible to perceive direct influences of geometry on the architectural creative concepts, formal characteristics of architectural works, structural aspects, and building methods in architecture. However, the focus of this paper is not on the representation of historical intertwining of these two disciplines, which is indisputable, it is on the attempt to represent one specific bond between topology and architecture, firstly through the explanation of the principle of continuous deformability, and secondly through the representation of the models through which the principle occurs in the architectural design process, as well. The first part of this work will introduce and analyse the transition of concepts of continuity and deformability, from mathematical topology through philosophy to architecture, while the second part of the work will explain two models in detail, formal and systematic, through which the principle of continuous deformation is applied in certain architectural design practices. Overall, this work deals with the interpretation of the principle of continuous deformation in architecture and it shows in which way the architectural discourse changes the meaning of a mathematical-philosophical notion and turns it into a design methodology of its own. The subtlety of the question Bernard Tschumi asks about space illustrates the need to thoroughly investigate interdisciplinary relation between architecture, philosophy, and mathematics: ?Is topology a mental construction toward a theory of space?? (Tschumi, 2004, p.49)

The theory of system and design methodology as the sphere of concepts being objective mode can be applied to a more precise description, analysis and improvement of the methods of the real architectural design process. Lull's art as the primary idea of morphological analysis, has been acknowledged as to an element corresponding with the specificity of architectural design. From the architect's point of view it is worth studying the rules and peculiarities of morphological analysis methodology. In engineering design thus it may be possible to apply the methodology in architectural design.
